    US Troops suicides up.

My Army Captain Son echoes this sentiment. He told me the low job prospects upon return from overseas duty, coupled with high bills and also high divorce rates contribute a great deal to this. Sad. These young men and women sacrifice a tremendous amount of their youth to defend this county and it's precepts of freedom. All to come home to somewhat dismal prospects, and their overall excoriation by the mainstream media.

Please thank them for their service whenever you get the chance.

  • I had the pleasure of playing golf with a Wounded Veteran from Iraq and Afghanistan yesterday and I always make sure to thank them for their service.

The most alarming thing is that the number of suicides were double that of the killed in action numbers. Scary.

Yes, scary. We do our best to support the Wounded Warriors Program, by each year for a coupla weeks, turning our island shanty over to some volunteers at our true cost, so they can work with vets that either are certified SCUBA Divers, or want to learn the activity. Our island vehicle rental guy got on board with us by offering them several handicapped outfitted vans at 50% off, insurance waived, to support the program.

One thing my son tells me that really makes a HUGE difference to soldiers serving overseas, is boxes of non-perishable goodies and cards - especially from children. Also there is a coffee card sponsored by the GREEN BEAN COFFEE COMPANY, where one can put money on it, enabling them to hit the canteen and drink it up. I believe you get a 10% bonus for your soldier, as in if you put 50 smackeroonies on it, they get an additional $5 to spend. They can use it for pastries and sundries and whatnot. I believe you have to know which store is close to which base, but there is a guideline for that.
