Posey and Giants agree to one-year deal, avoid arbitration

  • Andrew Baggarly (@CSNBaggs) confirmed that Buster Posey gets $8 million dollar via a one-year deal with the San Francisco Giants to avoid arbitration.

The one-year deal with Posey was all about satisfying demands of the arbitration calendar. Multi-year talks will be explored in coming month or two.

Baggarly goes on to say it is a good sign that the Giants and Posey found consensus so quickly. It doesn't always mean common ground on multi-year talks, but it's a good start.

  • Posey may be a bit nice on that agreement....because he is worth WAY MORE than that....should be interesting to see what the multi year deal looks like.

  • Sure he is. And he will get more.
TWO WS rings in three years.
Led the entire MLB in hitting.
Leads and manages a very diverse and older pitching staff.

If he can stay healthy, he'll be a very wealthy man.

Of that 8 mill. don't forget about 42% goes right back out in fed taxes, not to mention California state sales and income taxes, etc. Every state he plays in, that has a state income tax will be hitting him for state income tax too! After all outflows, he probably will realize around half of that total in his pocket. Still. I could by lots of bacon cheeseburgies 'n Jamocha shakes for that kinda rhino. Buster will survive.

Unlike a lot of rooks, who blow it all and then some, neglecting to pay ANY taxes "Cough" Vince Young, the master of single digit wonderlick test scores - "Cough", Bustah will buy pork belly futures, and collect that cash every time one of us eats a rasher of bacon.

  • I don't know much about MLB.

Are the Giants unwilling to pay Buster what he is worth?

If so, isn't he beloved in SF? What is the deal, are they holding out?

MLB has a completely different compensation structure than, say, the NFL. Players start off working cheap (relatively speaking) and get more expensive starting around the third year when they become eligible for arbitration. The jackpot contracts don't come until free agency (6+ years in the league), or the latter arbitration phases (3-5 years) when the team is trying to lock up a player long-term to keep him off the market. Safe to say the Giants have every intention of doing the latter.

  • The Giants will take care of him when the time is right. They do well in resigning all of their good young players. They better not let Buster get away. That kind of production from a catcher is a huge advantage over almost every other team.

This. It's just how baseball works. In the arbitration years a player can only negotiate with his team, so Posey is actually making a lot for his age.
