Other than slipknot, is there even a single decent metal band

  • BigDFSU said...

Thanks. I meant to post that a bunch in my list were that type of metal.

I am going to have to check out some of these other bands being mentioned, that is why I like threads like this one, good for finding new stuff.

If you all really want to listen to something off the wall, then Finntrollz is a good listen. I believe they refer to their music as Swedish black polka death metal. It is entertaining imo.

I like all types of metal myself, although as my list suggests, I do have a preference for power/melodic/fantasy metal. Usually prefer the clean vocals over death vocals, but just depends on the band, some of my favorites are flexible and can do both.

"Go into the water" by Dethklok makes me want to punch someone in face.

  • Alright, story time since I always find this interesting. When did you realize you loved metal music?

Amazingly enough, for me it happened while listening to the Mortal Kombat(the original film) soundtrack. That song that plays when Goro comes out and beats the crap out of everyone got me started. I realized that I kept listening to the song not because it was strange like all my friends thought, but because I actually liked it. In college when the Napster craze was going on, I was able to expand my taste in the genre and discover more bands through there. Now when I find bands I like I can go to their forums or look at reviews and usually find similar bands that other fans like.

  • My favorites right now are
    1. As I Lay Dying- Seen them live, unbelievable (also the group in my sig)
    2. August Burns Red- Unreal drummer and singer
    3. Parkway Drive- Really good Aussie group
    4. Devil Wears Prada- They do "popish" harmonies
    5. All That Remains- Good everything

    Some other good ones
    The Black Dahlia Murder
    Chimaira
    Winds of Plague
    After the Burial

I grew up on Metallica thanks to my dad but when they started to suck I had to change my taste a little so I started listening to "Metalcore" and that's my favorite genre if you will.

  • If you want to understand lyrics also check out Throwdown, their album "Deathless" is amazing from start to finish. Kind of a Godsmack type but harder.

I have often discredited Metalcore as not being worth my time(I always dug the more industrial sound, closer to older Fear Factory). I now see the error of my ways.

  • Yeah I didn't listen to any new metal until I discovered Shadows Fall. From there I found All That Remains and they were the top metalcore band at that time. Once I heard AILD I gave up on singing along to music and converted to turning my car into a mobile drum kit.

Also like old Chevelle and Seether for a change of pace. Good drums and riffs but easy enough on the ears that girls can enjoy also.

I will be checking out some of these. I have a Winds of Plague CD that I bought randomly. It is some good stuff. Only thing that sucks is for whatever reason certain CDs don't work in my car and unfortunately that is one of them.

Machine Head was a band I was into when I was younger, forgot about and recently re-discovered via a friend posting their cover of "Hollowed be Thy Name".....I found a new song for the Ipod.

I'm old enough to have lived the Megadeth/Slayer/Anthrax/(real) Metallica era, and I admit I do not know much about newer bands, but I lucked into Machine Head.

To the OP, these albums are 20+ years old but Suicidal's Lights Camera Revolution and How Will I Laugh Tomorrow are right up there with the more celebrated 80s/early 90s metal albums, and would make excellent additons to Pantera, Megadeth etc. on the iPod.

Also (edit) Sepultura's Beneath the Remains is great, too.

  • New remix of Marilyn Manson for Wrath of the Titans is nice. Don't know if it only sounds nice though cuz of the badass preview.

Side question: Is pop metal and screamo the same thing???
