Pick your starting QB? No hating on anyone's choice, please.
It's nice to hear Jameis is performing well. I hear he still doesn't know enough of the playbook - it'll be interesting to see if Jimbo prefers to shorten the playbook or stick with the QB with a lower ceiling.
I'm calling Clint right now, but just by a hair. If Jameis keeps doing amazing things, I think Jimbo chooses to go with a thinner playbook.
Doing excellent thing in practice versus guys you know and are comfortable with is a whole other issue than facing another team.
That is when a more thorough knowledge of the playbook will pay dividends. You can argue that athleticism will allow JW to make plays, but athletes that try and over do wind up making more crucial mistakes.
I think CT will be the starter.
I heard a good theory on what might happen to start the season on 1010 in Jax this morning. Clint will start the season for the game @ Pitt basically so we don't have to go in to the game with a guy who hasn't taken a snap on a Monday night with a team that won't be awful. Then split reps against our win-win game and see what happens from there. If Clint does well vs. Pitt I have a feeling it will quiet a lot of the doubters even though its still not a huge game but give the new guy a shot and see what he's got vs. some snoozer opponents at home.
Three W's In My Life: Ward, Weinke, and Winston
Thanks for the insight Greek. It'll be interesting, that's for sure.
That is logical....but long term I think there has to be some upside in giving the young guy the reigns early. Do you think CT would stay at the helm all season?
I like Doak's post. I could get behind that concept.
Yeah, that actually makes a lot of sense. The only downside being that I'd like to see whoever is going to start vs Clemson get as many reps as possible early on.
I've always been a believer that if you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks - but, it's hard to doubt Jimbo when it comes to QBs.
It really is insufferable on UQ (henceforth, this is my abbreviation for Unconquered). We might turn OTR into the opposite of TCCL- better discussion but free instead of requiring a premium sub.
All for this as long as the message remains clear: stay on topic and don't make it personal.
The poster formerly known as 31-7. Understood by few, known by many, loved by all.
I meant that it might happen de facto. But yes, that is always the message. And this will remain the only football thread.
Can Trickett survive what EJ survived in the Virginia Tech game last year?
That's why I have my doubts about Trickett.
Even if he starts and is the best QB on the team... Can he withstand the physical abuse? Judging by the ways he has taken hits in the past, the answer to that question has to be no. I'm not sure he has the physical gifts/instinct required to avoid taking physical hits. And no QB is going to be "all right", once they take these hits... We've seen pro QB's (Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers) look awful once they started getting hit hard.
I think we underestimate just how much EJs' mobility kept the other team from teeing off on our line and blitzing every play.
I want Winston.
If it's even remotely close why leave Winston on the bench? Let him get the experience and build off of it.
I think Trickett could be a better game manager, but with Winston's athleticism he will be able to keep plays alive and make things happen that Trickett can't.
Here's my thing... I think a couple of hits like the one in the link below, topped off by that sack in 2011 versus Clemson that literally sent Trickett flying backwards 2 or 3 yards will end any good momentum we might have.
I like the kid's heart and competitiveness, but sorry, he simply doesn't have the frame to take the abuse that D1 defenses are going to dish out.
For every one of those, aren't there a bunch of examples where he did take a big hit and keep on going. I feel like I remember quite a few against OU where I thought the kid was going to get broken in half - only to see him hop up and run the next play.
I'd been skeptical that he could take a hit as well, to the point of cringing anytime he got hit, but I feel like he took the abuse pretty well - the vast majority of the time.
Maybe I'm giving him too much credit though.
Maybe I am not giving him enough credit. It's all good.
This wouldn't be fun to speculate if we could see the future. I think most want Winston in there because he is the easiest to speculate being great. It's like building a football player on NCAA 2014. Doubt anybody would go with the skinny white dude.
Haha, definitely true.
We basically have a Pro Day for the last 4 years during spring/fall practice and softness is an issue during the season.
This year, we have substantial injury issues across the board and Jimbo runs a Bear-Bryant-parking-lot-gladiator-style spring practice that sees players falling like flies.
What gives with this Jimbo fella? Hasn't he ever heard of a happy medium?
I like this year's practice. I think it's a reflection of the influence the new coaches have. Are players hurt? Sure. Were we paper soft vs UF, yes. I'd prefer they put some hard work in during the spring, even if it results in some minor injuries - better than getting spanked in the regular season for being soft. We have plenty of time to recover, there's almost 4 months till August practices.
Jimbo gone make us Trey Pettis tough y'all.
Word is that guy ate the last guy who called him soft.
Agreed. Play like you practice...right coach ?
I'm trying not to jump on the J5 train, but the kid looked damn good at the S.G. All in all, put the guy back there that gives us the best chance to win the most games and I'll be happy.
Go Noles !
Well there's a lot less to talk about now in regards to FSU football
Color me extremely surprised.......Wish Trickett all the best. Nole through and through. Guess the J5 train is pulling out of the station a little sooner than I expected.
I think the open question is, will Coker transfer? If J5 is the definite starter, that makes Coker a career back up. He didn't seem like the kind of guy who's okay with that, but I have no inside info.
note, I don't think J5 starting makes Maguire a career back up. If J5 starts his RS Fr year, I don't see him sticking around for 3 after that.
I think Coker will transfer in the Fall.
At least that's what the magic 8-ball said when I asked it "Will Coker stay if Winston starts?"
