Was the punt block illegal?

  • This play kept USF in the game and kept the final score much closer than it would have been.

"Shield Blocking Scheme on Punting Plays. The Football Rules Committee reviewed several examples of shield blocking, which has become a popular scheme for punting teams. In several cases, a receiving team player attempts to jump over this type of scheme in the backfield to block a punt. In some cases, these players are hit and end up flipping in the air and landing on their head or shoulders. The committee was concerned about this type of action and proposed a rule similar to the leaping rule on place kicks that does not allow the receiving team to jump over blockers, unless the player jumps straight up or between two players."

I'm surprised nobody is discussing this

  • He jumped between our two blockers. Last few words of rule.

Kind of hard to say that definitively. Its a thin line between jumping between or jumping over. I mean, how many times have you ever seen a football player jump completely over another human?

We do need to get the punts off quicker, and I'm sure Gran will address that this week

  • Nah. It was a fluky play as a result of good effort by the USF player. Guy blocked it with the back of his helmet!

  • He clearly jumps over part of our players and makes contact as he leaps which why he was totally out of control in the air. To me that's an illegal play this years.

  • I thought he went in between. That being said I'm sure I'm a lot like Ron Cherry and his crew in that I had no idea that was even a rule.

  • I know rules are changing and I support 95% of it but I can say this, after watching it live and a few replays it looked like a young man laying out and giving his all to make a great play. I would have been embarrassed if it was called back because he lept over our players' thighs.

Agree 100%. He made a remarkable play and it was crystal clear he jumped between two of our players.

having not read the rule until now last week I definitely thought it broke the new rule. Now after rewatching and reading the rule, its a tough call. They definitely broke this rule more than once saturday night

  • There was a time not long ago when FSU would block a punt or field goal almost every game. It is exciting and can help change a game in a flash! I wish we would try it every blue moon. Jimbo is too conservative in his O playcalling, his 4th qtr playcalling with the lead and special teams imo. Back in the Dynasty we had plenty of kids that could take a punt to the house with or without the help of setting up a return or trying to block it. Would like to see us come after it. Just because we got penalized in a game last year does not mean to never try it again.

I think last year's Clemson game spooked Jimbo. I can't remember FSU really going after a punt since then.

Also, Terrance Brooks running under the Canes punter leg and barely grazing it causing a penalty

fsu miami 2011 terrible roughing the kicker call

FSU Miami 2011 terrible roughing the kicker call. This might could have been called running into the kicker but definitely not roughing the kicker.

Joyner and Demps came damn close to getting a blocked punt last year. I would love to stuff one. I realize blocking field goals are harder than they used to be due to the rule changes, but we have the push up front and the athletes to jump without a running start or leverage or around the edge to get to one. BJ Ward was an absolute master of the jump straight up block on field goals. I'd like to see players like Brooks, Demps, Joyner on ST stuff a punter and walk in for 6 too. Miss those days or us being better than even Va.Tech in their heyday at blocking kicks.

  • How pissed would you be if we blocked a punt like that and the refs decided to take it away from us? The kid made a great play and he was properly rewarded for it.

  • Not sure I like that formation. One blocker on the right side with two guys untouched. Telvin on the left without a man. Looks like McCallister is supposed to step up and plug the middle but there are three guys flying at him and Haplea. Good coaching by USF.
