Will watching Game of Thrones ruin

  • The books? The ladyfriend wants to watch it, but I 'm only about 3/4 way through book 1.

  • How do you like the book? I've heard from multiple people that the show is much better than the books. I watch the show and absolutely love it. Although it's not fun waiting for 8 more months until the next season airs.

Love the book, but I'm by no means a book critic (I tend to like everything I read).

The general consensus is that they did an incredible job with the show, and it follows the book really closely with minor liberties to appease certain...uh...subcultures.

I'm just kinda wondering how far I need to get to be "safe", or does the Season 1 encompass the entire 1st book.?

  • Willie. Welcome to imo, just about the best epic fantasy saga in several generations.

Both the books and the HBO series are excellent. With books, you can read people's thoughts and there is room for much more back story - as well as character development. I read all 5 books before I ever saw the series, and love both. Now what I do, is go back and read the first book, and then watch the first season. Read the second book and watch the second season, etc. They follow the books rather closely in the first season and depart some in the 2nd. stray a bit if you will - which is not a bad thing at all. My biggest beefs are:

    1. Martin introduces and develops so many characters, that it's a bit hard to keep everyone sorted out the first time through.
    2. The HBO series is only 10 episodes long in each of the first two seasons so far. I want a whole lotta mo!

George R.R. Martins' saga is the best thing to come along since Tolkien's Middle Earth, and maybe, depending on the coda of the last two books, will even surpass it.

Remember..............If the Dire-wolves don't eatcha, WINTER is coming! Beware the White Walkers.

  • Books are so much more involved than the show. I would rather read the books personally.

  • All I know is, I would love to see Arya Stark kill Joffrey. I don't know if I've ever hated a character in a production more than I hate that kid.

That means the actor does a stellar job. He gets even "better" in Season 2. Nasty!

Books are way better than the show.... especially season 2 of the show. Very disappointed in season 2 and the extreme departure from the books.

Yep, agree completely. They were bringing stuff in from Book 4 in season 2. Weird.

and they are killing off characters in season 2 that are still alive at the end of book 5! totally weird.

  • The show is not even a cliff notes version of the books.

They simply don't have the time to cover the number of characters and storylines in the books.

The show is entertaining but the books are better....just don't get attached to characters because G.R.R.M. has no problem killing people off.

Yeah. For sure check out the books. Then the shows. It's about how one likes to be entertained. If it's important that they follow the books to a T, then the shows won't work too well for that person. However, if one just takes the shows for the excellent acting and screenplay dynamics imo they contain, then one could be in for a real treat. The character Tyrion Lannister alone is worth the trip.

  • Tough call. Since you are already in the book I'd say finish it first. You will know enough of the back story the characters/houses/sigils will come easy. Once you start the first season it won't take long to finish with only 20 episodes. Then you can finish the other books while you wait on season 3.

  • Season 1 and Book 1 are really similar. Season 2 and Book 2 REALLY split apart.

I fear that this will end up like Dexter and the Bourne movies. The Bourne movies were NOTHING like any of the books, and that is sad, because the original 3 books by Ludlum were pure genius. Great reads. Dexter season 1 and the first book were the same, but they completely split after that. Not sure that is a bad thing though, because the books got pretty wierd...
