Are you close with siblings/nieces and nephews?

  • Just curious. I have a younger sister, complete waste of life, so I do not understand families where siblings are close. I particularly do not get when people treat their nieces and nephews as their own children. This is partly because I'm a cold ice queen that doesn't like anyone, and I'm sure partly just because of my own family situation. I certainly hope that my two girls will like each other 30 years from now, which is why I'm asking.

I'm not close with my brother, but it's because my mother hated me and loved him - which I held against him.

My wife is very, very close with her brother and sister (and their kids).

I firmly believe that how your girls act later in life with be very much influenced by how you raise them.

  • I am close to mine. I thought of my niece as one of my own and my sister and her husband would do anything for my children. My brother and I don't hang out or anything but I still think we are pretty close. I'm super excited that his wife and I are both due within 10 days of each other so that our children can be close too. My husband is close to his siblings too but I don't think he is as close to his nieces and nephews as I am. He loves them but I don't think he ever actually misses them.

  • Not close at all with cousins, etc. Not very close with my step-brother either.

  • Only child who lives 1K miles away from cousins. Fiancée is very close with her brother, who was my best friend before my fiancée and I started dating, and they are very close with one side of their family.

  • No siblings, but I am pretty close with my cousins (well, most of them---I have 18). I am also close with my aunts and uncles (9 sets).

  • Only living sibling out of the seven of of us other than me, my bro and I are no longer close. I pretty much put his daughter, my niece through UGA. As lads I did my best to coach, guard, teach and look after my bros, but Mom constantly held me up to them as a bastion of correct behavior. Straight A student, captain of most of the teams of most of the sports I played. I know this was mostly due to the luck of the draw, and tried to bring them up as high as they could. They resented me for it rather than strive with it. My older sis and I were very close. Her tips on how to act around women have mostly stood me in good stead throughout my life. Even Ice Queens.

Pfft!!! Between 2 of my mom's 9 other siblings, I have 12 cousins. The other aunts and uncles all have at least 2 children, so that puts me at around thirty cousins. Not including those who are married. All this from my mom's side, this isn't including my dad's side. And I have 2 sisters whom I love to death, but being the youngest, they gave me too much hope.biggrin

  • Before my mom died me and my sister fought like cats and dogs barely spoke but after that we talk 3-4 times a day and especially after Emma was born

  • Have an older brother that is 6 years older than me and a younger brother that is 5 years younger than me. They are my best friends and if I ever take the plunge, I know that I am going to have both of them be best men. We fought all the time growing up, but that was a brotherly thing, I guess. My older brother has two kids and I would do anything for them.

  • I have 2 older brothers. We're pretty tight. 4 nephews and a niece that I see a couple times a month. We all live relatively close... Within an hour. My daughter's and their kids are really close as well. We really have a tight family now that I think about it.

  • Interdasting post Laura. I'm 100% with you. Wasn't raised being a member of the Brady bunch and don't have joint accounts with the significant other. 2 siblings and they only call when they want something.

  • Was close to my half-sister before she passed away my senior year at FSU. Close to one of my nephews (her youngest child, but more like a younger brother to me since we're only 7 years apart in age), but not really close to my other nephew or niece, or their kids.

She and I were pretty far apart in age, so I grew up as the only kid in the house, basically an only child in most ways.

  • I have 1 sister and we have gotten closer as we have gotten older. My girlfriends niece and my nephew are just a few months apart. I consider my girlfriends niece my niece too and I would do anything for her. I would do anything for my nephew too. As for my cousins, I keep in contact with all of them and we are all there for all the big events.

  • I'm close with my little nephew. I play sports & video games with him. He just turned 12. My cousins not so much. When I see them which is rarely we are kool. My sister and I are on and off. We have lived in different states for 20 years. When she was younger we were much closer even though we lived in different states. Now that she has a family and is doing her own thing not so much.

  • So, second phase of the thread. Any reason in particular that you think you are/are not close?

I'm starting to wish I could get in touch with my half sister. But she doesn't know about me and I don't want to cause a problem for her family.

    FSULaura

  • That's a shame. How can you be certain you will cause a problem? You may be missing out on making a new friend. Extend the hand. And smile.

This thread got me to thinking about why my younger brother and I drifted so far apart. I applied a precept from my client relations page - where you ask them what they really find to be the problem. More often than not, it's diametrically opposed to what I think it is. I found out I was wrong, and our separation was due to a comment I made some years back about his distended belly, (he looked liked an ugly woman pregnant with twins), really hurt his feelings.

All is good now, I helped him buy a new truck, as his finances are in their usual mess, and his chevy had crapped out on him.

  • Short version: I was adopted at birth. Half-sister is with biological mother's husband. Neither of them know I exist. When mom dies, I'll probably reach out to her. She's an only child. And very pretty. But an Auburn fan. Glad I escaped that destiny.

So are you and you have a wonderful family. AND you're a Seminole Fan - which is the very best.

I'm an only child with all half-brothers and a half-sister who I adored and protected. Blood is important, and the connection can be rewarding. However, whatever, good luck. Going back to work now.
