Drug Testing

  • So I just got a offered a great job and I have to go in for drug testing tomorrow. I don't use drugs so I'm not worried about that. I was wondering if they test for alcohol? My girlfriend wants to take me out to celebrate and I don't know if I should or not? Any help would be appreciated

  • Why not just wait until after the test just in case? shrug

Either way, pretty sure they won't be testing for alcohol.

  • That's what I'm thinking equa. My girlfriend is going out of town tomorrow morning so she wanted to celebrate, but I'm probably just going to go out to eat with her and call it a night. Definitely not worth the risk.

Exactly. You don't have to drink to celebrate. Hell, I'd rather save the money on drinks and spend it on great food and drink when you get back home.

  • I've taken a number for drug tests (for law enforcement positions) and drank the night before and was fine. You'll be fine, just don't get drunk and snort cocaine or do meth for the hell of it.

  • Drinking alcohol off the job and doing so responsibly (not driving, etc.) is not illegal. Therefore, I would think it is illegal to test for it as an employer unless the employee has a prior history of abuse (i.e. DUI arrests, breathalyzer to start the car, etc.). The only other exception might be like an airline pilot job or something of that nature.

I wouldn't worry. Ethanol clears your system within a matter of hours and the by-product acetaldehyde is processed shortly thereafter.

Exactly. Between LE and the military, there have been numerous drug tests I've taken where I drank the night before(one was on a Friday this past fall that fell the day after the BC game and I drank while watching). I had a few and was fine. No worries my man!cheers

  • I've never heard of an EtOH screen for pre-employment. Several reasons why it's pointless. You're good.

Congrats as well. I recently got a rep job that I had been gunning for for years. Feels good!

Employers can drug test for anything they want, as long as they disclose it in the employment agreeement. I get asked about drug testing constantly by managers. When I ask them why and give them a ballpark on price, they get disintetested.

Tons of jobs test for EtOH. Like you said, pilots, but also truck drivers, engineers (train), surgeons, law enforcement, construction, etc. Employers HAVE to have these clauses to keep their insurance rates low. Its usually on a reasonable suspicion type situation. I know that healthcare organizations take this very serious. Imagine the ramifications of a tipsy surgeon making an error.

IMO anyone who drives for work should have to submit to EtOH testing within reason. One impaired worker could bring down an entire organization.
