Thinking About Joining the Big 12?

  • Just do it.

Texas grad here. We'd love to have you. You've had a awesome program for years.

I think of FSU as a football school. The ACC is essentially a basketball conference.

There isn't a single Texas fan I've spoken with that wouldn't be thrilled to have Florida State in the Big 12.

  • Thanks. I cant speak for all Nole fans but I would love the move. I used to be stationed in Fort Hood and would frequent Austin when i had a chance. Would be an awesome roadtrip and although i havent been to a game there yet, i know its one of the best venues in college football. Would be nice to be in a conference that actually cares about football

  • FSU fans seem to be 50/50 with half of us super excited to join and the other half seeing a benefit but a bit reluctant.

Then there's a few ACC loyalists who I just don't get.

  • Thanks OP. We can't join soon enough in my opinion.

  • Hopefully by the end of June we are discussing who goes in what division...

cheers to the "hopefully" new Big 12 with FSU in it!!

  • I've been reading that your new contract with ESPN includes Tier 3 rights. It amounts to a $17 million payout to each school.

In the Big 12, our contract is currently $20 million per school and you get to keep your Tier 3 rights.

We sell our T-3 rights for $15 million per year. That's in addition to the $20 million we receive from the Big 12 contract.

Florida State - being located in football crazy Florida - could sell their Tier 3 rights for a small fortune.

Y'all are leaving a lot on the table staying in the ACC in my opinion.

  • We know. It's tough watching your team take it in the ass by their conference and do nothing about it.

If we don't leave the ACC I am going to halt being a booster and begin to detach from the program.

  • I am curious, and I would like the Texas guys to answer this, suppose once the new BCS is announced that the B10 decides to expand, now suddenly Texas gets as good a conf deal as they have in the B12, they also get a part of the B10 network loot, and they get to keep their own network (which tOSU is also looking into having), not to mention there is that whole B10 research tie in thing to like 800 mill...what does Texas do then?

Cause as soon as the new BCS is announced all hell is gonna break loose.

Texas fan here. The Big 12 is about to finalize a deal where all 10 members (and I assume, if you joined, you would have to agree to this) have to give up their TV rights for 13 years, i.e. the remainder of the Big 12 TV deal. So basically a team can leave the conference, but the Big 12 retains all of their TV rights and revenue. So in that case, there is no way Texas would leave for the B1G. In any case, Texas is committed to the Big 12.

Good question. We've recently had instability in the Big 12. I think the issue has been addressed in an ironclad manner.

Each school has agreed to sign over their TV rights to the Big 12 for 13 years. That means, if a school leaves, they leave their TV rights with the Big 12.

Essentially - THERE IS NO WAY OUT!

If Texas joined the Big 10, each TV dollar we generate would still be the property of the Big 12.

It really means - no school would ever leave since they would lose their TV money and no conference would ever want any of us because we don't bring TV money with us.

I think it's the ultimate commitment.

UT passed on the Big 10 and Pac 12 last year, not the other way around. The Big 12 schools are all committing their Tier 1 TV rights for 13 years under the new contract so UT is going nowhere. UT could have left for any conference it wanted to last year but preferred to stay in the Big 12. If the Big 12 adds FSU, CU, GT and Miami or VT, it would be a huge TV and Tier 3 and recruiting boon for all the schools in the new Big 14 that would position the Big 14 to compete with the SEC on every level. The status quo is much worse for all the prospective Big 14 schools and would allow the SEC to continue to dominate.

Ignore the grant of rights. If FSU and Louisville join the Big 12 (I don't see why Clemson and Miami also wouldn't join at this point, but let's assume they don't join), in 5-10 years, if the Big Ten shows interest in Texas again, do you guys return the interest? Would you want to bring OU and some others with you to the Big Ten? Would you want to go to the Big Ten by yourselves? Would you want to stay in the Big 12?

I think that's what pben is asking. He's very much concerned that if FSU were to move to the Big 12 that shortly thereafter Texas would leave and we'd be hung out to dry. I don't personally see why Texas would leave if FSU and possibly Clemson and Miami join, but you never know.

That is actually true, I googled this (SAETEXAS take note) the conference has the member schools report to it, then it submits those findings, so it gives the "appearance" of running it.

I also googled the B12 contract, and indeed Texas is locked in, so that answers that.

In the future I will google first, post second.

Ok, these Texas guys are beginning to warm me up to this B12 idea.

Any way we can get out of having to play Iowa State?

    Pbenuncensored26482

  • My sister graduated from Texas so I have taken them on as a second team. I'd love to see FSU and Texas play on a regular basis even though it means I won't be quite the fan of Texas since I want FSU to win always. Would love to go to some games in Austin, I loved that place when I went down there for her graduation. I think it would make a great rivalry.

First, you cannot ignore a 13 year GOR. It is a huge commitment. Texas already passed on the Big 10 last year to stay in the Big 12 and in 13 years you will have four super-conferences of 16 teams that will not include the ACC. So FSU is going somewhere else ultimately to remain relevant. FSU, Miami, GT and CU add nothing to the SEC TV footprint so it makes complete sense to go to the Big 12. The move of these 4 to the Big 12 would likely trigger expansion by the SEC to NC and VA for TV reasons and they will be done. The Big 10 will likely scoop up the AAU members of the ACC. The real danger for FSU is that their leadership rejects the Big 12 now and gets left out. It could happen if the Big 12 moves on the other ACC teams.

  • I would enjoy a move to the Big 12, as I have stated earlier, I live in Louisiana(Alexandria, which is a 2 hour drive from Dallas). I plan on staying here for a while(unless there's a chance at a promotion at a different facility), so the idea of games in Dallas, even making a trip to Austin or any other stadiums within a reasonable drive would be very enjoyable for me. Plus, the Big 12 ACTUALLY cares for football, instead of the ACC, where when you play WF or NCST, you would be lucky to get maybe 50 fans from there, leaving a huge chunk of stadium empty.

Iowa has extremely cordial people. You'll like them. They are well coached. They surprise someone every year.

If FSU and Notre Dame would join the Big 12 and bring the TV sets that follow your schools, why would anyone want to leave?

I think schools around the country would be begging to join us.
