What is the difference between 2012 ND & FSU?

  • kelly would have had the guts to kick the field goal against NC St, and he would have had the guts to bench EJ after he played terrible on the road and against any team that had any semblance of talent.

Kelly would have started Jameis Winston because even though hes raw, hes the best QB on the roster. Kelly would have taken it upon himself to get Jameis ready each week instead of sticking with the senior who clearly doesnt have the "it" factor

  • Senior laden offensive line that dominates the LOS every game. 5 kids with 4+ years in the system with 4+ years of S&C.

    Was this a serious question?

EJ aside, we had games where the OL dominated, we had games where they looked like a group of guys that made lots of mistakes.

Question, did anyone watch the bowl game against ND and understand what they saw? They saw a team shutdown in the first half due to OL, and a team that came together in the 2nd half due to playing great along the OL.

You can't win games like that. See UF, see second half NC State.

The Kelly > Fisher....Please. Jimbo would have loved to have 5 OL with 100+ collective starts, who were all 4 and 5 stars.

Can't wait for the reality of the matter in 2 years, when we have the same situation on OL. We will win lots of games as long as the D holds up

    Agree with all of this.

  • Notre Dame was more fortunate. Got some breaks in games. Don't think they lost the kind of key players that FSU did. An argument to be made that they played a little more consistently in the trenches. They took care of the ball in a way FSU did not, which is probably the largest part of the discussion because FSU is a more talented team overall than Notre Dame. Their QB play was not better than FSU's. Golson is not a very good passer (neither, really, is Rees) and their QB situation was unsettled at times. An argument could be made, however, that Notre Dame more effectively limited their QBs, but they basically went 12-0 by letting their defense dominate and then being solid on offense without shooting the team in the foot. Let's be honest - the only game that Notre Dame nearly threw away like FSU did vs. Florida was the Pitt game (-3 in turnovers). If Pitt makes what should have been an easy field goal (or if the refs don't bail out the Irish), and/or if the refs let the Stanford RB use second effort, then we're not having this discussion.

  • They have a better defense that thrives on taking the ball away. They also have a will to win and won't allow themselves to be defeated. They will beat Bama this year IMO and remind me of the OSU team that beat the unbeatable canes in '02.

The referees beat the unbeatable Canes in '02, not the Buckeyes.

  • LUCK!

Brian Kelly had Nothing to do with all those lucky breaks and bad calls that helped his team win games they really lost on the field.

  • It's actually quite simple. Notre Dame knows what their strengths and weaknesses are and they play to those very very well. There is nothing that we do consistently well, other than kick field goals.

We played exactly 0 complete games this year, against terrible competition. Not a good sign.

I was thinking about this the other day and I thought it was a good question. We bowled together last year and beat them, yet this year ND is going to the title game. They played a much harder schedule than us in 2012 and you can't tell me they just have more talent than we do. So what happened?

    coaching.

    coaching.

Oh and I forgot to add ND had either 27 or 29 seniors on their team this year.
Can't coach that type of experience and leadership.

No, but refer to NCST. The disparity in head coaching and offensive coaching is staggering.

Wow. Pick every perceived mistake you think the team made and say Kelly would have done it differently.

I don't see any way in hell Kelly would have started anyone on our team over E.J. Who knows about the field goal.

And why are you assuming Winston is better than any other QB we have?

This thread is kinda interesting but the wins & losses speak for them selves. FSU didn't make the breaks & failed a bit too often to make a good play in key situations. As the old saying goes. If ifs & buts were fruits & nuts everyday would be Christmas.

I don't think wins and losses completely speak for themselves. We are the underdog against NIU if they do.

  • It was a lot of things, but anybody who doesn't think a part of it was them getting some lucky calls and a little extra help from the officials is naive. Just off the top of my head I can think of two instances that changed games in their favor. The phantom PI call in the Pitt game and the Teo pick that obviously hit the ground in another. I would have to agree that coaching was also a big factor along with quarterback play.

Overall, our QB play was better. We threw for far more yards per game. Our efficiency was markedly better. Our TD/INT ratio was better. Their QB ran for 20 more yards than ours.

I'd love for someone to explain to me how their coaching was better.

The main difference I see is that we lost 16 fumbles, and they only lost 7. They intercepted 6 more passes than us. They were better in the turnover battle. And they got two incredibly fortunate calls.

  • Look, EJ really struggled at the end of the year. I certainly wouldn't argue that. But the ND QB's struggled at times as well.

You really want to know how a coach who has his team in the NC game, with less talent, starting a first year QB, and playing a more difficult schedule is a better coach?

The homerism on this board is astounding. If you listened to this board, every coach who has won a NC only did it because they were lucky. Apparently Jimbo is some brilliant coach who is secretly being held down by the law of averages.

Absolutely I want to know. I'd love for someone to explain it. Did he teach a magical way of securing the football that our staff does not know about? Did he say something to the referee that inspired the calls they got? What am I missing?
