What Haven't We Seen From Stoops' Defense?

  • Long Time Reader, First Time Poster

Had a long CFB talk with a Canes fan last night. He's one of the open minded, level headed Canes fans who also follows CFB in general. He made the comment to me that we haven't seen Anything yet in regards to Stoops Defense. I know we dabbled and experimented with a ton of stuff last season until Stoops found a package that the guys could play instinctively and not have to think. At various points throughout the season we saw: Cover 2, Cover 3, Cover 4, Cat (Corner) Blitzes, Lineman Stunts, LB Blitzes, Nickel, 3-3-5, Man. Having said all that, I ask: What haven't we seen from Stoop's Defense yet?

  • I'm no expert, but I do know that Coach Fisher has been emphasizing having multiple looks on both sides of the ball, and wants to be able to even run a little 3-4 if need be. Maybe someone like Cam Erving could get in and clog up space at the NT position, and have Brandon Jenkins coming off the edge as an OLB. Could be interesting.

  • I really just think it has to do with the addition of stunts, movement, and better coverage of defenses. Last year, the guys struggled to know where they were. As the season progressed (other than VT where Tyrod DESTROYED us) our guys felt more and more comfortable with the schemes.

I think Stoops has added more stunts, exotic blitzes, and better disguised coverages.

Also like ETC said Jimbo will want to add some 3-4. I am still not sure the NT is on the roster (to me McCloud is the closest thing we have unless we bulk up NLS for 2012) but Jimbo might even dable in it for the first 2 games to trick OU or might not show it in the first two games so he can then switch into it to trick OU.

I really think that the OU game embarrassed our players and coaches and has made them work harder for the preparation for that game. Should be fun to watch the wrinkles we put in.

Some of the players on Twitter have been talking about working on their No Huddle defense in Summer 7 on 7 drills.

In obvious passing downs, I'd like to see Stoops do what the Giants did against the Patriots in the Super Bowl: Pass rush with 4 defensive Ends.

Move Werner and Hicks to DT and let Brandon and Tank come off the edge. Not to mention you could twist and stunt those guys allow their speed and quickness to wreck havoc on an offensive line.

Oh man I like that idea!

We tried that last year against va tech.

One thing I wouldnt mind trying is the 1-5-5 on those downs or a version of it. Some might remember the Prowler from 2009. I want a better version of that. I would make Dawkins the down lineman and then have the first 5 be Jenkins, Carradine, Christian Jones, Nigel Bradham and either Telvin Smith or another DE.

Then put the back 5 as Parks, Joyner, Harris, Reid, Rhodes. Moody should be subbed on obvious passing downs.

This would be a nice wrinkle for OU. Its something Stoops team dont generally use.

  • We aren't going to be playing any 3-4.

We play alot of 3 man fronts but that doesn't make it a 3-4

True, the correct personnel isn't here yet, Jimbo wants to be multiple, but we dont have all the pieces to the puzzle. Lets be patient and enjoy the anticipation for this year.

I'd rather it be DMac instead of Hicks.

This is a great thread. I wish we could get someone to post different things about the schemes we run both offensively and defensively. Maybe once a week or every other week. I know one of the reasons I like Tomahawknation is because they will go into detail about what our plan is for our O and D.

I don't know if anyone already on here is skilled enough to go into detail about it, but i think this is something that could separate 247 from the other pay sites.

This. During the Chik-fil-A Bowl pressers, Stoops said himself that he had to dial back what he was installing and teaching big time in the early part of the season. Now with two more camps and a year in his pocket, wrinkles are coming. The man prides himself on being multiple and hardly ever giving the same look twice.

So much-- I believe-- will depend on what def lineman (DE and DT) are totally dominant early on in the season...then I believe Stoops will free up other talented lineman to come in and blow it up.rockon

I disagree with you. We won't base out of a 3-4 but I do think we'll run it some after the Wake Forest game. All of the teams after Wake run a Pro Style offense so we'll be able to get the extra LB on the field as opposed to having to play a nickel or dime to deal with the spread or misdirection. The big misconception about the 3-4 is that you need a 350lb nose guard to make it work. The reality is you need a guy that can take on a double team and still control 2 gaps, I agree we don't have the personnel to run a 3-4 full time, but I do think Amp or Jacobi can play a 0 technique in certain situations.

  • I'm definitely looking forward to see how instinctive our guys are this season compared to last. I would love to see some more corner blitzes from the nickel corner position (Harris, Joyner), much like the Canes did with Antrel Rolle.

Rhodes had a sack last year blitzing the QB in the VA game (it was on the Sun network this past Saturday btw).
