Guns! Whatcha got?

  • Nole_FrE4k said...

Sadly, none. I want some guns. I have 3 small little girls so it will be hard for me to get any at the moment, only thing that has held me back from getting some.

I'm not a parent so I won't try and act like I know what it's like but my father made it very clear that I wasn't to touch any guns when he wasn't around when I was young. He kept them all locked in his rifle cabinet (which has been replaced by 2 huge fire proof gun lockers) with the exception of his .357 which was always with him. It stayed in a case similar to old cassette cases and it lived under his bed unless he went on a road trip and he'd take it with him.

If you are seriously interested, check out some cabinets in your price range and keep the only key mixed in with your car keys. If you have the funds then spring for the fire proof lockers. They come with a key lock AND a number lock so if the house burns down then your guns will still be standing. Can double as a safe for valuables.

When my little girl was born is when I got my first gun. Protecting the house took on a whole other level of meaning. When she got old enough to use them I showed them to her and took her to the gun range. It was less about teaching her how to shoot and more teaching her that the TV and video game version of guns was nothing like the real world.

If someone were to come to my house looking for trouble...I'm calling the police after it's over. I'm not counting on the police to keep my family safe.

  • The next purchase will be a FNX 9mm. My baby is the Remmington model 700 30-06 with a wood laminated stock and iron sights.

I guess it depends on what you mean by the statement. I think most are figuring it is the natural worry of being a parent with small children and worrying about them somehow hurting themselves with a weapon you might own. If this is the case, while I'm not a parent I do live in the same house as my two year old nephew, there are plenty of storage options that will keep your kids safe. My gun comes with a lock that goes through the slide and out the mag well so nothing can be done unless it is unlocked and I keep the key on me or put it safely out of reach of my nephew. Plus I either put it in a very heavy bag out of reach(little kid won't be strong enough to open the zippered compartments even if they got to the bag and still wouldn't matter if they somehow got to the gun since it is still locked) or I stick it in a small fire proof safe that I have which would require another key. Lastly I keep the ammo away from the gun. At night I keep it in my nightstand(unloaded but I keep the magazine nearby in case I would need it) when I know I'm not leaving the room and I'm about to go to sleep. I understand the worry though and it has to be what you feel comfortable with, but there are definitely options to make sure a small child can't hurt themselves with a gun so long as you responsibly use those options and practice safe habits. I love my nephew like he was my own kid, so I make sure I do what it takes to ensure he can't hurt himself with my gun and at the same time I know I have a way to protect him if something bad were to go down. I'm obviously with the group of people that firmly believe in owning a gun to use in defense of myself and those I care about.

Of course if it is a money issue then that is a whole other thing entirely, I can imagine three small girls costing quite a lot. My nephew definitely costs me money at times biggrin Reliable guns definitely cost a few hundred. I've seen some that are real cheap, but honestly I'd rather pay the extra few hundred and get something I know will work if the time comes when I need it. Also small safes will cost a bit, but I've seen some good ones for under $200.

  • So since some of us are obviously looking I thought we could post places that we are looking to buy from so others might take advantage of deals they offer. Buds is where I bought my XDM from. They have some really good prices there, some of the best I have seen. Very reputable site as well so you can feel comfortable buying from them. I received my gun a few days after I placed the order.

Silver Eagle is a little more specialized, really only useful for any of you that live close to North Virginia. It's the range I'm a member of and they also have a retail section with quite a nice selection of guns and the prices are the best I have seen. I'm strongly considering purchasing my AR15 from them, just want to look around a bit to make sure they offer me the best deal. They also say if they don't have it to speak with them because they can probably order it and still get it at a better price than most online dealers.

  • If you go to a site like wideners you can find ammo price comparisons and sometimes get ahold of low price ammo in bulk.

  • Lucky me, the family heirloom...an 1881 Parker! Unfortunately it has a slight crack in the stock but it's still a thing of beauty!

    Army Brat

  • I looked up the Parker. Badass! My grandpa passed down an old Winchester lever action, 10ga coach gun, and a jap sniper rifle that killed his buddy. Have to wait for those tho.

    Jadaway

  • Badass indeed! But Parker wasn't called America's finest shotgun for no good reason. Check out these Parkers...worth over $5 million...WOW!!! I only wish mine was the same grade as these!

It appears the sniper was no match for your badass grandpa.

  • Ruger 10/22 plinker for now. Still haven't put a round through it. Waiting for a buddy to get back to town so we can break it in.

  • I love shooting my little Mosberg plinkster .22. At 4 cents a pop I go through the ammo by the 100's. .22 are fun.

  • Thanks for all the replies fellas. Yes, I am very concerned with my little ones getting a hold of one and some thing very bad happening.

My oldest is 8 (will be 9 in September), and I'd love to get her use to them. I might look into what some of you have provided.

Back when I was an NRA instructor I quickly noticed females, regardless of age, were much quicker studies. Somewhat due to them largely lacking pre-conceived "expertness", like us hard tails, and alot of it fearlessness.

Note though: start her off w/ a 22 pistol and/or rifle. The 22 is cheap, easy on the senses and just plain fun. Don't expose her to a .30-378 right off and expect her to like it. Also I would spend a great deal of time prior to any hot range periods SAFELY handling an unloaded weapon and getting accustomed to (most importantly) safety and secondly proper form/sight alignmnet/trigger control.

  • Possible I might purchase two this weekend depending on the deals I can find. Could end up getting an AR15 if I find a deal that jumps out. Now thinking of getting a Sig in 22LR, but it will be one of the models where I can get the kit and convert it to a 9mm as well. With the 22LR I can practice at the range for a lot cheaper, then with the conversion I can use it as my ccw.
