All of the guys who talked to him about this story basically said there seemed to be some holes in the story, but that it was a difficult topic to call him out on. If they would have called him out and pursued it really hard during the interviews and he wasn't lying they would be viewed as the biggest dicks ever. Kind of a tough situation for the reporters.

I say yes. The level of journalistic incompetence or extreme sloppiness he showed in reporting the Te'o story should be far above the threshold for termination.
1. Fact checkers contacted Stanford and could not uncover the fantasy girl ever being a student at Stanford.
2. Could not find any evidence of a death much less the funeral of the fantasy girl.
3. Not confirmed, but fact checkers have stated off the record that they also fact checked the alleged construction company she was running the time (Clark Construction I think and there was no record of the company much less her running it). Thamel admitted to 1 and 2.
4. Before you downvoters use your itchy trigger finger, remember he trashed us after the Orange Bowl.
Lastly, what kind of training goes on at the NY times? First Jason Blair and no this? Yes, Thamel was at the NY times until September.
The worst part of all of this; initially it looked like te'o was just trying to either protect himself from something coming out or this was an on campus story that spun out of control because it was picked up by ESPN and NBC. now it just looks like a scam (one he was in on the whole time) just to get pub.
FSU Football. Making cool the new swag since 2013.

Should SI fire Pete Thamel?
