The NCAA may allow transfers to play right away

  • That would be a historic change, but one that I hope has some limitations besides the 2.6 GPA. For instance, the player has to get a release from his previous school and that he cannot transfer into the same conference or a teams rival, etc...

New Transfer Model Would Reduce Eligibility Consequences

Details are few, but there is enough information about a new NCAA transfer model to make educated guesses about what the rules would look like.

  • I think it would be horrible idea. Baseball allowed transfers to play right away and the turnover was ridiculous. That is no longer the case. Transfers must sit out.

    fsukum

  • Will someone wake me up when the NCAA makes a decision that makes sense? You're just asking for trouble here. The fact that transfers have to sit is the only thing keeping CFB from free agency. I could see coaches recruiting players NOT EVEN ON THEIR TEAM.

Can't the NCAA just deal with transfers on a case by case basis? If there's extenuating circumstances, then fine, let the kid do what he wants. But they are opening the door for all sorts of shenanigans here.

But I'm sure the NCAA has already thought it all through.....

  • This has players getting recruited by other schools' boosters and staffs written all over it. If this goes into effect i wonder how many scandals it will take to rescind the rule. it will get rescinded

As a compromise schools may be required to give 4 years schollies.

That would end SEC dominance overnight.

  • Not a horrible idea at all. It will cut out the lies and bullshit that goes on during recruting. All coaches and recruiters are liars, kid shows up and is shoved aside for one reason or another, no reason why it should be allowed. It'll happen sooner or later.

    DinTexas

  • Let them go.

    DinTexas

  • Another problem is with with coaching turnover. What happens when a coach leaves and takes prized recruits with them?

    haitian_nole

  • With certain restrictions this could be ok but not an open market. Kids will leave to go to a better team or start immediately. You would never be able to build a team if its open market.

  • Hopefully will not come to be known as the "Jameis Winston rule."

Not true. I doubt players would bail a good coach and program to go play for an ahole. That wouldn't happen.

  • If coaches can leave, players should be able to leave.

Scholarships are still limited, so it's not going to greatly change the vast majority of players.

Well ran programs with good coaches would benefit and bad coaches would watch the program burn down around them. Pete Carroll would become a god and Nick Saban likely will be the last of his type...

    Agree 100%

  • There is a reason baseball changed away from this rule in 2007. Players can leave, btw.

  • Just imagine if they let schools pay their players as well?

Irrelevant. Marcus Lattimore had no chance to be drafted out of high school like bb players. FB coaches come and go never fulfilling a contract and always renegotiating yet the players should be locked in with no recourse whatsoever?
That would act as some motivation to make sure players get some decent treatment from coaches and staff.

  • The rich will get richer. You will see top wrs transfer to play with a good young qb

Players can leave. They just have to sit one year on scholarship and not play. That should not change.

Then coaches ought to have to do the same. Or finish their damned contracts. The whole thing is a massice industry, except when it comes ot the players, they're "student athletes".

Hey I am an ex-college athlete and almost always come down on the side of athletes with it comes to the NCAA.
But, you sign your scholarship papers with FSU not Jimbo. FSU offers you tuition, books, room and board, not Jimbo.
FSU spends lots of money recruiting you to be an athlete at their school. Pays you [not enough in my mind]. Gives you trainers, coaches of all kinds, facilities to train, dietitians, etc. So why should there not be a small road block when an athlete decides, "hey I want to go play over there next year"?

Every athlete knows you don't go to a school because of a coach. You go to a school that has an appropriate commitment to your sport demonstrated by good coaches, facilities, trainers, etc.

  • A case study of why this should not be done is Lynch and Prestwood. Imagine that situation and others if they were given full reign to leave without sitting out. It would be a free agency.

    fsukum

  • I think this is a great idea for seniors or RS Juniors with the schools permission. If your a 4th year junior and are buried on the depth chart this would allow you to go to a D-1 school and play. If your a senior and buried or lost out on starting this would give you the opportunity to play. But anyone who thinks that boosters wouldn't be recruiting star players away haven't be following the SEC..

That's a better plan IMO. There are just too many freshmen who would get upset for some stupid reason and transfer. Limit it to 4th and 5th year players and I would be more okay with it. Still, I hope they don't do allow it at all
