Thoughts on UM coming with us (if we go) to the big 12?

    We'd be stupid to let the Miami game die. Jmo.

    It's a marquee matchup for FSU even if neither school is ranked highly, which means good attendance and money.

    It's an opportunity to play a game in Miami every other year. That's great for fans and recruits alike. I think it'd be a huge mistake to take this game away.

    Is it 100% necessary to keep playing Miami? Maybe not. Is it most likely beneficial? Probably.

    Lot of ifs with the Miami game.

    IF we go to the Big 12 and Miami does too, then no issue.

    IF we go to the Big 12 and it's a 9-game conference schedule, we can't keep the Miami game. That's 6 road games every other season. No chance.

    IF we go to the Big 12 and it's an 8-game slate, we can keep the game but we need to decide if the every 2 year trip down there is worth losing a few shots at a national title. I don't think it is, especially since we'd (likely) get 2 trips to Texas each year as a trade-off. No other BCS conference school would have 2 permanent non-conference opponents, let alone two from other BCS leagues.

    UF and Miami, Nebraska and Oklahoma, Texas and A&M no longer play. Such is the nature of this beast and life goes on for them.

    Personally I'd rather drop UF than Miami. I think UF wouldn't be opposed either. But that will never happen, the fallout would be too much.

  • Playing in Miami is meaningless for recruiting with the proliferation of TV. SEC recruits that area better than UM does and they never play down there.

  • From an outsider's view, it would be better for the B12 and for you guys if FSU and Miami both came.

    I understand why some of you guys may not personally like The U, but they're the most valuable brand out there after ND and FSU.

    Expansion is about brands and markets. That's what generates value in tv contracts, and Miami has both.

    And the more money the tv deal is worth the more money FSU is making off that contract.

    Games like FSU-Miami, UT-Miami, OU-Miami and WVU-Miami are a lot more valuable for the tv deal than anyone else being talked about besides ND and FSU.

    With FSU and Miami, the B12 would dominate the state in terms of tv markets. You want multiple schools from a high population state like FL for the tv package.

    And Miami still puts 50k fans/game in the stands when they are mediocre. If they get rolling again and start having teams like UT and OU on the schedule in addition to FSU ? That attendance will jump dramatically. As you guys know, Miami is a front-running town that likes winners.

    Miami in the B12 helps in the "land ND" effort, which is something the B12 is pushing hard to make happen.

    There's just no one else who brings the combo of brand strength and market, especially in conjunction with FSU. FSU-UM and "Catholics vs Convicts"- people still talk about those games 20 years later.

    The FSU-Miami battles in the '80's and '90's are a big part of the reason the FSU brand means as much as it does. Keeping them in the conference helps you keep building on that brand. Part of what makes the Lakers and the Celtics who they are is their shared history as rivals and the epic games they've played with national implications. Same for FSU-Miami.

    VT is the next best option, but they're not the U in terms of brand, and adding Miami helps make VT a more likely possibility anyway.

    GT, Lousiville, PItt, whoever else ? No way. Not anywhere close to the U's worth in a tv package. And obviously, that's where most of the money comes from.

    Bottom line: adding them makes the conference stronger and makes FSU more money, and that's what this move is all about- making enough money to compete on facilities and coaching salaries against UF, Bama and UGA- teams that are among the top money-generators in CFB.

    Having Miami in the B12 helps you guys compete on revenue, and that's the key to this whole thing.

    Plus- what's that old saying about keeping your friends close and your enemies closer ?

    Having Miami in the mix along with Clemson and either VT or GT gives you guys another close game for travel, another ally in the boardroom, and another reason for the media in Florida markets to lead with B12 news instead of SEC news on Saturday night.

  • I could care less about Miami. They can dry up and burn in what's left of the ACC.
