Please not the Big 10

  • If not the SEC, then go to the Big 12. I just hate Big 10 football except maybe Michigan. Plus I live in Big 12 country. I go to two homes games every year but with a move to the Big 12 I could see a couple away games too.

    I'm just selfish I guess.

  • The more I think about it the more I think the Big 10 is better for FSU than the Big 12. Geographically we will be on the outskirts of either conference. Money wise the Big 10 has a better long term prospectus than the Big XII. Most importantly, in any given year we should be able to steamroll through that conference except for OSA and maybe one team.....and we wouldnt be playing them every year with a 16 team confeerence. The ACC is bad and we lose games in it, but the ACC isnt slow. I just cant see slow teams like Purdue being able to match up well against us and I think defending against Big 10 offenses is a lot easier than Big XII offenses. Academically I could care less about. A football conference should be about what gives the school the biggest advantage to succeed in football, nothing more. Money is just as good or better in the Big 10 and the path to a conference championship (and a playoff berth) is easier.

Two things though......cold games and boring football. Big XII football would be much more entertaining to watch.

  • Agreed I don't want any part of B1G

  • My wife and I are from south Florida. We lived in Dallas for a few years and now live in Columbus, Ohio. Honestly, B1G football is superior to the Big12 and ACC. I attended undergrad at Univ of Tenn too so I have a good perspective on all this.

The B1G has been down the past few years but their programs have much more tradition and long term success than the Big12, except for Texas and OU. I'm not sure the B1G would accept FSU because they're not an AAU school but if they did it would be a huge win for both, IMO. Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Penn St., and Michigan St. are a much better lineup than Texas, OU, Oklahoma St., Texas Tech, West Virginia, and TCU.

Plus, the financial payout is huge! They're estimating schools will bring in $50 mil annually in the B1G now that the NY and DC markets are in play for the Big Ten Network. That money would bring FSU ahead of Florida.

I feel the same way. We do not fit with the big 10 in any shape or form. Michigan is also the only program i like there.

We do not belong there at all. I would be completely devastated if we ended up there.

  • Call me selfish, but a move to the B1G means I'd get to see my Noles for the first time.

45 minutes from Ann Arbor, 1h20 from East Lansing, 3 from Columbus.

    Money's big, too.

Where does this come from though?

  • If the Big Ten took a 4-team "pod" from the southeast I think it's easily the best option for FSU. Best academics BY FAR and would give us some serious peers to aspire to be more like (think research and endowment). And very good athletics, too. Oh, yea, did I mention the conference REVENUE is the best in the country?

You guys are willing to go to Ames, Manhattan, Lawrence, Stillwater, Lubbock and Waco but not Lincoln, Iowa City, Madison, Bloomington, East Lansing and the like?

And talk about a great new region to spread the Florida State brand. We already have the southeast and mid-atlantic covered. We're talking 55 million new people (not including PA or MD which the ACC would/did have or NJ which is almost 9 million more residents that the ACC never had, nor is it including parts of St. Louis or NYC).

This is easy. Big Ten > Big 12 ALL DAY, EVERY DAY!

Texas' Rivals' site said we put out feelers to the Big Ten (tifwiw). Barron has mentioned academics as being important and that the Big 12 lacked them. The recent rumors of the Big Ten seriously considering/offering membership to Georgia Tech. Not that FSU had been mentioned as such in the rumors, but FSU would make a great partner with GT. (Only taking one would be a mistake but neither school may go if they were the only one invited anyways.)

You live near Toledo or something?

I would love the B1G as well but I think the chances of that happening are just about zero. If FSU was AAU, then yes, I think we'd be their top target. But since we're not I don't think we have a chance.

  • As a Ohio State fan. I totally under peoples feeling on expansion.
It has ripped apart regional cultures, rivalries, and most importantly, traditions
since the SWC was torn apart.
It is a weird when you hear that an FSU, OU, and Texas have back door talks to the BIG.
Texas in fact is a piece of the pie Delany has looked at.
My understanding is that Texas has some regrets about the 20 years deal with ESPN.
The LHN is not working as planned.
It was great growing up rooting for your team against the regional foes and then you would play
in a bowl with likes of FSU, OU, USC, A&M, etc.
But, who knows. Unfortunatly, MONEY talks.

  • From a competitive football standpoint, I get concerned with those cold weather games..

Being a Bucs fan, I know how those warmer climate teams perform when theyre away in colder climates and the result usually never ends well.

Nebraska isn't AAU. And Michigan and Wisconsin even voted to expel Nebraska from the AAU after inviting them to the Big Ten. We are ranked higher than Nebraska in the US News. We aren't a complete outlier in the Big Ten like Louisville is in the ACC. And if we were added with an AAU like GT and fairly well regarded university like Miami I'm not sure it'd matter much.

Would the Big Ten scoff at FSU and let the Big 12 block them out of the Florida market forever? Seems shortsighted on their part if they did. The benefits could be enormous.

Maybe there'd be some agreement to play more home games in late October/November and more conference road games in September/early October. They play a lot of nooners in Big Ten country and that mitigates some of the cold issues as well. That way they won't have to play in the 90+ heat and humidity and we won't have to play in the 40 and below cold and wind.

But the weather is the LAST thing that should be considered, seriously.

Yup. I think B1G, I think cold and slow. We are hot and fast. Just doesn't seem to fit. The only way I can see it working (from a football perspective) is if it becomes a mega conference with a substantial southern presence, as someone suggested in the B12 thread.

Trick, I hope you're right. I grew up in B1G country and would love to see us play those same teams I grew up watching. I just can't get away from some of the comments that Delany has made about wanting flagship universities and being so obsessed with academics.

I do think that if anyone could convince Delany into an invite, it would be President Barron. Barron has a brilliant mind and while people may not enjoy his short term moves, I believe that he has a great grasp on what FSU needs to do to have a successful long term future.

If the B1G is "slow" then the NFL must value slow prospects because the B1G regularly turns as many draftpicks as the SEC. Last year (a down year for the B1G) they had 41 drafted while the SEC had 42. The ACC had 31 drafted and Big12 had 26.

How many of those are on the lines? Wisconsin alone sends 3 ol a year to the nfl

  • B1G would be a home run for FSU. Huge money and as a bonus great academic institutions unlike the SEC/BIG12.

Again, it could be a perception thing. However, I do think that many of the B1G NFL successes are guys in the trenches.

  • I have a buddy here in Columbus who does pre/post game tv work for OSU games. He actually pulled me aside and told me that he thought this was going to happen. I laughed at the notion because it doesn't seem like a good fit to me but he honestly believes what he says. I asked him why he felt so strongly and he stated "thank about it....who do you think my sources are." Without saying it, he was clearly referring to football coaches. I'm still very hesitant to believe.

  • Windsor, Ontario, Canada, to be exact. About 45 minutes from Toledo.

I'd be in heaven watching us spank midwestern schools in person... Lol

Nebraska WAS AAU when they were admitted to the B1G. I think that was the key to their entry.

FSU does boast an excellent medical school, don't they?

Are we a long way off of AAU certification?
