Overall views of the Spring Game..

  • Ok, kicking back in my Hotel room with a glass of wine, after drinking a bottle at dinner....so quick thoughts....

to start with.....I saw a different game then some of you.....

Defense is going to again be nasty.

    DBs were laying the wood

DBs either had VERY good coverage or had a huge broken play

I believe the stats do not tell the whole story: O could NOT run the ball.....most of the yardage came from broken plays where the WR was way in the open or a TON of underneath drag routes.

EJ looked like EJ..... Not great, not bad...... way to many check downs to the underneath guys.....did throw 2 of the best balls....a beautiful long strike for a TD that was called back and an out to the far side of the field across the hash and over a DB....However, made some bad judgements......a few poor passes......EJ will be more effective when he can run the ball live....He should be our starting QB but I think he was outplayed today by both backups.

Trickett...I think he looked better than his stats show....and I am not including the first play of the game which was a long TD...that came off a scramble for dear life out of the pocked and 2 badly beaten DBs and a GREAT over the wrong shoulder catch by Dent...I think it was dent.... But he seemed to make good decisions and was always looking down the field more...threw to the seems....

DL NASTLY NASTY and NASTY in that order....going to again be very hard to run on....and QBs better make up their minds quick...

WR...for the most part had a very good game....very few drops....got some separation.....overall nice job...

Coker....looked very good out there....there is a reason the staff had been thrilled with him since he got on campus...but he is the third guy right now...

Wilder....I really saw this different than some of you...he looked just like last year to me....just never seemed to get that explosive step that would have gotten him more room...however, no RB other than a great Pryor run really had much time or space to operate in.....

    Punting....OH GOD.

    Hopkins....still has a cannon for a leg....but did miss a long one....

OL.....Hard to tell.....we are not very deep so splitting this unit up hurts more than any other on the team AND some are not as used to playing with each other.... I think we can be 7 deep but really cant afford injuries past the 6th guy.

O'leary had a really nice day...would be nice to watch him blocking which I didn't focus on.....

    Ill think of some more........

  • Keep in mind.. Coker and Trickett had the better OL.

Tank Carradine embarrassed Hart today.. he desperately needs a RS.

agreed, but he had the better WR and TEs and I dont think time to throw was his issue..... EJ is much better IMHO when he knows he can run freely....

  • Not that I disagree with anything you said about today's game, but I honestly didn't care how certain players looked. I was more curious as to who was playing and where they were playing and how they were used. I mean, we know E.J. is better than what he was today. I really don't understand why people watch the Spring Game and think they have a grasp of who got better this Spring and who didn't (not saying the OP did this, just people in general that are complaining about what they saw).

Overall, the things that I liked most in terms of what I was not expecting...

    - Brooks was better than I thought. Not just the pick-6 but just being in the right place.

    - NLS had a good game, again, not to judge the entire Spring in 1 game, but he looked good.

    - Punting...terrible

    - Greg Reid had KB on lock down all day. Was impressed with that.

So let me get this straight...

You say you don't understand how people look at the spring game, the only footage we've seen this year, and analyze how certain players looked. Then, you proceed to analyze Brooks , NLS, G5, etc. based on that spring game?

EJ did not look sharp with his throws regardless...is it early and not a big deal? Yeah its not a big deal. Is it wrong of anyone to state the obvious observation that stood out for most of the game? Nah.

  • This is why i hate spring games.

    elykkooh

  • I was fine with EJ checking down because he didn't do it enough last year. I loved the rollouts we used for all the QBs.

Predictably, WR and DL looked like the strongest units.

I wanted to see more rushing plays, personally. I couldn't make a determination if we really could run or not.

I wasn't analyzing anything. They were simple observations. Heck, I even stated that NLS looked good, but that didn't necessarily mean he was that good all Spring. Nothing I said today wasn't true, regarding Reid, the punting or Brooks. Not once did I say these guys were great or had great Springs. They were simple things that going into the game, I was not expecting. I am not going to sit here and analyze our team based on 1 practice. If I was at every practice, it'd would be different.

  • A 5th year senior QB should look like an all american in the spring game..........not like the 3rd stringer with a ton of potential.

  • I thought that the DL was the most impressive group from yesterday. Brandon, Tank, Dawkins, NLS, Amp, Demonte were all very ACTIVE.

Cam Erving did well. He looks good.

Benjamin and the WR's in general had way too many dropped "catchable" balls.

    Jeff Luc looked good!

Wilder showed me that he can be that guy to get that 3rd and 2.....north/south runner.

I liked what I saw from T. Hunter on defense. Kid can play.

Obviously, T. Brooks made a ridiculous interception that he took back to the house.

Bobby Hart struggled vs. Tank Carradine all day.

Overall, I like the collection of talent, playmakers at FSU. I feel this group is deep and should do some things.

  • Forgot to mention O'Leary. I think the kid is going to have a "GREAT" year.

    LHSPanther

  • And Telvin Smith looked VERY GOOD

  • What I noticed:
    G5 locking down KB.
EJ looking the same as he has for 3 years (I guess I'm on board with Bush's assessment that EJ hit a ceiling).
Wilder seems to get more yards than he should every time he touches the ball, but I'm not sure he's going to break any homeruns anytime soon.
Coker & Tricket both seem to have the playbook down, and the tools to be our starter next year.
KShaw & KB made some nice catches, they should be solid. KShaw takes some hits, that guy is a warrior.
Green, Dent & Haggins got a few grabs as well.
RSmith looked great. He made some tough catches and consistently got up ready to run the next play asap. He looked like he was taking the practice very seriously.

It's a spring game, so I don't put much stock in broken plays that turn into touchdowns. It seemed like walk-ons were in as much as starters - so the score is pretty irrelevant. However, I did like to see the long drives that ended in touchdowns. The offenses in this game looked better than what I saw on the field against UVA and UF last season.

    What I didn't see:
    - consistently good throws from any of the QBs - all catches are not equal. If you throw it behind a guy and he has to reach and is immediately down - it's a completion, but it's not nearly as valuable as a well placed ball that allows some yards after the catch. Since the QBs couldn't be hit, would they have been worse if they were actually under pressure, or would they have been better because they'd be less in their heads? - I have no idea.

    - consistency in the running game. Wilder looked good enough to get us 2-5 per play, but no one else stood out to me.

Based on what I saw (which is all the info I have) - I'll be happy with an 11 win season, but I expect a 10 win season.

  • hard to really tell anything from watching a spring game. maybe our front 7 is beyond spectacular that we had no run game going or maybe it's the same woes from last fall. If we don't rush for 150+ in each of our first two games, we've still got problems.

we have some serious skill at the receiver position but the qb's were struggling with their accuracy.

our goal has to be to first win the ACC Atlantic and not get lucky with stupid losses and able to squeeze into the ACC CG, then build on from that success and things fall into place.

call me skeptical after all these years of hype, i'm personally going to wait to see the on the field product before drinking the "this is finally our year" kool aid.

  • Dine looks great
    Olinemen look average
    Brooks is a beast
Los may need to rethink RB
    RBs are average
    QBs are good not great
    Telvin should play a lot

    WarDogCG58

  • I also saw some things that would never fly legally with ACC refs.
