New Marlins Stadium

  • Anyone been to/in it? Thoughts about it?

I went to the FIU/Marlins exhibition last night. It's nice. It's new. It's not Sun Life. Just a few complains I suppose.

Instead of your typical green or black outfield wall it's lime green. They've got this monstrosity beyond the left-center fence that stands ~60' tall and looks like something from Disney World's "It's a Small World" ride. They're both eyesores imo.

The exterior has a futuristic look and overall is impressive. It's just surrounded by 4 massive parking garages. You can't see the stadium unless you're standing directly in front of it.

I think the fish tanks behind homeplate are a neat idea (although stolen from the Rays' tank that houses sting rays). I also like that the left field wall is a giant glass wall that looks into the downtown skyline and how it can open up like a sliding door during games.

I guess I just would paint the wall a normal color, get rid of the 3rd-grade sea creature "feature" and i would've put all the garages on one side of the stadium so it was visible from the other 3 directions. But eh. I'm not a Marlins' fan and I doubt I'll be in Miami long enough to have to pay much of the tax required to pay off that $1B+ stadium.

  • It looks like a fun ball park to go to(I've only been to two MLB parks:Turner Field which I love going to and have been to quite a few times and Camden Yards back in '96, when it was still fairly young. Gorgeous ball park and the only ones I could see beating it out are the old ball parks like Fenway or Wringley). I am REALLY not a fan of the big it's a small world montage thingy that's going on, but it does look like a good ball park to go visit.

  • Work right across the street from the stadium but haven't been over there yet. Hoping to get to some games this season.

  • I went to the fan fest last Saturday. There were an estimated 40,000 attendees, although not all at once. It took me 40 minutes to park, as all the garages were full. I ended up finding some street parking 4 blocks away in the ghetto. There is section 8 housing all around the stadium, so I think the garages were intended to block that. If the stadium is a sellout, parking is going to be an issue.

Inside was not too bad. The lime wall was supposed to be repainted black in center field. I don't know if it will happen or not. Also, to my understanding, the home run feature is supposed to pop out ant light up with movement. So far it's just been stationary, with no movement or lights. The seats were comfortable with plenty of leg room. The concessions were good, I thought. I heard there were long lines for the game though. I love the view of downtown too. That will look spectacular at night. The retractable roof is cool and seems to work great. The big TV in center is awesome too. I enjoyed the walkways around the park, and somehow felt safe. I never got that feeling at a Canes game. Overall, I give it a B, just as long as parking and traffic is not the headache I am imagining.

  • I can see it from my apartment but haven't been in it yet. Will definitely try to make it to several games this season.

  • I've been to the stadium too and the lime green color and the HR thing have got to go. The home-run thing should have "The World in Mine" written on it. It looks like an interior decorater from the 80's designed the place.

  • Parking is going to be a nightmare and traffic will be bad as well since the roads around the stadium (and highways) are not equipped for that much traffic at one time.

  • MLB needs to intervene on that wall color. That is abomination, and I am inclined to think it could interfere with hitters being able to see the ball (it could be a huge advantage for a home team though).

  • tell me that whoever approved of that thing in CF was high at the time of making the decision, it's the only logical explanation.

The area from the Willy Wonka tower to the tunnel is mostly painted black instead of green. I guess it was done within the last day or two. This pic is a little dated because the area to the left of Candy Mountain is painted lime green now.

And it's easy to build a stadium when the city/county politicians are bought and bribed and the burden of paying for the $2.4B stadium over the next 40 years lies on the local residents and not the owner.

  • Pres. Samson was on LeBatard's radio show this week and said they built the park for the fans. Stugotz interrupted him and said the fans bought the stadiun for you (The Marlins). Samson conceited and said they built the stadium together for each other. Ha, tell that to my grandparents who will never go to a game.
