  • It will not be Trickett next year, that's one thing I'm confident in. I think he has a rather low ceiling. I personally like Winston (he seems to have the personality of a leader, not to mention all the tools), but Coker is big, strong, can run and has a cannon of an arm. The competition between the two will only make them both better.

  • I agree. I think Jimbo should be willing to go 9-3 and then win the bowl game with either Winston or Coker and have a chance at the title in 2014. No matter who the starter is the goal is at or better than 9-3. Really good roster next year. Clemson and Florida are both flawed teams.

Hell, you never know. Our team going into next year looks better than ND's did going into this season. We just won't have the help of the refs (Purdue, Pitt, and Stanford games) but we could sneak our way into a huge game and a ranking that we might not be able to live up to.

  • Exactly, even if its Winston as long as it is a mentally strong, competent player we will win 9. We will force a good number more turnovers next year. More sacks

  • Either one would be fine with me, if I had to choose its Coker.

I want a game changer, not a game manager. So, no on Trickett.

  • I think it's Trickett. While I'd love to have a great athlete at the position, I think we need someone with an advanced understanding of the offense. While it may be unpopular, I think Trickett will have a better career at FSU than either Coker or Winston. I'm a big fan.

  • I like Trickett too, but I think in college football talent wins out. Also, watching Winston on the sidelines this year leaves me NO doubt that he is a genuine student of the game. I wouldn't be surprised if he knew the playbook inside and out already. He's an exceptionally smart kid.

Great conversation which is what we all want and look for. Up vote each other. It's therapeutic.

Agree...been a while since we've had a QB job up for grabs...lots at stake...plenty of opinions...lots of risk but great things are ahead, imho.

All games are important, if you don't think so try losing one and see how people act.-B.Bowden

  • Again, people, down votes are for terrible posts and posters not just because you disagree. This is a great discussion thread.

  • Neither Coker or Winston have done anything meaningful in games yet, so it ought to be a three-way battle with Trickett and let everyone be even.

I agree with the poster that said there's no real difference between RS Fr or RS Soph. Whoever is the guy, pick him and roll with him. Winston has the hype (and watching his competitive streak in that Elite 11 camp is something that has stuck with me) but Coker has everything you could possibly want in an elite QB.

I do think Jimbo should pick one of the younger guys over Trickett. Another thing is that I hope if it is Coker/Winston, that the offense takes advantage of either guy's legs more often.

  • I think there is a big difference in a 2nd and 3rd year Qb specifically. Not insurmountable but Coker is far more prepared than Winston

  • Winston = RG3 in an FSU uni cool

  • The winner, IMO, will be the one who has the best mental game. The one who can best read the defense and get you out of bad play calls and into better ones. The one who can go deeper into the progression reads and get the ball out quickly and on target. The one who has the best feel for the pocket ... avoiding sacks, when to run and when to stay put, and when to throw the ball away, etc.

I think that definitive statements that can't be substantiated are dangerous.

    Let's look at the facts:

Coker has been in the program longer, but he comes from an offense where he barely threw the ball and hasn't taken any meaningful snaps out side of practice.

Winston was the top rated qb last year and has all the physical tools to be great.when you look at his performances in the QB competitions before coming here.

Most of our opinions on each are coming from third-hand sources that we deem reliable, but the proof still remains and will not be validated (at least with me) until at least spring ball because the reliability and accuracy of those reports have been sketchy the last few years. (Remember the reports about Benjamin coming out of those camps. Remember the reports about EJ? Both appear to be exaggerations even though we saw the truth with our own eyes during spring ball last year)

Spring game last year, the best QB was Trickett. Kid has an accurate arm and moxie, he's just the size of my daughter.

Coker was decent as was EJ, but neither was that impressive. EJ was actually the worst.

I hope Winston comes out firing. FSU has had top rated QB's in the fold before and nothings come of it.

IMO, this is a test of our coaching staff as well as the talents of the QB's.

Saying all this to say, debating is fine, but no one knows anything until these young men hit the field. Each has the ability to win the job, and it 's going to be great watching them fight it out. I'm more excited about the FSU QB battle than I've ever been in over a decade.

Great post. As frustrated as we all were with EJs mental toughness imagine how Jimbo feels.

  • I agree. I wouldn't, however, compare the Jameis hype with the KB hype. Not to knock KB but Jameis's work ethic has never been questioned, nor has his focus, his leadership qualities, or his smarts. Not all of the Jameis hype is coming from third-hand sources. I think we've all seen him play a bit.
