Position Switches

    Newberry is the better candidate

No he isn't. He lacks the size needed to play the position and DE is a much weaker position than DT.

He has actually played OT and has been good at it. This isnt NCAA 12. Skill is a legit aspect of football. Way moreso than 20 pounds

You do realize I wasn't talking about Newberry. I was talking in general. You think every player on this team is 6 months away from gaining 20% of their body weight. I love how you just magically know that Newberry can get to 290 pounds in 6 months.

Not to mention Josh has never said Mitchell was going to move to OT. Like musi said, it was a made up move to fix a barren offensive line. I don't know definitively if Mitchell is changing positions or not (I would say not), but please check yourself, because you definitely don't know either.

The moves that have been made aware to us on this website have been Stevens moving to LB, Hicks possibly to TE and Moody possibly to LB. Mitchell and/or Newberry were never mentioned.

You're wrong. Not much else to say. Oh and 20% of 260 is 42 pounds. I said 30 which is 11%. UNFATHOMABLE.

    Bushido said.....

"Mitchell to the OL. Josh, Corey, everyone knows it."

And Josh replied with "Nothing has been confirmed yet."

Which, you'd have to be numb to not know what that means.

Musi, I thought it was funny you were declaring we made something up and then I told you it wasnt and you mocked than and then you ask me for info. We're cool.

You don't know anything about Mitchell's ability to play the position and weight/strength is a big factor in success. I mean this respectfully: you are speaking from ignorance.

  • To couple with that Trickett always says he'd rather sign DL sometimes because he doesn't want them to have any habits. He loves blank slates and Derrick would be one.

  • Mitchell definitely isn't moving to offensive tackle with us landing two monster juco OT's and all the natural offensive linemen we got last year.

Unfortunately out of all the OL we landed last year only one seems to be an OT, Hart. Matias was slotted as the LT but is obviously playing G now. Pettis, Jackson, Barron, Carter (maybe but he ended up being a RS along with Pettis), Lovelady are all G or C. Imo we have 4 OTs on the team in Hart, Faircloth, Glauser, and Watson. That is 3 JRs and 1 So, it probably would help depth if we could add a RS Fr.
Props to fsufsu for finding the exact quotes. All that being said it is not definite, our coaches do not force position moves and obviously coming out of HS Mitchell preferred DL.

I thought that Matias was originally planned to play at tackle but with the line going nuts with injuries EVERYONE got moved around. I know a lot of people want to see Bobby Hart at guard which boggles my brain. The only thing that matters is getting the five best guys on the line to work together. That's it. End of story and nothing else matters. I don't think Mitchell is worth moving with the personnel we currently have and will soon get (Watson). Even if current guys move a little I don't think Mitchell moving will be a good thing.

  • Newberry day one at FSU was 268 .... Newberry and Mitchell will get a look at OT this Spring .... I see one of them making the move full time. Stample may get a look at OG but his got great upside at NT ( more so then Mitchell at DT and Newberry at DE ) . I think both Newberry and Mitchell have more upside at OT than they do at DE/DT. Yes , I have seen all three practice at FSU.

  • Realistically the only switches I can see more permanent and this is for one year because they are both seniors is Tosh and Moody to LB. We have a lot of O line, young , but there are quite a few, I just don't see Newberry or Mitchell to the O line unless they were already last year practicing there, they are good but do you think they leap frog all those O line and the few coming in? Could provide depth in an emergency. Karlos will remain at safety, he should/will get some plays like Reid did on O(to see how he does), full time move no. Rb depth isn't a problem yet(again emergency depth)... and receiver defiantly not.

  • I highly doubt a kid would be open to making a position switch in his junior year unless he's open to a redshirt to learn the position. Hicks looked good as a DE in his limited snaps at that position, Dent looked good with even less attempts at him. For Mitchell or Newberry to switch now would mean that last year was a completely wasted year for both of them.
LOS to RB/WR? That makes 100% NO SENSE at all!! Two positions we're NOT hurting at all are RB and WR where as safety we're paper thin.

I can't say one way or another whether these position switches are in the cards but I agree totally with the statement above... People seem to get bogged down in the numbers.. Size isnt everything, people seem to forget that around here. Newberry can play OT.. He proved that against the South Carolina freakmonster at the UA game.. If the coaches think its the best move I'll defer to them.

  • I do want to move the Florida sack leader his senior year to Oline in Mitchell. I would rather move Newberry but I think he might be a good DE too. Although Newberry did impress playing Oline in the UA AA game/practice/drills. That is impressive since he was going up against some of the best. I do not like Los to offense. That imo is a huge mistake unless it is a gimick every blue moon like when Reid did it. I am ok with all the other moves though.

Hicks played tight end in high school and got switched to DE once he got here. It's not that huge of a deal for him.
