Some perspective on our coach

  • Living in Tennessee and seeing what these fans have gone through makes me feel proud of what we have here in Jimbo.

Tennessee fired their legend coach Fulmer. Then thought they had a home run hire in Lane. How could they have known at the time how wrong they were. After he got them in trouble with the NCAA, and slipped off to Cali. Then they thought they were making an integrity hire in Dooley. Turned out he could not assemble a staff or coach his way out of a wet paper bag. Now their fans are going through an up and down roller coaster ride trying to find the next Fulmer. Lots of coaches saying no, and even more embarrassment.

We were lucky enough to have a seamless transition from our legend to a new era. We hired
a guy with morals (and as far as we know runs the program within the rules). He put together an A+ staff with the same integrity for the rules and coaching passion. He brought us from mediocrity to a contender in the game. We now have great recruiting classes and enough talent to put us in the hunt every year. Yes he has some things he cant still improve, but we are a big step from where we were, and a huge leap from where Tennessee is. Don't know about ya'll but really puts things in perspective of where we could be. GO NOLES!!!

I'm not a huge Fulmer fan but he did just get inducted into their hall of fame.

He typed their legend of a coach. Fulmer did win the last and never again championship for Tennessee. So I understood it as nationally he does not compare to the greats in the game but in Knoxville they are coming from a different perspective especially after Kiff (that's what i call him bc i try to stay hip) and Dooley.

Good post... and it captures the essence of what our program has to choose.

In my opinion, what Fisher has displayed up until this point leads me to believe he is likely to yield similar results as Fulmer / Beamer style... which means, on average we will have 3-4 losses on down years and 1-2 losses on up years... with an occasional 5-loss, during a down year with a hard schedule. This means he's winning ~80% of his games. Now I know some people are going to say, "Fulmer won a MNC"...but everyone who was watching back then knows how much of a fluke that was... And that type of fluky season will not be possible when the new playoff system arrives.

    My question to the fan-base:
If we're approaching Jimbo's ceiling and he proves to be more Fullmer/Beamer (than Saban)... are we going to live with it... and accept we have a "good" coach who is extremely unlikely to deliver us a MNC... or are we going to roll the dice and risk going backwards, in order to secure a "great" coach who can deliver a MNC?

What are we playing for here?

You can downvote all you want but Fulmer was run out of town.

This^^^ he is their legend coach. I hear Tenn fans that would want him back.

  • I think the new coaches that Jimbo brings in will give us a glimpse into what his ceiling is. If he uses an OC that takes pressure off of him, or isn't afraid to hire a big name assistant will show growth as a head coach. I am glad we have Jimbo, looking forward to seeing the new coaching staff .

And if he continues being OC? And refuses to bring in one after this season?

For me, the only thing left Fisher needs to prove is that he can accept criticism and admit he was wrong. That NC State press conference really didn't show any of that and his play calling against UF and GTech showed the same thing.

Did you catch the one midweek? He took full responsibility and blamed his play calling.

I'm not going to go on my long anit Jimbo rants, but the results our team got vs teams with significantly inferior talent, there is obviously a lot that needs to be fixed. I was ready for Bobby to go, but Jimbo Fisher is no Bobby Bowden. In the 90s, vs ACC teams of similar talent to the ones now, Bobby crushed teams to the point that we had them all beat before they got off the bus. QB regularly got knocked out of the game and our offense had closed up the game by the end of the first half.f

I feel like so much time has passed and people have forgotten how that looks, or never seen it, and have accepted how our team looked this year as ok.

How is Hart messing things up? He inherited Dooley, and nobody wants to coach Tennessee right now, and can you blame them? That's a massive task ahead, with some serious disadvantages.
