Is there more to the story then that?

Probably. But Smith isn't talking and FSU is letting sleeping dogs lie. I know this from covering FSU/Fisher/Eliot, they don't depart from a target of need unless they have something else in mind.

Besides bringing in UL, are there other demands FSU has made (.i.e.-Division realignment) to the ACC in order to stay put?

  • Is Elliot Johnson a premier DC? If not, is their not any better DC's that's out there who maybe looking to make change in scenery?

  • Do you think with these guys leaving kills us with guys like mcquay, Thomas and Stacy coley?
Who would be the best guy for the dc job and would make the recruiting targets happy?

FSU isn't in a position of power to make demands until another conference bids for their services.

He is a pretty good DC and one I think that would again use the job as a stepping stone to get back to the head coaching level. As far as your second question, I'm not sure. I personally haven't heard any buzz of that nature, but maybe Josh or Chris have. I would think a lot of that stuff would be behind the scenes until a move was actually made.

From the people I talk to in coaching circles, most feel Ellis Johnson is a great hire. I'm hearing money could be a factor in FSU getting him or not.

McQuay will pay attention to the new hire. Dawsey is a direct connection there. As long as FSU makes a solid defensive back coach/defensive coordinator hire, FSU remains in that picture. I even suspect the McQuay's would go out of their way to get to know the new DC/DB coach.

Thomas is tied most heavily into Coley.

Coley is tied heavily into Gran.

FSU is going to replace the coaches. There will be a time of uncertainty that's for sure.

In the end I think Thomas will be impacted the greatest. McQuay and Coley will be impacted minimally.

So-you don't think that FSU already has an understanding with the Big 12 that they will leave the porch light on?

I doubt it. Don't think such an agreement is necessary.

  • what are the chances that Jimbo hires a NFL guy for DC?

I realize that his recruiting prowess probably wouldn't be great, but the results on the field may cancel this out.

  • Ok.

Would the soonest we hear from Coach Fisher him self on his canidates or ideas of canidates for any hires be Monday?

I really don't see it happening. I think recruiting plays into it.

More important matters...where do we stand on realignment with addition of Louisville. It's sad to see FSU have Barron when we need TK as school President and had TK when we needed Barron.

If FSU has any academic ambition, it will never have a need for a president like Wetherell.

    No. I don't.

I also don't believe FSU is in the driver's seat of what happens with the ACC. They can voice their opinion, but they aren't like Texas in the Big 12 where their opinion matters more than others in the room. They don't have that kind of power.

If anything, the ACC is showing in the Maryland situation that you are welcomed to leave but you better be prepared to step forward with 50 million dollars on your way out the door. The ACC will go out and replace you and cash your check.

He won't just come out and give anyone a list of his candidates.

  • Would Coley leaving cripple us at BTW? Seems like we're trying to really establish a foothold there especially with Miami getting buried.

Also, I know you're not an amateur psychologist, but Jimbo acknowledges Muschamp turning the defense over to Quinn. Is it possible he somehow didn't notice UF's stunning. almost overnight, improvement? Any chance he missed the possible correlation between Muschamp taking a role of oversight and said improvement? I'm just trying to get this to clear my own circuits so any help is appreciated. Because out of Muschamp and Jimbo it sounds like one of them gets it...

On the Coley question, it would hurt a great deal. Coley has built a great relationship with all of the kids as well as Coach Harris and numerous assistants. Lots of hard work would be erased with his departure. It is a school that is pro-Miami, but FSU has gotten themselves in the door because of Coley's efforts.

With his belief that you win at the defensive line, I don't think you see a switch to the 3-4 as the base system. Johnson's base system is 4-2-5 I believe, for example.
