Terrence Brooks and Karlos Williams

  • He is listed at 5-11, 196 on Seminoles.com

But some have said he has bulked up to at least 200-plus, as he has 100% committed himself physically to be our safety.

I think all of us are in agreement that he has a bright future at Florida State, and really showed out in the second half of the season. He even looked good at corner his freshman year when he played sparingly, and had a nice pass break up against one of the cupcakes.

Even last year, Stoops continued to cross train him at safety and nickel, just in case, and because Stoops love to have versatility and options in his secondary for situations like THIS.

Now, hypothetically, what is the light comes on for Karlos Williams from Aug 6 all the way up to Murray State on Sept 1? Do you think we would slide Brooks back to the position we recruited him at?

I know the majority of us on here had pegged Los as our starter going into this season when he signed his LOI to Florida State. Now, if all remains as is, it appears that we will only get two seasons minimum out of Karlos as a starter going into his Junior season. Personally, I expect more out of 5-star prospects, and am still smh [shaking my head] at how poorly he handled everything last year.

Fortunately, I do believe our secondary will be just as good this year, with or without Reid. His biggest value to our team was that he was the best return man in college football, and teams were scared to even kick to him. As a defender, he was high risk/high reward, consistently breaking off of his assignments to try and go for the highlight reel.

    What are your thoughts?

Whatever is in the best interest of the team. IF the light comes on for Williams to where there will be no drop off between him and Brooks, and IF Brooks can even still play CB and be effective, then I'd be okay with it.

    I personally don't believe either will/would happen.

I still believe Brooks can play corner. He played it his entire career, and still lined up in practice as the nickel corner. Which means all the pressure would be on Los to live up to his hype. Hopefully we hear a lot of good stuff about him starting next week, because until now, I haven't heard/seen/read any glowing endorsements about him in practice or off the field.

Although he did have two nice hits on our running backs in the spring game. And we all know he is definitely capable of returning kicks as well. But the fact that Jimbo was ready to move him to RB doesn't sit well with me or my expectations of him as a defensive back.

Bush I think you're hinting something to us. I loved Los when we recruited him. Great, kid funny. I still do. But as you know stars don't always mean that much but they are usually correct when they label a kid 5 stars that a kid has the size and physical tools to excel in college. To be honest none of us know if the "experts"are great at talent evaluating.

IMO the real question here is can he help now or in the future on Defense. At this point he isn't Lamarcus Joyner or Brooks. We know Los has great size and speed and is my favorite kick returner in a long time. Does he have the hips to play DB. I'm no expert so Bush or anyone else let me know? Fisher wanted to move him to RB which says to me 2 things. #1 we are short on RB talent to JF's satisfaction and #2 he isn't indefensible to the defense. I agree with you on Reid. To me Reid would have been better suited to the offense but we were desperate in the secondary.

It's meaningless to talk about Los learning the playbook etc. if the kid isn't a fit for defense mentally or physically. He is no Dummy and can learn the playbook. Where is he best used? Bush warren anyone with some knowledge chime in. It's no knock on Los. Darrell Revis is the best cover CB in football but would be a lousy linebacker.

  • Not hinting at anything, no coded message here, lol

We now have a need at corner going into the season. Brooks would have been the most likely candidate to fill that position until he was switched to safety. We have a 5-star thoroughbred just chillin on the sidelines, rather than contributing to the actual game, [remind you of anyone?] This season will be crucial to his development and future at Florida State [my opinion..] You know by the 2nd year if you have a gamer on your hands or not -- although there are some cases where they develop really late, but you get the point.

  • I was wondering to myself earlier today if Karlos could actually play corner. He is one of the fastest players on the team, I just wasn't sure if he had the swivel to play the position or not. I know he played just about everywhere in high school, physical, good ball skills and extremely athletic. You wouldn't think someone of his size would be able to play corner normally, but in Stoops system I actually think he could be a damn good boundary corner. Maybe even some time at the nickel position, think of the flexibility we'd have in the nickel package.

