Paterno's Statue to Stay

  • The trustees "are hoping they can have more time pass and people will forget about it and then it won't come down," one trustee said.

Joe Paterno's statue to remain at Penn State, sources say - ESPN

The embattled members of Penn State's Board of Trustees have quietly decided to leave Joe Paterno's statue standing -- at least for now and, some hope, forever, according to sources with firsthand knowledge of the trustees' private discussions this week.

  • May JoePa rot in hell. And I say this with all due respect.

  • Penn st is making it worse on themselves by refusing to gut and rebuild. It will take them longer to move on this way.

This will make the scandal linger much longer

  • These guys just don't get it. It is a football issue and a school issue. Joe knew in 98 when he was behind Bowden in wins covered up the biggest sports scandals of all time. During that time the football team got star recruits and joe got wins he wouldn't have gotten cause in 2001 he would have been fired. He did this to become the winningest. Coach of all time. Now penn state is being obstinate with the statue and paterno current contract post morturm. These guys really don't get it.

I disagree that the scandal was covered up to get the wins record. I think it was covered up to preserve the program and his grip on it.

They are one in the same. The program and it's stature equals win record. This was a cover up for penn state which included the win record which joe wouldn't have had if there wasnt the 2nd cover up.

  • Who cares about the statue, give them the death penalty for loss of institutional control and let the lawsuits fly with even larger awards because Penn St shows no remorse.

It's not a sports scandal, this has has nothing to do with athletics. I couldn't care less what they do with the statue

This is it exactly, they more or less shoved the issue on someone else. I seriously doubt they tried to cover it up, they just didn't bring the information forward. It's not just a coincidence Sandusky retired in 99

The use of the word "cover-up" is inaccurate.

  • This scandal isn't going to be over for a very long time. The trials for Curley and Shultz haven't even started. Spanier hasn't been charged. Most of the civil cases against PSU haven't even been filed yet. I almost think they are better to wait until all this is over and do one big "cleansing" at the end once all the skeletons are out of the closet and full impact of this is known. The statue is just one small thing to address. They should bulldoze that whole Lasch Building IMO. And what are they going to do about the Paterno Library? Who knows what has Spanier's name on it?

actually it's not, they choose to ignore it, covering it up is a whole other undertaking

  • It will be really interesting to see what the NCAA does here. I don't think you will have the Death Penalty but sanctions will happen IMO.

  • Horrible decision. At some point they have to start making the right decisions, right?

  • Cuz have you seen the stuff in the independent investigation? The information just released says that in 2001, the AD and other officials decided to to child services with the all they had. Paterno then talked them out of it. Paterno lied to the grand jury and he lied every time anyone asked him about it. This was a huge coverup orchestrated by Paterno.

Oh, give me a break with your holy roller crap. An accessory to crime is just as guilty as the criminal himself. What JoePa did is unforgivable. If there IS a hell, and I'm in charge, he's burning his ass off.

Joepa has not officially committed any crime, did he exercise his best moral judgement no. Its amazing what people will do or say by things released by a third party or the media, can no one form an opinion on there own? Joepa has or will pay for his sins, if that is the case. To sit here and judge a man without actually witnessing the crimes yourself makes you no better a person than which you continue to crucify, especially someone who has passed away. Have respect for all involved and quit bringing it up.

John 8 can kiss my stinkbutt. I'm a sinner of known repute, and I got a lotta stones for these clowns. Anybody who molests a child deserves the worst our society can dish out, and that goes for enablers too. JoePa has always been a curmudgeon of the first water, and arrogant beyond even Saban - I don't care how many charities he's supported. I also don't give two shits about his win total, it was tainted long before this to me. BB is the winningest Coach in the history of College Tackle Football PERIOD - END OF STORY. It's the continuance of hero worship for this ice hole in the face of his and his staff's egregious abomination that galls me.

Down vote me if you feel froggy, but nothing is gonna change my ire at this worst of all crimes against humanity.

  • This statue is going to be defiled on a regular basis. The protection of the statue alone. Can you imagine on gameday? How many cops is it going to take to keep it from being vandalized?
