Why all the Gt love?

  • I like Gt. I am good friends with a coach there. However, what does GT add? not viewers. They are dominated in the atlanta market by UGA. It has a national alum base due to the nature of the school.

The conference gains more from VT, BYU, or UM than GT. I do think they are better than Louisville for any conference.

Haven't the Bears gotten the memo that UCF is the way to go?

    Proximity to FSU?

Their biggest value (from FSU's perspective) is they are the closest ACC school to us. They will help cut down on travel costs. Not to mention, FSU has a very big fan/alumni base in Atlanta.

For the Big 12? GT is still in a major market (ATL) and a very talent rich state. While GT may not have the fan base UGA does, it's still a connection to a big market and a great recruiting state.

Not really. I mean, FSU already brings to the table everything Miami does from a Big 12 perspective. The Big 12 has exposure in all of FL now. It's not like adding FSU includes all of FL except for South FL.

GT is still closer to FSU then Miami is in regards to travel costs.

  • GTech is a good football school with good academics in a great area. It also only has to compete with Georgia. Just like with FSU and UF, if the BigXII can help it close the money gap with UGA who knows what could happen. Also it's not named after a city.

GTech is an average football program who runs a terribly boring offense.

GTech can't compete with Georgia on any level like FSU does with UF.
Tech is a small school filled with nerds who couldn't care less about football and elite recruits in GA don't dream of playing for the yellow jackets.

Not much of the Atlanta market is tuning in to watch GTtech on Saturdays

I will second this. I will third it with a mention of Goodfelllas pizza, which is on the opposite street corner.

  • I think with all of the increased travel by going to the Midwest, it makes sense to find FSU and Clemson a central companion. Add in that they are

    1) in Atlanta
    2) in a good recruiting state
    3) a great academic institution
    4) decent at football, basketball, and baseball
    5) approved by ND

    and it all makes sense.

I'd agree they're an average football program, but their offense being boring is debateable. GT is 7th in the nation in yards per play and Top 5 for plays of 20+ yards and #2 for plays over 60 yards. They can break one at any time.

I agree they can't compete with UGA like we can with UF.

Tech is Bigger than Clemson and while it does have many "nerds" it does have a pretty rabid base of student fans that are very involved on game day.

As far as GT fans tuning in to watch games, maybe it's the people I grew up around, but they were diehards just like us. Plus, it's about the Big 12 having a market to broadcast games. Currently, the AcC, not the Big 12 is broadcast there on the ABC regional game. That would change if GT went to the Big 12. There will be times, if GT does not go to the Big 12 where FSU being a Big 12 team will not be the ABC regional game in Atlanta, the ACC game will be.

You keep bringing up the national audience Miami supposedly brings but you're not acknowledging the imminent demise of the program.

Will they be interesting when they're getting their heads kicked in on the reg due to sanctions and a total lack of commitment to athletics? I'm doubting it.

I don't think Miami adds anything other than bragging rights for us after having to pick them up and dust them off. Just my opinion.

Oh st was supposed to get its head kicked in from sanctions. We saw how that turned out

IMHO UM's "imminent demise" is nothing more than wishful thinking on this board. Even if true, there will also be a time after the sanctions end.

    anyone remember 2000-2005.

In the depth of their sanctions, Um all still have more viewers than GT.

You mean 2000-05....when they were actually cheating again?

I don't think its wishful thinking bro. And it's not just sanctions, how long can they play in that stadium in front of no one?

Like everyone says, they will always get SOME players by default. But you need more than a handul to seriously compete. They're teetering big time.

  • the B12 wants GT more than FSU b/c of the Atlanta TV market. Atlanta is a great city in a FB rich state (probably #4 nationally).

You mean a time after sanctions where Al Golden has moved on, so he's been replaced by another Atlantic 10 coach who competing with Western Michigan and Dartmouth for recruits? All while fighting a president who has no interest in supporting football at the cost of academics?

Are you sure you haven't confused the meaning of the words "wishful thinking" with "common sense"?

let's see the um demise before we all declare it has taken place. How far does um have to fall before gt has more viewers than um?

a long, long way. At the end f the day a conference will make more money adding um over gt because more people watch their games. In What year will Gt start having more veers than UM?

I am not saying there are betting additions than uM. I am saying Gt is not one of them. adding gt is like adding pitt or the cuse. sure they are shown in big markets but no one watches then in those markets.

I have not seen one report that says GT is now favored over FSU. Where are you getting this stuff? FSU was the number one draw in the ACC. GT is in the middle of the pack.

My statement was ambiguous. I didn't mean that FSU is more valuable than GT. I meant that the B12 is interested in GT b/c of the Atlanta TV market.

You are crazy if you think the B12 TV contract is not bigger with BYU than gt. Byu has a huge following out west. more money for the conference means more money for FSU.

Other than geogprahic proximity to us, Gt adds nothing. We will get recruits form ga regadless of Gt's conference affiliation.

I admit it would be good for FSU to have Gt in the conference for all matters except making money.

I like Gt. I think Gt is better than Louisville and fairly equal to NC St. I do not think they are as good as pick up as um and no where close to BYU.

I doubt clemson is as good a pickup for the b12 as BYU. Byu has a bigger viewing audience. I also suspect BYU willl be #15 or #16 if it comes to the big 12

Because the adm in Berkley will block BYU to the pac 12 so they should still be availibile in a few years.

    TNOLE27

  • In all of this talk, I am surprised the Big12 hasn't been interested in NCST or vice versa.

    PTCnole

  • GT would be a strategic move not a tactical one for the B12.
