President Barron issues statement

  • Florida State University regrets that misinformation about the provisions of the ACC contract has unnecessarily renewed the controversy and speculation about University's athletic conference alignment. Florida State respects the views of the Chair of its Board of Trustees that, of course, any university would examine options that would impact university academics, athletics or finances. At the same time, Florida State is not seeking an alternative to the ACC nor are we considering alternatives. Our current commitments remain strong.

White washing. This is going down. Didn't believe it until today.

If anything this just further clarifies that the President is just a PR face.

I sure hope so. I am probably moving to Texas, and I want the Big XII to happen.

  • This is going to get nasty. It appears that FSU has an internal power struggle that will play out very publicly.

In the end, The BOT and Boosters will win. I have always felt that Dr. Barron is using FSU as stepping stone to another University and Spetman won't be working at FSU in a year.

Really don't see how anyone reads it this way but maybe someone with knowledge will agree with you. It's like you're forgetting these guys who are talking heads always pump the company line until the ink is dry on something different.

  • Does President Barron not understand who really has the power? This is not a wise move by him at all and can cost him.

There is saying what you are supposed to say... "We support the ACC", "We will continue to help the ACC grow", ect...

Then there is publicly calling out your BOT chairman. That is a big no no, and could be bad for him and his future at FSU.

The president is the president, but if the BOT wants him out, he will be out. Bottom line. BOT runs the University.

  • Yes honestly he shouldn't make a statement at all. You do not go against the BOT.

  • In every school with a big time sports program there is a tension between the academic and athletic side of things.. in regards to professors and administration about priorities, etc. This unfortunately looks like a very public outburst of that tension.

  • So it appears that Barron and Spetman want us to remain in the crappy ACC, so that we can continue being hammered by Swofford and the ACC football officials, while Haggard, Smith, and Jimbo (by implication) want us to explore better options for FSU (especially financially) outside the ACC. Looks as it the powers that be at FSU are sharply divided. This is beginning to get very interesting.

Spetman just does what Barron tells him to do (Why TK hired him to start with).

Barron is COMPLETELY preoccupied with associating with the big time academics of the ACC, even at the cost of an athletic department running in the red every year.

True, but there should also be a relationship between a boss and employees and calling your boss a moron in public is probably not good for your long term employment. As much as I disagreed with some policies TK implemented while president, the BOT respected him and would not of gone behind his back.

Where do the Boosters stand in all this. I have heard where the President stands, where the BOT stands, so where do the Boosters stand? Have not seen a statement from them or rumors where they stand.

  • Classic good cop bad cop routine imo. Barron is the good cop Haggard is the bad cop. I think this is orchestrated and they are working together.

What I really believe going on is we are telling the SEC that we are Big 12 bound and we are giving them one last chance to invite us. If not, we will leave for the Big 12.

I would prefer the Big 12. The SEC will soon be 4th on the monetary totem pole behind the B1G/PAC12/Big12 which was unthinkable a couple of years ago when they signed their supposed blockbuster deal with ESPN.

I think what MAY have agitated Barron was Haggard saying no FSU graduate has ever put "From the same conference as Duke and UNC" on a job application.

Again though, I think Barron is just between a rock and a hard place. He makes a ton of money being a really important person and all of a sudden the guy above him comes out and basically says what FSU is going to do. You're left to just be fussy.

    fsufsu

  • Under our contract with the ACC we cannot publicly say we are leaving until we tell the ACC, this was damage control.

    gonoles1

  • Andy Haggard is head of a law firm and I just cant fathom he would be shooting off at the mouth to Warchant. Jimbo wouldnt be popping off at the mouth either..he is very careful with his words.

I hope this is all orchestrated.

Hopefully we are playing the game and using the media strategically.
