Other than slipknot, is there even a single decent metal band

  • left?

Disturbed is pop-metal. Killswitch is good, but not around much. A7X (which admittedly is punk-metal) lost a lot in song and lyric creation, I think, when Rev passed (RIP, Rev).

If someone has heard something good, I'd love you to help me out and point me in the right direction. I don't keep my ear to the ground as much anymore with the hours I have to put in at work.

  • Dethklok is really good, like, my current favorite band. Classics like Fear Factory, Slayer, Pantera among other bands never fail me. I'm sure I'm missing a couple of other bands, but a lot of metal I listen do tend to be older. Also very disappointed in Korn's last seven albums, and they were the band that lead me into metal.

I'll have to check out Dethlok (also the name of a Marvel comic character, right?). I'm mostly looking for new stuff, though I love the classics.

Dethklok is a fictional band for the adult swim show Metalacolypse. But the thing is, even though the song aren't serious lyrical wise, the music is freakin amazing and Brandon Small can freakin shred on the guitar.

Guys, you really ought to look up some stuff that doesn't get played on the radio. The new Every Time I Die album is absolutely sick. Periphery is my favorite band right now. Also really into this new band a friend of mine introduced me to named The Safety Fire. Unearth, Poison The Well, Mastodon, Meshuggah, Evergreen Terrace, Born of Osiris, Opeth, Parkway Drive, and many others are great metal bands that are all very diverse across the entire genre. Really guys, I can't stress this enough...I haven't listened to music on the radio in probably five years, let alone metal music. In the nicest possible way I can say this, do yourselves a favor and search outside a box a little.

Yes, I am incredibly snobby when it comes to music. biggrin Feel free to ask for any sort of music recommendations, as I spend a lot of time looking up new music I haven't heard yet, and not just metal - I'm really into hip-hop, electronic, hell, even some oldies (been listening to some Etta James and Muddy Waters lately).

  • The last 2 posts reminded me of a few bands. Meshuggah, Evergreen Terrace(whom I saw live numerous times in high school in Valdosta), and In Flames. All very good metal bands and can't go wrong with them. And for the record, Dethklok isn't played on the radiobiggrin

  • EnterTheOcho gets it. A lot of those bands you see on tv or hear regularly on radio are nowhere near as good as some metal bands you will find with some searching. Metal seems a lot bigger in Europe, so look for info on big metal festivals then listen to the bands listed as performing in those festivals.

  • Also, I may catch some flak for this, but System Of A Down have some good songs, and Serj, though not really metal, has some good tunes as well.

Nice list of melodic death there, BigD. Never really been too big on that stuff, but In Flames is good, and I do like Opeth (loudest band I've ever seen live...ears are still ringing) and Nevermore (Jeff Loomis can SHRED).

Personally I'm into more metalcore than anything (Every Time I Die, Poison The Well, Converge, etc.), and over the past year or so I've really been on a djent kick (Periphery, Cloudkicker, Sikth, The Safety Fire, etc.).

No, I agree with you. SOAD are a great band, and Toxicity is one of my all-time favorite albums. They're one of the few bands that gets the airtime they deserve.

I'll tell you what though - if you're into SOAD, check out Fair to Midland.

Agree on Toxicity, great album(and song). I'll check them out.

I can't believe I forgot about Lamb Of God, great American metal band.

  • No mention of Bullet For My Valentine?
    I love those guys.

Also love SOAD and if you don't mind a chick for a lead singer, Otep has some great songs. She's hot too.

  • Meshuggah is the BEST metal band out there now. Without a doubt, end of story! Most innovative musicians out there!

Slipknot isnt even metal anymore. They sold their souls long ago.

Sort of agree here. I think Slipknot's first album is good, with a few songs on each following album being alright. Other than that I don't really find them that appealing.

  • Yeah, slipknots 1st two albums were pretty hateful. After that i think they got tired.

Amon Amarth is a damn good band. Some of their songs have unreal breaks that are like a roller coaster, which is what a good metal tune should be.

This is how I feel. First two albums were great, then kind of fell off after that. Still, some songs are good, but not like their first albums.

Personally, I thought The Fall of Ideals was awesome, but really can't get myself to listen all the way through the rest of their albums. shrug

Thanks. I meant to post that a bunch in my list were that type of metal.

I am going to have to check out some of these other bands being mentioned, that is why I like threads like this one, good for finding new stuff.

If you all really want to listen to something off the wall, then Finntrollz is a good listen. I believe they refer to their music as Swedish black polka death metal. It is entertaining imo.

I like all types of metal myself, although as my list suggests, I do have a preference for power/melodic/fantasy metal. Usually prefer the clean vocals over death vocals, but just depends on the band, some of my favorites are flexible and can do both.
