Podcast: The Renegade Report–Spring Practice Defensive Strategy

  • In this episode of The Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai take an in depth look at how the 2013 defensive identity will begin to take shape starting on March 20th when spring practice begins.

Jeremy Pruitt comes from Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama to take over for Mark Stoops as defensive coordinator. How much of Saban’s defensive system will he bring with him? How much more pressure will FSU bring? How much 3-4 should we expect to see this season? What are the key factors that’ll make Pruitt’s defense different from Stoops’ defense?

We also discuss the latest news surrounding the program.

  • After listening to your podcast I went and researched a little. I specifically wanted to see why and how you pointed out that few teams have the personnel to do what saban does at bama, and then how they/we will do it.

I agree 100%. You have to be unusually deep with those kid of players to effectively use the zone pressure the way they do. I don't think Joyner is being moved to corner just so Karlos can get in the game. He's being moved there because he is going to be BADASS playing corner in this system, and Karlos is PERFECTLY made for, and correct me if I get this wrong, the money position. Our defense is going to be significantly more fun to watch.

This is the next phase of the ongoing chess match between offensive and defensive coordinators. Offenses started to develop and use hybrid athletes to create matchup problems. Percy Harvin and Aaron Hernandez immediately come to mind. It was tough to stop that offense because you never knew where they were going to line up. Percy could be in the slot, out wide or in the backfield. Hernandez lined up on the LOS, H-Back and split out.

At first, it was just having hybrid athletes on defense to defend the hybrid athletes on offense. Now it's evolved to using the hybrid athletes on defense to dictate / attack offenses.

Imagine this being our back 7: 1. Darby or Waisome 2. Joyner 3. PJ Williams 4. Karlos Williams 5. Christian Jones 6. Terrence Brooks 7. Tyler Hunter

We know Darby or Waisome would at 1 corner and we know Christian Jones would be the LB.

Who's the other corner? Who are the Star and Money players? Who are the safeties?

Better yet, how many different ways could you put the other 5 players into the other 5 positions and feel comfortable?

  • To say that I'm excited to have any and all combos of the players you have mentioned on the field is an understatement.

Please, chime in on the thread I stared and pretty much devoted to exactly this. Also, since I'm still trying to fully grasp some of the concepts myself, if you posted a thread describing the star and money positions I'm sure everybody would eat it up like myself. It's not just the LBs who flourish in such a system.

  • That was a great listen, really enjoyed that. Can't wait to see the new defense this upcoming season. I can't temper my expectations...
