Winston returns to baseball diamond

  • fsugeo said...

Here is where people are going to look back and want to say "I told you so."

If Jameis is a starter in the OFer or the closer he will miss the occasional spring practice. The baseball team starts ACC play on March 8 and between March 15 and April 13 they play 3 ACC away series.

If he is not a starter or contributor then he can probably get away with missing away series and some midweek games.

BTW, he has to be on a football scholarship, there is no choice in the matter.

No other choice, says who. You mean to tell me that you can't give a kid a baseball scholly and they walk on to the football team, something Kyle Long considered doing. It just happen to be that Winston accepted the football scholarship and walked on for baseball

And why does there have to be a " I told you so " .it seems you have already decided that Winston WILL not participate in Spring football. Hell who knows if he will be a contributor for baseball right now.

If he is a starting CFer or the closer he will not miss games to attend football practice. I said it again.

If he isn't the closer and doesn't start in the OF he will miss some baseball games for practice.

FSU plays three ACC away series during spring practice where they usually fly out around 1pm on Thursdays. Martin isn't leaving his starting CFer or closer at home for ACC baseball series so he can attend football practice.

Lots of if there buddy..... again a plan is in place, and if it is in place I am sure the coaches went over ever aspect of possibilities.

If you are at FSU on a scholarship for any sport other than football and you walk on the football team your scholarship becomes a football scholarship.

In the case of Kyle Long because he signed a baseball scholarship in the early periold he could not have played football at FSU even as a walk on for two years.

That stops schools from signing kids to a scholarship in a smaller sport in the early period and them moving them to football.

If you play football you are on a football scholarship, that is it. It is your only choice.

I guess you missed it as well... you can be on scholly for one sport and walk on to another. Hence the choice was Winstons. He could have taken a baseball scholly ( depending if available)and walked on to football. I never said a player can be on scholly for 2 sports. Go back and read my post again

No it doesn't.... not all walk ons get scholarships. Those are offered not given just cause you play.

But a player CAN'T do that..

The NCAA put a stop to that many moons ago

You cannot be on scholarship for a sport and walk on to the football team. You scholarship at that point will be moved to a football scholarship.

You may want to look into this as I am not making it up.

Winston can only be on a football scholarship.

There are two "ifs" one addresses him as the starter and one addresses him as a non starter. Not really "lots" just enough to cover the only two outcomes.

    fsugeo

  • I can't find it, binged and googled it. If either of you have a link provide it.

Now back to the actually topic. Winston very well could miss baseball regardless of being a contributor or not. Again key word is could. As I have stated we do not know what the plan actually is.

You seem to be positive about this.... Do you know Martin or Jimbo personally??

If all my posts lay out the same scenario thats not more ifs.

As for looking up the information for you, I am not going to do it. Its a rule used to prevent schools from signing kids to scholarships in lesser sports and putting them on the football team.

If you play two sports in college your scholarship will be in the sport with the most scholarships. Since football is always going to have more than any other sport if you play football and anything else you are on a football scholarship. If you run cross country and play basketball you are on a basketball scholarship.

  • Fsugeo - you might be right Martin wouldn't leave his starting Cf home and Winston will miss football practices.

However I that happens then I most likely will be right and he stands no chance of starting at QB.

Only way he starts at QB is if he makes it his priority PERIOD. If they have a plan and he misses no practice great though he will still be physically and mentality stretched.

I am 99.9999% sure this is accurate he counts against football.

  • Miami used to bring guys in on track scholarships and have them play football. That rule was changed, so now IF you play football, it goes as a football scholarship.

Anything could happen, except Winston not playing baseball at FSU as long as he wants to.....lol.

I'm not trying to argue with you, he said countless times that he was coming to FSU to play both and had numerous conversations with JF and MM. They always had a plan and that plan was to play both.

    You need to relax, dude.

Isn't there a board for the baseball team?

Why you in here cryin', bro?

Don't know either of them personally, but know Martin's stance has always been if you are a member of the baseball team he expects you to be at games.

If stated my thoughts on this and will add this caveat....if Winston is closing and works all three weekend games or two of three weekend games and is unavailable for a Tuesday game due to not wanting him to throw again he could miss a game. If he is part of a platoon in the OF and starts only against RHP (he is a switch hitter, so a platoon would be odd) and on a Tuesday the other team is throwing a LHP I could see him missing that game.

I will also say that it seems the relationship between football and baseball now is in a better place than it was before Fisher and that is not to say the previous relationship was bad...

    fsugeo

  • I think a lot of folks don't realize how much of an asset he can be on the baseball diamond. Kid has MLB talent, can pitch, can play damn near any position on the field and is also a switch hitter. When travel starts some kids who can't offer these assets will get left off travel rosters and he will be making the trips. I know Meat and Jimbo have these things in mind. Jimbo is a bigger baseball fan and goes to more games than most folks on this board he knows what both teams need.

    lsteed08

  • This kid has the talent to be a stud on both fields. He came here for both sports. We knew that going in. It is the main reason we got him. I don't think anyone or coach is going to pull the rug out out from under him and make him choose. I'm not going to speculate to much about how the coaches will use, or share his time, cause i dont know what they have worked out. I do hope that he can help bring home a NC for both squads. That would be one great story.

No you have said he WILL not miss any baseball. As Nee said there is a plan in place, as I stared for all we know there might be a plan in place.

    Hey FSUgoNoles24--

I WAS WRONG. It appears Winston will probably miss the VT series. Not likely to miss anything else from what I'm told.

Now, he may not be starting, but regardless he will miss VT and I thought that wasn't going to happen.

I hate when people cannot admit they were wrong, so I wanted to man up here.

Only reason I said he could miss a game or two is for the fact he seems like he wants to be FSU QB... His passion for both sports is incredible... And he seems to have the mindset of doing both at the highest level.. He seems to have the same mindset as Bo Jackson on playing both...
