Pretty good. Got pretty bad reviews, tho. I like it just as much as a Preston/Childs book.

Its a little predictable, but a little zany too.

    @mtreber

I love Preston/Child books especially the Pendergast ones. I will have to check it out.

Well then maybe I'll pick that one up next

I didn't read the book, but me and my wife do a lot of audio books(which some people count as books, some don't, I do), so this one was an audio book. Freaking amazing. And apparently Showtime will be turning it into a miniseries.

Well it looked interesting when I picked it up and thumbed through it at the store, just wasn't sure. My problem is I have a ton of books and usually read like 3 or 4 at a time, so I try not to buy anymore until I get through all of mine, but that never happens

I am a huge reader (have been most of my life) so I know how you feel. My husband bought me a NOOK for Christmas, although I protested that I would never use it, and it was the best gift I have ever received. I am on book number 13.

If any of you guys are not too religious and enjoy books based in history that use it for the basis for a good fiction book you need to give the Crucible series by Sara Douglass a read.

Well I got my BA in history and am not religious at all, most of what I read are history type books, and sometimes I like to add historical fiction, so what are these books about?

I have read all her books....The Axis trilogy followed by the the Wayfarer Redemption books are pure fantasy. The Troy Game series is seeped with Greek mythology and reincarnation. The Crucible series is based in 14th century Europe and the Catholic Church. All are really good reads imo but if you are a history buff you would probably like the Crucible trilogy the best.

Seems interesting, I think I'll check this out, thanks. I'll recommend one I read in the fall, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. It is very historically accurate for the most part except of course for the vampire stuff. My friend recommended this to me, and I was extremely skeptical because I think all the vampire crap is dumb, but this was very good IMO

They are making a movie based on this book and I wondered if it was cheesy. I will have to check it out.

I also love Steve Berry books......might be up you alley. Again a mix of history and fiction.

I'm worried that the movie will bastardize the book, although, I think the previews look alright. Either way I am going to see the movie.

While I love the entire series, book 4 is the worst of the bunch (book 3 is best imo, intense).

I just finished reading "After America" which is the second (1st is Without Warning) in a series by John Birmingham that looks at what would happen if just about everyone in the continental USA disappeared/died suddenly (spoiler, all hell breaks loose).

The historical fiction book that I would recommend to everyone, even to non historical fiction book readers is "Under Heavan" by Guy Gavriel Kay. The book takes place during early dynastic China and tells an extremely compelling story.

I also like the Saxon Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell (9th century England during the time of Alfred the Great) and Conn Iggulden's Genghis Khan series.

  • When do you all read? I know most of us have work and family, and I don't ever have the time. I'm thinking of starting up some audio books in the car, but I have a colleague who does that and most of the voices annoy me. It's all too dramatic.

  • I absolutely cannot do audio books. As far as reading, I always read right before bed.

On Hills' and a couple of others recommendation I ordered George R.R. Martin's books 1-4.

    I also ordered:
The Brain That Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science (Null)
    by Norman Doidge

Those should keep me busy for a while.

The problem I had with book 4 was that I didn't know that 4 and 5 were one book that he split into two. So im halfway through before I goggled to find out where my favorite characters were. 3 is the best

  • Book 3 has by far been the best one. I'm about 100 pages into this book and I still haven't gotten into it. Although, like I said, I put it down to watch the show. Now, The Wire has been soaking up all my other free time. I'm on episode two of season five. I put on finishing up Ice and Fire before starting on Boardwalk Empire.

I think book 5 is out too. Have you read The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan?

It's just me and my gf so if there's no game I wanna see on, I spend the time she's watching her shows reading.

Good series. Another really good series that really gets little publicity is The Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

  • Steven Pressfield's "Virtues of War" an excellent fictional firsthand account of Alexander. A super read, although pronouncing all the various Greek names and various peoples can be tough, that really opens your eyes as to how those folks viewed the world and what it was like on campaign and in battle. Certainly no sitting back 400 yards and lobbing rounds type stuff, combat in those days was beyond brutal.

Next up will be Pat Buchanan's "Suicide of a Superpower".
