Talks Heating Up: Maryland and Rutgers to BIG TEN

  • TitoJamesTheIII said...

Hey we'll pay any buyout fees I'm sure if you take us with you. One thing for sure about UL is that we've got great administration. Tons of ranked programs, new facilities for EVERYTHING, buckets and buckets of extra cash(somehow) even though we're in the only ship sinking faster than the ACC

Deal! I'll have my people call your people.

  • Two-pronged effort by Delany as he enters probably his last few years as league commish. Wetzel makes both of these points.

1 - Obviously money. Not a lot of people watch Rutgers and Maryland in NYC/DC area, but as long as BTN is on cable packages in those areas, the revenue will be flowing in.

2 - Competition. The only way the Big 10 has any chance of competing with the SEC in the future is to recruit new areas to find athletes. The north doesn't have as many anymore with population shift. Adding Maryland, New Jersey and the northeast will help -slightly- (it's a start at least). It's probably why the Big Ten will go after North Carolina and Georgia Tech too. Add the Beltway area, Jersey, North Carolina and Georgia to the recruiting base and it could help the conference field more competitive teams... and that philosophy would make Delany a genius if the Big Ten starting becoming a deeper football league.

It's not a great situation. The league is making a ton of money, but they'll be stretching themselves out. When Delany leaves, the new commish better be powerful with many factions in play (Nebraska, East coast institutions with different ways of thinking, keeping Michigan and Ohio State happy, Penn State's situation, etc.). I'd be really happy for Rutgers, as they'd be trading in a dreadful situation for 100 years of security... but I'm not a fan of adding either Maryland or Rutgers. Nebraska was a value add and I don't see that with these two.

The fact that you apparently believe Dabo is "pretty good" but have been a vocal opponent of Jimbo blows my mind.

Great post and the fact those same posters are shocked when there are rumors that Jimbo isn't happy in tallahassee.

You guys are in the WAC?

But seriously, you'd never pay our buyout. And I'd never expect it. Louisville is a very good school for the Big 12 to add, they just don't fit what the ACC, Big Ten or SEC are looking for.

But a 16-team Big 12 with FSU, Clemson, Louisville and 3 of Pittsburgh, Miami, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and NC State is a very, very nice conference.

  • FSU, VT, Clemson, and GT need to get together and pool their money for the buyout fee to GTFO of this basketball conference ASAP. FSU, Clemson, GT can bring along Louisville to the Big 12 to get to 14. VT + 1 (NC State, maybe?) can use MD's and the DC/VA TV market's possible move to the B1G as bait for the SEC to bite on them to get to a more schedule friendly 16.

    #2 is false.
B1G teams already recruit in those areas.
Also, unlike other conferences there aren't split factions or bullies within the B1G. There is equality within the conference and when the presidents vote it is typically unanimous. I suspect the SEC is the same way too. This unity is one of the reasons why the B1G was so attractive to Nebraska.

Well, obviously.. but if that state is inside the conference footprint, you're going to have much more success recruiting in that state. Ohio has been keeping the conference afloat for years now with prep talent. Time to branch out eastward and southward.

  • Swofford is a PUNK!

One of things I've noticed about the ACC and expansion is that when we accepted as a PARTIAL member, we rolled out the carpet like the SEC and B1G! Yet, when we accepted Pitt & Syracuse into the conference, you didn't see none of the fanfare. Swofford wasn't seen on campus with the ACC backdrop, you didn't see him side by side with the ADs of both Pitt & Syracuse. Everything, including the acceptance happened over the phone...for the schools, for the fans and for the media.

Swofford treats this conference like a second rate conference and has no respect for it's member institutions outside of his beloved Carolina.

You can't lead, if your attitude in expansion is to go after teams NOBODY WANTS (Boston College & Syracuse)!

This conference's biggest regret is choosing John as it's commissioner. WHERE THE HELL IS OUR ACC NETWORK...WHY ISN'T IT ON CABLE?!?!?!?!

I thought Youtube was supposed to be a financial boon for the ACC? lol
