Good news for FSU
Georgia coach Mark Richt has agreed to a new five-year contract that will carry him through the 2016 season.
sports.espn.go.comThis is very true. To the outsiders, Richt looks pretty good. That is where the mediocrity comes in though. He does just well enough to not deserve being fired but is not lighting the SEC world on fire. For every inspired game they play, they have a game like their bowl game where you realize he plays not to lose more often than he plays to win. He has gotten very soft in his later years and brings the Bowdenesque loyalty to the program where he has a hard time making the tough calls. Tough calls like getting rid of Mike Bobo in favor of a real OC. The Grantham hire saved him, but that took 2 years too long too.
Regardless, FSU has done very well against him in the recruiting wars. They always get their hometown boys and more recently have had better success. That said, they do not control GA like Alabama does their home state. Big difference.
I disagree with the notion that UGA can do better than Mark Richt. I attached a link where I got my info regarding UGA records.
I went from 1980, the year Georgia won the National Championship, to start my uneducated analysis. From 1980 - 2000, Georgia went 169-74-5 which is about a 68 winning percentage. Mark Richt was hired in 2001 (we all know about that now do we?) and has gone 106-38 which is roughly 74%. Richt has done extremely well during his tenure based on the comparison of these two winning percentages.
I don't believe he deserves to be let go but if UGA did pull the trigger and let go of Richt, who would they get to replace him? Any candidate for the position will contemplate taking a job where his school would be at best third in the conference with Arkansas and South Carolina also competing for that position. The ones who call the shots at Georgia realize that Mark Richt has brought them to their peak and taking a gamble on someone else is just too risky since the benefit would be minimal.
For Florida State, keeping Mark Richt does not affect how well Florida State does in recruiting and on the football field. I do think another coach at Georgia would benefit Florida State since I don't believe they could find another coach at the same caliber as Richt.
And to add another point, the picture of Richt in the link was taken last week.

I wouldn't call Richt mediocre.
I would. Now. When he first got to UGA, no. I disagree that a mediocre UGA is good for FSU. The SEC schools do much better in the state than we do. A strong UGA hurts one school hard and that is UF. Would love to see UGA and UT get back up there and keep UF down in their conference. I remember when the SEC East was night and day better than the west........the disparity now between west and east is even greater. Spurrier has a shot to rule his half of the conference. Still feels weird to root for shiny pants.
