Expensive sunglasses

  • Is it worth it to u to pay 200 for a pair of shades? I always thought it was stupid to pay that much even tho the money wasn't an issue.

Then I got a pair of Maui Jim's. Now I can hardly wear cheapies. Just bought a pair of costa for 200 because my Maui were stolen.

  • As long as you're not one of those people who goes through a new cell phone every month due to breaking it. I've had a $80 pair of Oakley's for the past 7 or 8 years and they're still hanging in fine.

I'm the kind of person, take care of your shit buy something nice because it's going to last much longer.

  • I tend to go with the cheepo aviators found in beach shops. Someone inevitably will sit on them while hopping in my car and I don't have to strangle them to death.

  • If you pay more than 5 dollars for sunglasses, IMO you are a tool. Just sayin'.

  • Unless they give you x-ray vision, I won't pay more than $20 for a pair of sun glasses.

I was exact same way. Now I'm converted. It's not for looks...it's the lens and fit. Plus I wear shades constantly while outside. With the polarized costa lens you have X-ray vision for fishing. Not that it means much to me because I only catch a buzz and weeds when fishing

    Jadaway

  • Yeah my aviators def don't work for fishing but I too am better at drinking than catching anything. I use to put on my polarized ski goggles and hotbox my Cherokee in our driveway. We lived right off Tennessee and there is so much to see.

Same, same. I'll keep the Flight Style Cheapies for years, and lose or blow up the High end stuff within a week.

You have never owned a good pair of sunglasses then and are rather ignorant in your assumptions. Just sayin'

If you are just hanging out then any sunglasses are just fine.

If you use your glasses for sports, fishing, golf, etc there is an absolute advantage to owning a good pair. If you take care of your glasses they should last you for 10-20 years. Worth well investment. imo.

I own both cheap sunglasses and expensive ones.

  • I've had my Oakley Juliets for 6 years, I have had to replace the lenses twice because of scratches, but I love them!

  • I have owned Maui Jim's since 1997. I will not wear anything else. I have light sensitive eyes and still have to wear sunglasses on cloudy days. If you have never put on a quality lens (Maui Jim's, Revo's) you have no idea what you are missing. Not to mention the damage you can and are probably are doing to your eyes with inexpensive lenses.

The warp and vision distortion that can take place in cheap lenses really can be a detriment to your eyes. This is also an issue for me as I have a muscular problem with my eyes, to where I cannot cross one of them. Which magnifies any fault in a lens.

If you have Maui Jim's and you really want to see something extraordinary, well for sunglasses, put them on when it is raining.

  • I wear the "expensive" ones while I am driving.... It really makes a difference.... If I am using the $50 and under sun glasses I can notice a difference as my eyes are actually tired at the end of longer drives.... I leave my Maui Jims in my car and use 2-3 other cheapies for walking around outside, sailing, beach, etc....

  • I always go w/ the Wal-Marts(that being any Wal-Mart in the South) cheapo polarized specials. I have, in the past, decided I needed to get myself some Costas or Ray Bans and after that first scratch on my $150-$200 investment it occured to me $14.95 was a far more intelligent allocation of my resources.

    levynole

  • It is incredibly annoying to have a scratch on a pair of 150 sunglasses. That's why this time I went with the costa glass lens. They don't scratch like my last pair of Maui Jim's.

    Jadaway

  • I love my Maui Jims got them for 180 I'd pay 2x that for them... They're amazing

  • everybody has their vices, sunglasses, watches, shoes, cell phones. I have a pair of oakleys had them for the last 8 years don't need to but anymore. I've spent a Sh!t ton of money on watches and golf stuff recently. if you feel good about it that's all that matters.

  • ^^^This is true. I love entertainment and food so that's what I blow $$ on. Went out recently and bought the first 6 seasons of Always Sunny on a whim just so I didn't have to watch reruns or try and bootleg online.

  • I love my expensive pair which became even more expensive quite recently. I'm nearsighted and had to get glasses recently because I had to renew my drivers license and had a bad feeling about the vision test. I am good for the most part, but street name signs were hard to read until I was right at the turn. Anyways, got transition lenses on my glasses(which I got in an Oakley frame since I like the sporty design), but they told me they won't work in the car because of the windshield. I did have a pair of Oakley sunglasses already which I used all the time. They saw those and said they could put my prescription in lenses for my sunglass frame. Cost me another $300 after insurance but absolutely wonderful now. Can see clearly, they look good, and if you aren't using polarized lenses then you don't know what you are missing. Not saying everyone should drop big money on sunglasses, it really depends on what you need and how much you use them. I have plenty of friends who spring on cheap pairs and are happy to use them when driving or hanging out. At the same time there is a big difference besides price between those and a nice pair, although I admit that definitely a chunk of my money went towards a name and nothing else.

  • Every since I've returned from Iraq, I have to wear glasses as my eyes are more sensitive to the sunlight. I've found that polarized glasses are really the only ones that work for. Oakley is the only brand I like. Can't stand, wiley x, ess, or costas, I can tolerate other brands like under armor, nikes, ect, but Oakley is my brand.

  • I've had my Costas for about 6 years now (replaced twice for a $12 shipping fee, thanks lifetime warranty) and truly don't know how people go about their lives without a good pair of shades. I left them at the office one weekend and felt like a vampire or something. A friend loaned me his cheapies and I was still almost constantly squinting and uncomfortable.

Get good shades and take care of them and you'll be much better off.
