What is the difference between 2012 ND & FSU?

  • I was thinking about this the other day and I thought it was a good question. We bowled together last year and beat them, yet this year ND is going to the title game. They played a much harder schedule than us in 2012 and you can't tell me they just have more talent than we do. So what happened?

Not much... They got some breaks. Pitt missing the chip shot field goal or Standford getting shafted at the goal line.. We were up in the 4th in both of our losses and shit the bed. Costly turnovers and bad decision making by our qb did us in. I'm a big EJ backer, but he makes some of the absolute worst decisions... If the kid just knew how to throw the ball away we would be12-0.

  • ND also got a horrible PI call on 4th and long down two TDs in the 4th vs. Pitt. FSU got zero breaks from the Zs all season, as usual.

FSU Football. Making cool the new swag since 2013.

  • Nd getting all those lucky breakers kept uf out of the MNC, do I'm fine with it. Don't like nd but would much rather have them in the spot.
Back to topic, their qb made plays and the hot a few breaks while we missed opportunities and made a lot of mistakes at the wrong time in both our losses.

  • I agree with a these posts. Luck is such a big part in winning championships. Look back on it and see literally every important break this year went their way. From PI call to the Stanford fourth down to Purdue's missed chip shot FG. Compare that to us losing Jenkins and Reid at the start of the season and all the terrible breaks in the NCST and UF games. With a few ND-type breaks, we could've won both of those and been playing for a NC.

  • ND got some breaks--all teams do--but it's what they DID NOT do that has them where they are. They didn't give up blocked punts late in games on the road, They didn't consistently take sacks that took them out of field goal range or turn the ball over in the red zone (which ND did a lot last year). When it mattered most, ND's defense did not give up points on goal line stands.

Did they get lucky beating Pitt? Yes, and we were kinda got lucky beating VT. They weren't lucky beating Stanford (that last call could have gone either way and it's not like Stanford was going in for the lead). More importantly, they weren't lucky when they crushed Oklahoma at Norman or beat USC on the road.

Do you think ND would have needed a last minute INT to beat GaTech?

  • Better OVERALL coaching.... Our coaching top to bottom is good...there's is better.

    Pretty much.

  • Pretty impressive what they did -- I remember looking at their schedule when it came out and thinking they could be in for 6-6. Obviously the schedule didn't turn out to be quite as difficult as originally thought, but there are still some impressive wins on there. Winning at Oklahoma is no joke.

  • Better coaching, better offensive scheme, better QB. We lost our star player on defense in the first game.

    oline0175

  • COACHING. We have a ton of talent but does anyone think we have coached them up. Our schedule was a joke really if we played ND schedule we go 8-4. We have got to stop losing to ave teams like NCST, Last year Virgina and Wake the year before NC and NCST these were ave teams that we were double digit favs and we lost to. Loses to OK,FLA Clem on the road OK the others NOOOOOOOOOOO frustrated

  • Luck of the irish and our coaches 'multiple' (personalities) offense left a TON to be desired...

Their qb, although very young, gets it. Ours still wets the bed...

  • IMO

    -coaching
    -breaks
    -"execution" *in Jimbo's voice*

asses handed to us in the trenches against UF. And along those lines, not adapting to the big fronts on Offense they were using

Deserve got nothing to do with it...

  • Their defense was just a little better. Made more plays and were more physical.

  • Their toughest game against Oklahoma, they came to play and stuffed OU every time they threatened to make a comeback. Our toughest game against UF, we gave them too many early chances and couldn't stop them when we needed to late in the game.

  • ND maximized their talent and played above it. FSU routinely played to the level of competition, played passive, nonaggressive and, at times, flat-out dumb football.

    BigErn

  • Look, its always about how well players execute. Last year ND gave up a lot of turnovers in key positions.
This year we gave up a lot of turnovers the last couple games, especially against UF. Really think after 5 turnovers we were going to beat UF? Really think if those turnovers don't happen we don't beat them?
Blocked punts, we had them this year and ND did not.
Defensive stands when they needed it, ND had it this year and we did not.
Breaks, when you need it. When Pittsburg missed the winning field goal in OT, ND had 12 men on the field.
They lose that game to an unranked team and everyone is talking about them in the same terms that they discuss us.
Yes, EJs play never elevated to the point we needed it to. And that is probably the one item that cost us the most this year. NDs QB made the plays when they needed him to.

  • They went for a couple of 4th and 1's instead of always kicking field goals.

  • FSU is, has been and always will be better because Uncle Nash is a big fanatic. lollolND, for all their praying, is just a bunch of thick farm lads, who happen to be able to withstand cold weather better than most.

Matto fact, me and my friend were discussing this last month. Here's what we came up with.

Coaching - Jimbo is a rookie. Good with a chance to get better, but still not fully experienced enough to win the real toughies all the time. Rest of staff, slight edge to ND. This is PREVIOUS staffs we're talkin' here.

Talent - About equal overall with edges to both sides depending on position. Them LB's us DE's for example.

Tradition - Them longer and well established and fuller on booster participation than us. Us, Dynasty baby. This still resonates strongly throughout the land. Perhaps a bit less so at the years roll by, but still..........................

Women - FSU is the tops here, no error.

Still, for all of me they can go crap in the ocean, and that right soon.

  • This is a well diagnosed thread. What I take from it is the difference between ND, BAMA, UF and FSU is all are at about the same level.

ND against pitt should have gone to pitt.

bama showed its vulnerability against TAM. UF got lucky more than once this year and pulled games out of their ass that they should have lost. had we executed against UF there is no good reason we let that sorry offense beat us other than turnovers. I honestly dont think UF was a better team than FSU this year. We beat ourselves. Win at NCSt and the team attitude is better that loss had significant residual effect. the NCSt loss cost us a ship!!!! or at least a ticket to the game regardless of SoS and computer rankings.

A down-vote huh. OK if that makes you feel better go right ahead. You don't like my sense of humor, fine. Don't read my posts, I can stand it.

Perhaps your self-esteem is such that you can't countenance a slightly different way of putting things. You can always PM me if you have an issue. It's what a MAN would do.

  • Golston understands that he has to use his feet and arm to beat defenses and EJ thinks he can just do it with his arm... That's basically the difference
