Spetman's contract..

  • When is it up?

    I hope it isn't renewed.

  • Not soon enough

  • It's not going to be easy to can the guy. When is the last time we had this type of run in the director's cup standings? We have virtually had record setting or tying years for the university each of his years in office, I believe.

Before anyone jumps on me, I realize he was hired to be TK's puppet and was underqualified for the gig. Also, I don't have the knowledge personally to evaluate what impact he has had on the director's cup standings.

I'm just noting that the standings are one important metric for evaluating an AD.

  • I am really not sure this guy has done anything to merit the type of disdain he receives.

  • His contract is up in either February or March of 2013.

He was brought here for two reasons. To be a puppet for TK and to show the NCAA that we were cleaning up the athletic department (former military guy). Neither of those things are needed anymore and he has repeatedly shown he is in over his head. Our Sears Cup standings are largely due to Dave Hart.

Hart hired Ham, Krikorian, Braman, Jones, and many of our successful coaches. Spetman "hired" the new volleyball coach who has been great, but I believe he was actually hired by our associate AD for women's sports (who I don't think is even at FSU anymore). Our successes in the Sears Cup are primarily due to Hart not Spetman.

Lets bring in a real AD who knows how to lead, speak in public, fund raise, and understands the complexities of conference expansion and the politics of big boy athletics.

Ask Christian Ponder and Dekota Watson why.

I consider Andy Miller to be more of an FSU AD than Spetman.

  • Pure hypothetical scenario (not trying to take Randy's side):
If FSU lands itself in the Big12 in July (like some speculate), increases it's Revenues by $6-10M a year, gets Big12 to pay part of it's exit fee, comes even to and possibly exceeds SEC revenues, and closes the the budget shortfall, would we be able to get rid of Spetman?

Additionally, if FSU wins the ACC this year and has a good showing in Orange Bowl, would he get any credit for supporting the coaching staff the last few years and their financial requests? Not having much to work with, he has been able to hold it together for this year's run.

Unfortunately, changing AD's usually requires a public failure on some level (losses, conference bungles, scandals, etc). In that light, I'm not sure I would want to pay that cost.

  • Spetman won't be renewed, I'll almost guarantee it. Great guy, extremely nice, but not a BCS conf AD.

Why do Ponder and Watson not like him?

  • If he fails to get us in the Big 12 or SEC he should be blackballed from the University.

I agree. A former offficer pulling this vanishing act. Inexcusable, puppet or no. You go out and take your medicine as long as the checks don't bounce.

a nice guy? sure. Actually, a very nice guy. If that is the lone qualification I will turn over a new leaf and be the next AD.

Tennessee is a dumpster fire. Maybe Hart would come back. Yes, I know, a hope with no basis in reality. What about the guy from La. Tech?

After news broke that Bobby wasn't coming back Christian Ponder and Dekota Watson had to face the reporters. They were blind sided by it.

Spetman didn't have the decency to face the reporters and sent college kids to do his dirty work.

    It was a spineless act.

That was one of the most pathetic display of leadership I've ever seen

  • I am not going to pretend to know what AD we should want and if Spetman is a good one. That being said, we have top athletic programs in most of the sports at this school and for that reason it is going to be tough to justify getting rid of Spetman. Really the only thing I have a huge problem with is being reactive as oppose to proactive with regards to the conference realignment. I get the feeling that FSU makes Spetman look a lot better than he is at his job as opposed to Spetman making FSU look better than it really is.

Andy Staples: Make no mistake: FSU just fired a legend without explaining why - TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The second-winningest coach in the history of Division I-A football got fired Tuesday, and the men who fired him sent a pair of 21-year-olds to explain everything. Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder and linebacker Dekoda Watson were thrown in front of a wall of cameras Tuesday afternoon, the only flesh-and-blood spokesmen for a once-proud program that had just axed the man who built it.
