What makes a great recruiter at FSU (re-post)

  • I posted this a few days after Craig and Gran left. I think it still holds true and with some worried about the new staff, I think you should read this again.

    ------------------------------------------

What makes someone a good recruiter? A lot of people over look the letters on a coaches shirt and how important that is when walking into a high school.

This isn't a knock on anyone at FSU. I think there are some outstanding recruiters on this staff. But let's be honest, these same coaches couldn't land the kids they do with the letters F-S-U in reverse.

Having the right letters on your shirt + a good personality + the ability to evaluate = great recruiter

I know several coaches at lower levels that many of you have never heard of that will be GREAT recruiters once they get the right letters on their shirt.

As long as the Florida State brand is strong, FSU will always have a good recruiting staff.

  • The fact that you have to post this as well as I think Tim posting the "perspective" post during the season shows is an indictment on this fanbase. Man up people.

  • Reading an earlier thread I also now see I missed my calling.. Being young and black also makes you a great recruiter.. Screw it I'm leaving the family and taking my talents to South Beach(kidding)!!

  • How does this theory work for Trickett and our OL?

Imagine what talented recruiter could do recruiting for FSU instead of relying on the name on the jersey.

  • The logo gets you to the front of the line. Once there you better have some game or it won't matter. Some guys have it, others don't.

No doubt. Gran built his reputation as one of the best recruiters in south Fl way before he ever put a FSU shirt on.

  • Haha I have a downvote stalker.

  • I evened it our for ya Njnoles.

I hear all the time that "FSU sells itself". Well. Maybe a bit. Perhaps.

I call mostly bullshit on that. It may be true it gets you attention, but in this day of information at one's finger tips, and the negatives that have engendered out of our program, coupled with behind the scenes issues known in some areas but not in others, our staff has work to do. They do it and do it well, but the brand, while strong, is no way anywhere near what it once was. Remember, Perception is reality to many of these kids and their families. All it takes is one HS coach who does not like FSU to scuttle a lot of effort and good will.

Now. the new additions appear to have the chops; at least a couple of them do so far. We'll see how well they perform as a whole after a full cycle. I'm betting they may be even better than the previous bunch - who were not exactly chopped liver. How we perform on the field, to echo several posters above, will be most illuminating in several dimensions.

  • Josh-some feel that if FSU does not hire a coach with existing ties to S Fla it will bite them in recruiting that region as relationships take time to build. You thoughts on this line of thought?

  • Like Fish said the FSU polo gets you in the door, but the rest is on that individual recruiter... Just ask Greg Hudson

It's not like FSU banks on half their class coming from the south Florida area.

In Dade/Broward FSU signed 4 prospects in 2011, 0 in 2012 with a full staff. This year with a fractured staff they signed 4.

FSU has some good recruiters that want to recruit the Dade/Broward territory. I think it's safe to say they'll land 2-4 prospects from the area this year, which is right on par with years past.

I think concern over recruiting the area are a bit exaggerated considering the % of kids that come from the area every year that make up FSU's recruiting class.

Yep, and that's why Hudson is gone.

FSU polo + good personality + eye for talent = great recruiter
