Which team will break the SEC Dominance....

  • Reality there are only a handful of teams that can actually do it....Who will finally break through....

    Big 12-Texas / Oklahoma---Dark horse-Oklahoma State
    ACC-FSU / Clemson / Miami
    Pac 12-Oregon / UCS---Dark horse---UCLA/Washington
    Big Ten-Ohio State / Michigan

I am not saying these WILL do it...Just saying there are not many teams that have the chance of actually doing it. Texas at some point can and will have enough talent to match up against the SEC...It may be after a coaching change but it will happen....Up in the Big 10...I know, I know, I know...the big ten is terrible.....But Urban Meyer is a very good coach and he can flat out recruit...And if their skill guys are from the South (Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia) and you add the big guys they get from PA, Ohio, NJ...And they get the right mix...Ohio State could eventually break though.

Clemson showed last year against LSU that in one game they could play with an SEC team physically and skill wise....FSU is close talent wise to those in the SEC....And Miami while not close now...they could get there in the next 2-3 years with some quality recruiting. Out west you have a school like USC...they just don't have the depth right now to compete...UCLA is a major dark horse..Some will say I am crazy...which is fine but I like the job Mora has done. They were unbeaten in 1998 and lost to Miami in the final game...That team in 98 was loaded and very good. Oregon has the talent....University of Washington eventually could be a dark horse program....Even Stanford could get there.....

In the end there are probably only ten programs in the country that COULD eventually break the stranglehold in college football....Remember that in a one game playoff which is what you have now.....and eventually two games....you dont have to beat the SEC over an entire season...It is during one week now...back to back weeks in the future...WHO HAS THE BEST SHOT AT GETTING IT DONE.

  • FSU, Ohio State, and Texas once they get a new coach

  • Yes Urbie can recruit but a good coach meh. We saw how good the mighty gates were after he lost Strong and Mullen

  • Miami is not 2-3 years away from competing with the SEC in a national championship setting. The rest I agree with.

UCLA may be a team to watch. Notre Same has recruited very well. Kelly will have them among the elite again.

  • Is Clemson or Miami anywhere near having a defense? They have, or will shortly have, home run hitters on offense.

I think FSU needs a home run hitter on offense, that could get us there.

To his credit, they did go undefeated in his first year. I don't care who you play, that's not easy to do.

  • There is a difference between Bama and the SEC . I do think the playoff will limit the preperation advantage Saban has with the bowl system.

If it is not FSU, Oregon or tOSU over the next two years it will be Texas in 2015. They will process Mack after this year I believe. They will hire a top 3-5 national coach in his prime and they will go completely HAM pretty quickly. That program is the death star when its up and rolling.

I will be very interested to see who they hire. Texas fans have mentioned Nick Saban. Alabama can't afford to get into a bidding war with Texas either. Texas generates about $50 million more per year and their endowment is $7.2 billion.

Right now TAMU is schooling Texas on the recruiting trail. I do not expect that to continue much longer.

  • I don't think they hire Gary Patterson either. Honestly I think they shock and hire an in-good-standing NFL head coach at like 6.5 mill. That's nothing to them. One booster may pay it.

If I was them I would track Brian Schottenheimer if you wait two more years and Mike McCoy if they fire Brown after 2013. I could see them hiring Mike McCoy as head coach and then spending 1.75 on an NFL defensive coordinator.

Texas before 05 won a MNC in the 70's... None in the 80's,90's.. They are the state school of Texas.. Oklahoma is the real juggernaut of the southwest.. The only thing Texas has a chance at is underachieving on the field as usual..

You're right. Historically, OU is the better program. Texas, however, has inherent advantages over OU and every team in college football. If they find the right recipe, they will be off and rolling. Facilities are top notch, the city is top notch, the funding is second to none, they potential monopoly on arguably the best recruiting state in the nation etc.

  • Agree with Kum. They are a terrible program per dollar invested historically. But they can turn it around at any moment. They are like Miami but with 100 times more money, interest, established facilities.

    fsufsu

  • But who was Stanford?

  • Texas ever gets the right coach they can do what alabama has done.

  • In 2 years Meyer is gonna have OSU so far ahead of the rest of the Slow 10 they'll be yearly contenders for the MNC... As for Texas if the get Saban every team in America will be playing for 2nd place yearly

I have lived in DFW for 15 years and am not overly impressed.. True they toss alot of money around but the high school ball here has gotten soft.. They started testing here a few years ago and I have long suspected its because of the money being thrown around in the burbs have created alot of synthetic talent. I would put my money on A&M winning a title before Texas does again

    ftworthnole4291

  • I don't think one team or program will end the SEC's run.. It will be ended by a couple teams going undefeated and a one loss SEC school getting left out.. Oregon was so close this year

As for programs who can compete with the top SEC programs on a year basis

    Texas(they have so much potential)
    FSU
    USC
    tOSU
    Maybe ND

    Thats about it

  • At some point there will be a team that plays one for the National Title that also beats them. Texas can become a power house if they ever get it right. MONEY RULES....And they have the most in college football. They also are in a very fertile area for football talent. I could see a big time coach going in there and actually recruiting areas like Georgia, Louisiana as well as some other areas. I think the one thing Texas does not do and they can is cherry pick ELITE kids from out of state. There is no reason for a school like Texas to not recruit players like Goldman (DC), Darby...The RB from LA this year.....They can leave Texas for 2-3 kids every year if they are ELITE kids.

I think USC,UCLA,FSU,UF,Miami all have better shots than Texas.. That place makes money in spite of itself.. Two titles in 40 years says it all

    ftworthnole4291

  • What did Alabama win before Saban got there....They had a title in 92....and did nothing during the 80's. They went through coaches like crazy. LSU never won a thing to Saban and now Miles go there. College football has changed....And money RULES the day. Texas should dominate in college. They should never go 7-5 or 8-4. The resources that school has are on a different level. They get someone in there that instill discipline...gets the team looking like Bama does....and that program can be on cruise control within 3 years. Their weight program is nowhere near what the SEC schools have.

Alabama would have had thier hands full this year with a real team in the MNC.

ND was not even clsoe to being #1 IMO. Anyone of FSU, Oregon, Stanford, UGA, etc would have been a much better game and could have beaten Bama - not saying they would have but it would have been a MUCH better game.

  • $$$ is a necessary condition for beating the SEC, but it isnt sufficient. A little research will show which programs get excluded b/c of this fact. CFB is an arms race underpinned by $$$: if team X wants team Y's coaches & X has more $$$ than Y, then Y has no chance to compete with X.

It's not quite that black and white, but it is true to an extent. While FSU may not have the money of some of the upper level SEC teams, they do have more money than 80% of athletic departments. At some point, you have enough money. There is only so many renovations you can make, facilities to build and coaches you can buy. Schools like FSU, USC, and Clemson have the funding (albeit not quite to the extent of the SEC elites) to keep up with this "arms race" (which is mostly message board fodder, btw) and have been doing so. Schools like Louisville, Nebraska and Oregon also have the funding to keep up with this "arms race", but they have inherent disadvantages that make it more challenging for them (recruiting base).
