Talks Heating Up: Maryland and Rutgers to BIG TEN

  • NoleReb said...

I think the Big 12 SHOULD want us, but they had a chance to make a move this past summer and opted to pursue the Notre Dame pipe dream instead. It's not a foregone conclusion.

And I'm not worried about the $50 million, either.

Sounded to me like we were just a year ahead of the schedule, but that was before the 50M fantasy buyout/ND bullshit. No idea where things stand now.

He was one of two presidents to vote against the $50 million buyout and was pissed it was that high. If he had absolutely no intention of leaving why wouldn't he vote against the buyout?

Good point, but I'm still not sold that his overall position has really changed all that much. That to me, was basically a sound business decision, and it reinforces the thought that we are not in a really sound conference when the decisions by all but one other member are being made on scare tactic positions ... but then again, I realize I'm an odd duck here with my thoughts.

Our President has no intention of changing conferences. ***End of discussion.***

    Except it's not.

  • Please Maryland, leave. Be the catalyst to get us out of this awful conference.

    =============

Wetzel saying USF and UCF were the only non-UConn candidates worth taking? WTF is he thinking? Terrible schools to add. And, uh, you forgot Louisville, chap.

  • Always thought it would be nice for us to go out with the conference championship in our hip pocket.

If Maryland really makes this happen, please, please, please, please let us follow. I promise to quit smoking, stop over-eating, stop viewing porn, stop being a questionably bad person, stop hating UF, etc and so forth if this could only happen.

    Ok, who am I kidding.

I will never stop hating UF.

    Fuck you ACC.

  • I think FSU feels like a lot of MD fans feel if you aren't in the Carolina's your opinion doesnt matter. A lot of MD fans are ready to make the jump for that reason alone. If we jump hope you guys do to and NC st, Clem, UVA, get shafted real hard.

The fact that you apparently believe Dabo is "pretty good" but have been a vocal opponent of Jimbo blows my mind.

Jimbo is "pretty good" -- I view them roughly equally at this point.... considering what they've had to work with.

However -- I do have higher expectations for Jimbo. I firmly believe, all things being equal, FSU is a much easier sell to a kid...

And it's not like I've never complimented Jimbo.... I've said a dozen times he's a fantastic recruiter and does everything right, short of 'game day'. There is no question -- he's earned a right to coach another year here... I just measure the delta between his offense from 6-years ago and the offense he fields now... and his game management from 6-years ago... and his game management now.... and have trouble understanding why we are still making so many of the same mistakes.

If he increases his rate of improvement, he will be one of the best coaches of all time.

    inner city.

    Thank you -- fixed.

Anyway, my point is...it's hard to be the best when you surround yourself with riff-raft. The trick is determining what % of the acc suckyness is cyclical and will shift over time.... vs.... what % of it is residual, because they pour their resources into other things.

The residual suck is far too high in my opinion and I think the ACC is more likely to become the Big East... before it becomes the SEC.

Plus... the Big12's death penalty is so damn effective... much more than the ACC's absurd 50 million dollar BS.... so that conference is going to be extremely stable. Clearly the ACC didn't think their way through this 50 million scheme.... if there is already someone ready to fight/pony up the money to jump ship a few months later. No way in hell would this happen with the Big12 Death Penalty... that all members have agreed to.

    Negative.

After 6-years of evidence, I see no reason why anyone should expect that his 'offensive/game management' rate of improvement will increase dramatically.... it's changed so little over this 6-year period.

In my opinion, hiring an OC is the only thing that will significantly change the 'offensive/game management' rate of improvement.... Now...If he is smart enough to put his ego aside and do it this off-season -- then I will be very impressed.

And you will hear me crowing a very different tune, until enough time has passed to come to a conclusion on said changes.

  • Honestly Cuth -- on a scale of 1 to 100...

Completely ignoring the player's talent levels, which have changed drastically throughout this time...

What point value would you give Jimbo's playcalling in his first season.. And what point value would you give him this season?

What point value would you give Jimbo's game-management in his first season... And what point value would you give him this season?

And let's say 2001 FSU, 1992 FSU, 2012 Oregon, 2001 Miami, and 2005 USC... are the benchmark.... for being 100.

  • This goes to show you how much of a joke John Swofford is. He thinks he's smart, smooth and stealthy, but the truth of the matter is that his incompetence, short-sightedness and arrogance weakened the conference's position.

Who the hell goes after Boston College during a round of expansion when schools such as West Virginia, Rutgers and Louisville are waiting to be snatched away?

Who in the world locks in their conference with ESPN when they are notorious for undervaluing their partners?

Who's idea is it to partner with Raycom Sports....what states are they in outside of North Carolina? Would the SEC do the same? Would the Big Ten cripple their conference the way we did?

Why haven't we split the divisions North & South? I know! John Swofford, no-sex-getting-a**, is too weak and too cowardly to find another school to anchor the north, ie Penn State. Mind you, if he were a skilled negotiator, money would not be an issue because by going out on the open-market, the value of the league would rise therefore the windfall would have been akin to the Pac-12's deal with it's partners.

Bottomline, this conference is going to get poached again by all three major conferences and John Swofford will be the one to blame. #IdespiseJohnSwofford

Ridiculous. Oklahoma is the only team in the Big 12 this year that probably could have beaten us. And I'm not sure how likely that even is.

  • In a phone interview Saturday night with the Orlando Sentinel, FSU trustee chair Allan Bense said any rumors tying FSU with the SEC and any further conference expansion were just that at this point -- rumors.

"The board has not discussed it and I have not had a chance to speak with President [Eric] Barron about it," Bense said.

For the last three years, FSU has been at the center of conference expansion rumors involving the SEC and the Big 12. A nationally branded school with a football program that generates attention, FSU has allegedly long been the desire of other conferences.

Florida State trustee chair says board hasn't discussed move from ACC to SEC

Florida State's trustee board chair Allan Bense told the Orlando Sentinel on Saturday night that the board has not discussed a move to the SEC as rumors suggest. News of Maryland's potential look at the Big Ten was even news to him, Bense said.

8-teams in the conference could beat us, if we played like we did vs. USF, NC State, Virginia Tech, or Miami (4-games)

4-teams could beat us on our average day (Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, K-State)

1-team would beat our A-game (K-State)....but I doubt they'd ever see it honestly.

I'd like to believe we'd play up to our competition... but even if that is true, we'd probably have 2 more losses this year if we were in that conference. With that said, I'd rather lose 3 games vs. top 25 big 12 opponents... vs. 1 to a suck acc team.... because it makes us that much stronger in the future.

We struggle to put away horrible teams like Miami, nc state, vtech, and usf. And you think we could run the table in a conference that is 10x as tough? I don't know what to say.

Swoffords son was some executive or something like that at Raycom and they were about to go under until Swofford insisted they get ACC games
