Florida State starting cornerback Greg Reid was arrested Tuesday night – the second time in less than a year - on charges that he was driving with a suspended license and on possession of marijuana.
Greg Reid had 32 tackles and two interceptions for FSU in 2011.
“I am aware that Greg has been charged and will gather all the information before I determine what course of action to take,” FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said.
Reid was suspended for the Charleston Southern game on Sept. 10, 2011, by Fisher for an undisclosed violation of team rules (his high school teammate, FSU linebacker Telvin Smith, was also suspended for that game). On Sept. 26, Reid was arrested on charges of resisting an officer/obstruction without violence and perjury not in an official proceeding. Those charges were dismissed days later.
It’s not clear what weight those previous incidents will be given when Fisher reviews the arrest report and talks with Reid. FSU opens the season with games against Murray State on Sept. 1 and Savannah State on Sept. 8 before the Seminoles’ ACC opener the following week at home with Wake Forest.
Reid, 21, who is from Valdosta, Ga., was stopped Tuesday night near his hometown by a Georgia State Patrol trooper, spokesperson Gordy Wright said. Reid was driving a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis and was stopped because of window tint and seat belt violations.
Wright said that the trooper took inventory of items in the Grand Marquis and “a suspected marijuana joint was located in a cup holder.”
Reid was charged with possession of marijuana (less than an ounce), driving while license is suspended or revoked and a seat belt violation. He was taken to the Lowndes County Jail and bonded out.
Reid had 32 tackles and two interceptions in 2011. But he is also a valuable punt returner, averaging 11.2 yards.
He considered entering the NFL Draft a year early, but decided to return for his senior year and be a part of an FSU defense that was ranked in the top 5 in 2011 and is expected to be one of the best defenses this fall.