I agree about Reid, we'll miss him on punt returns but as a corner he never set the world on fire and as Bush said he was a high risk/high reward player. Those worried about missing his leadership, I think Timmy Majic will make up for that. That kid is a monster and seems like he will become a great vocal leader.

  • If you tell me that our starting secondary is Xavier Rhodes and Terrance Brooks at corner and Karlos WIlliams and Lamarcus Joyner at safety I'll take that all day every day. That being said I really don't know what the deal is with Karlos.

  • Man what is up with Karlos? Is it the Playbook? Is it lack of effort?

I thought he came from a well rounded family?

Just mot an instinctive safety... doubt he is ever a superstar there

  • I love Brooks...but Karlos has that big-play factor that Greg Reid had (Without the knuckle headedness hopefully). If Karlos gets it together then i want him out there...period.

  • How kids can come into a college like FSU and not give 100% is beyond me. From what I have read Karlos appears to be more focused this year and more than likely needed some time to mature and catch up with his physical maturity. He is such a beast of a player.

With Brooks I would be fine with playing him anywhere in the secondary and we can obviously do that. I like Brooks in the nickle back spot. I feel with loss of G5 we should play our men strategically based upon our opponent and defense. We should move Brooks from his safety spot situational with the one constant at safety being Joyner. Obviously if Karlos turns into a force we can play him at safety more.

If we lose Telvin I would like to see a lot of 4-2-5 Defense being used with as much speed in the secondary as possible. First and foremost teams are not going to run on us they are going to try and break us down with the pass. Possibly use this D even if we dont lose Telvin.

  • I was actually thinking about this when I heard about Reid. I kinda got down then thought abt this and thought that this could be the thing that could help Los get on the field. Brooks was a good corner when he was used there at certain times in the year. And if he hasn't lost a lot of speed and flexibility then I think having him on the opposite side of rhodes would be great. Los has to be on the field, he could be like moody with the big hits but like Joyner with his speed and ability to change a game.

  • i think we should leave the safeties as they are and allow them to be the best duo in the conference. let Darby, Waisome, and Hunter fight it out for starting fcb in base sets. have Hunter move inside to nickel back like he was always going to, and then have Darby and Waisome battle for the fcb in nickel.

When exactly has Karlos proven that he has that big play factor on defense?

  • I rewatched the spring game recently and payed a lot of attention to Brooks. He looked great, always around the ball and in position to make the play. Seemed to have really good instincts, just a step behind Joyner and I love me some #20.

Do you think, if he doesnt start this year, that he'd be open to a move to OLB next season? Potentially both spots could be open and with the playbook issues at safety, a read and react position like Will might suit him better.

No he doesn't. Karlos groupies need to understand that he isn't good enough start.

    otown nole29245

  • I think Los should be on offense or at OLB

    bbnole33

  • There were some rumors about Los moving to RB in the spring, right? I'd say if that move is to ever happen it'll happen soon. The thing with a kid as athletic as him...if the light ever comes on...playing safety from a mental standpoint, he could be one of the best in the game. Just a scary athlete. It's hard to give up on him as an S, but if he really doesn't have the right feel for playing safety, that may be a problem.

He also went to a pretty crappy HS in terms of football, right...Ridge (Davenport, FL)? Could be remembering this wrong. But if that's the case, you gotta think there's a gap in the level of coaching vs. say what Lamarcus Joyner got at STA. Thus, the coaches could be willing to give him more time to be coached up. Karlos seems like a very bright kid and a natural type of leader, so having him on the field would really be big for this team.

  • My hope is that Los decides since he didn't unseat Brooks during the Spring that now is the time to move to offense.

    GoNolez2004

  • I may be a fool, homer or combo of the two but I think Brooks has a 6 int, 50 tackle kind of year and is a real star for us at times. Best safety tandem we've had since back into the 90s.

  • Do not want to lose the flexibility that our safeties offer right now w/ Brooks & Joyner

Fish I may be missing something but if he doesn't the flexibility to make an impact at safety don't you need more for Corner? I'm not an expert by any means but he clearly has the size and speed.
