Jury Duty

  • If it's a criminal case what NoleFan1 said, or the opposite, should do the trick. Either way, same result. If it's for civil trial duty I doubt you are ever called as 99% of civil cases are settled before trial.

Aren't you working to put yourself through school? I just recently got selected for the first time and I wrote them a letter stating that I had a job scheduled during that week and it would really mess me up financially if I had to cancel my job for duty. It didn't get me completely off the hook but it did allow me to miss that week ( They sent me another summons for a couple weeks later). I live in Georgia so it might be different in Florida.

Work or school cant get you out of Jury Duty, it might be able to get you a delay, but your employer is not allowed to treat you negatively in any way for missing time for Jury Duty.

I have Jury Duty scheduled in April too. Being I am currently a law student and I have had an internship with the Prosecutors office off and on over last 2 years. Its annoying having to go knowing no defense attorney on earth is going to keep me on the jury.

And dont worry, if you are a student, you likely wont be selected anyway. A lot of prosecutors I know dont want to keep students on the Jury (if this is a criminal case)

  • I know that employers cannot do anything to you if you have jury duty but being that he is a server (if memory serves me correctly) he does not get a weekly set paycheck. If he told them that taking a week off of work for jury duty would be a problem financially he might be able to get off or at least delay it. My husband and I are subcontractors. Again we do not get a weekly paycheck. When I explained to the woman at the courthouse that handles scheduling jury duty that I had a job scheduled for that week and that it would cost me a substantial amount of money to cancel it for jury duty she moved my dates for me. Again I live in Georgia so I have no idea if it would work in Florida.

  • Worst case, if you go just tell them that you cannot and will not follow the law and what the law says if there is something you don't agree with (such as marijuana being illegal). That will always get you out of it.

Like I said, it might get you a delay but all they will do is give you a new date. Just delaying the inevitable. And you would need a REAL good excuse to get a delay. I sat in on Jury Duty once during a trial and a Judge in the building got Jury Duty and they would not let him go even though he had a docket to deal with that week. There has to be some unordinary circumstance for work or school to get you out of Jury Duty.

  • A friend of mine just told me that you don't have to go to jury duty if the papers were sent to you in the mail. Is this true?

Will I get in trouble for not going?

Just found out that I, a college student, have to report to jury duty during spring break. IJGFM

Tons of hot women work at any courthouse - stenographers, legal aides, etc., not to mention the hundreds of women just like you held in semi-captivity waiting to be called into a jury pool. Make the most out of your opportuniy.

  • Just don't show up. They won't do anything to you, unless you have 2 no-shows in a row. Pretend you never got the notice in the mail. It worked for me in Miami.

  • Dont listen to the other people.

If you dont show up a bench warrant will be issued for your arrest for contempt of court. Now I know where I live, in Wayne County (Detroit county) the police are too busy to search for you, but you will have an active warrant for your arrest out against you, and if you ever get a ticket or pulled over, you could get arrested.

Again, there are no loopholes, you cant get out of jury duty. You can get it delayed if you really want to and come up with a good excuse. If you do skip, make sure you call the court ASAP after missing it to reschedule another date, or you will have an active warrant against you for your arrest most likely.

No. It is contempt of court to not go.

  • It's funny to me how 99% of people do their damned best to get out of jury duty...

...Then the same 99% of people bitch about the result of Casey Anthony, OJ Simpson, etc.

It's your civic duty to go. Next to serving in the armed forces, it is the most patriotic thing that you can do for your country. I get that you have it during spring break and want it moved. I would want the same. My problem isn't with the OP, it's with the average person who tries to "get out of" serving on a jury.

  • Do your civic duty. If you had a case (civil or criminal), you wouldn't want just a group of damn homeless people (the only people that don't seem to mind participating) deciding it. It sucks to have to serve on spring break (I've done it), but we need educated people as a part of the process.
