Why are media members actively

  • if not aggressively pushing FSU from moving from the ACC?

We didn't see this with Pitt, Syracuse, Miami, Va Tech, etc moving to the ACC.

We didn't see this with A&M and Mizzou to the SEC.

Why are so many mainstream media and even bloggers almost emotional about this? To the point of ignoring fundamental issues like FSU not being able to balance a budget?

I get FSU fans and supports fighting for and against.....but those who have no interest in FSU....even those who have for years had no love for FSU. Why are so many actively lobbying/debating/etc that FSU should stay in the ACC?

Ummm...... because media members are generally complete and total idiots?

  • I think we did see this a bit with A&M in the form of media lamenting the loss of a major historic rivalry. It just sticks out more in our case for a few reasons. First FSU is a bigger brand than A&M so the reactions people are having are bigger. Second this is the first time a true tent pole of a conference has been ready to move. FSU leaving the ACC is like USC leaving the P12, or Bama, UF and LSU all leaving the SEC. So stories are written saying this would cripple the ACC, which result in fans of other teams going overboard to throw dirt on the name of FSU. I think the final reason is that a lot of reporters are a bit tired of the realignment stories and thought things were over. Now not even a year later we are looking at the possible death of the ACC and possible expansions in the B12 and SEC as well as more realignment to try and keep the ACC alive.

  • They have a platform but who cares what they have to write or say? Do they have FSU's best interest at heart? Nope.

  • I suspect some interested parties are using a PR firm to gin up opposition, or at least seeking out those that are inclined to oppose FSU's move out of the ACC and requesting that they write a column saying so (whisper campaign) Two conferences come to mind.

This happens more often than you think. PR / media relations firms exist. Good ones have a network of powerful relationships with "opinion makers"
Several conferences have a great deal to lose.....conspiracy or real possibility....huummm

  • One person said it perfectly: the brand of Florida St football. As much as teams like Vtech want to think they have surpassed us, the fact that we still get this much media attention despite not being as dominant as we once were is the REAL gauge of our impact.

Assuming we leave and Miami stays, if they reload and become competitive again(which I think will happen), it will be no question as to who is the new face of the ACC.

I cannot read the VIP posts on this board, so this may have been touched on, but with ESPN having rights to the ACC, and also having some rights to the BIG12, it may be in its best interest to keep the ACC intact to protect those interests.

With FSU and Clemson gone, unless there is some sort of reduction in pay clause in the event teams defect the conference, ESPN could be overpaying for those rights....With FSU and Clemson added to the Big12, the Big12 has an escalator type clause (from what I have read), that will increase the revenue it receives from its TV providers (I think this is in the ESPN contract)...Thus with the move, ESPN would be overpaying for the ACC and then have to pony up more money to pay the Big12...that's lose - lose for ESPN which is why they may have a reason to speak out against it.

Same thing happened when a&m and missouri left for the SEC...ESPN had an interest in both television contracts there as well.

  • ESPN made the contract with the ACC probably knowing there is a chance FSU an another program would be gone In a month.

Remember when the ACC added Syracuse and Pitt wasnt there word that those were the schools ESPN recommended to the ACC? Also te big12 list of schools for expansion is a list that was put together with ESPN saying which schools add the most value.

I would expect te reason the new ACC deal is so bad is because ESPN new FSU and someone else is leaving this summer.

  • One of the WVU guys who has been on this the longest says FSU and the B12 have been talking for about 6 months now, and theorizes that part of the reason ESPN lowballed the ACC is because they are expecting FSU to be gone soon. Looked at like that the horrible contract makes a bit more sense. If FSU bails and takes Clemson, GT or Miami with, the ACC is going to grab another hoops school from the Big East and would be worth a contract in line with what is currently there.

  • The buyout isn't the issue. It's like citing moving costs when your new company pays way more and is offering to cover half. We'll get it back easy. You make the move.
