Podcast: The Renegade Report-Spring Practice Offensive Strategy

  • In this episode of The Renegade Report, Herc & Nolebra Kai take an in depth look at how the 2013 offensive identity will begin to take shape starting on March 20th when spring practice begins.

With the departure of EJ Manuel, Lonnie Pryor and Chris Thompson what aspects of the offense will change? Will we see more singleback formations? More H-Back? Will the TE position become more involved in the passing game? What’s the best way to take advantage of the depth at wide receiver? Will the offensive line allow Jimbo to get more creative and open his playbook up more?

We also discuss the latest news surrounding the program.

  • Herc,
Thanks for the podcast--listen to every one.

One premise of this podcast was what you want to see out of the O that is new, wasn't part of the O last year, etc. I have no problem with talking about what you or I would want to see out of the O but based on the past two seasons I don't have a lot of confidence in any significant changes to the O. IMO in the past two seasons Jimbo's O has fallen short of expectations given the talent. In other words, Jimbo hasn't succeeded in getting the most out of his O players.

Do you really expect any of the changes on O that you discussed?

    Thanks for listening.

I do think we'll see some of the changes that I mentioned, primarily the use of the H-Back. With Lonnie Pryor gone, I think the fullback will be phased out of the offense except for short yardage situations. I could see Chad Abram being a good blocker but he's not nearly as versatile as Lonnie so his role will be limited.

To that point, I also expect to see a lot more singleback formations. Freeman and Wilder are both over 200lbs and the entire O-Line is over 300lbs.

In place of the Fullback, I think we'll see a 2nd TE some and another WR some. Remember last spring O'Leary said they were running 2 TE sets about 75% of the time. Once Dan Hicks got hurt, that had to be scrapped because Haplea and Kristo didn't know the playbook well enough. We already know the depth we have at WR so it's never a bad idea to put another one on the field instead of a TE.

Overall, I'm of the belief that we've yet to see what Jimbo wants his offense to be. He's had to scheme around things every year. I think this is the 1st time where he has all the pieces in place to really get creative and imaginative with the offense like he did his final few years at LSU.

It all depends on the O-Line though........
