Our Offense Moving Forward...

  • OK, with the speed of Bracy & Whitfield would a power offense be the best choice for FSU or a more spread zone scheme which would suit our OL... What's your take Nole Nation?

  • As long as its moving forward, I will be happy.

I like the idea of having a power running attack with speed guys on the outside. Force a team to put eight men in the box then play action against a single high safety. Or hit WR screens to Bracey?

PVBNole, I like your thinking however when you have 8 in the box, it is harder to run the ball. That being said, I would still try to run the ball even if I get a yard or so. I also feel that FSU is not a power team per Bama which I know Jimbo is trying to accomplish here. We have more speed, and I feel we can pass to open up the run. JMHO

  • I wouldn't build an offense around freshmen unless they are once- a-decade type players, like Herschel Walker good.

Yea, I like that too. Plus if you can make them only use one safety, not only does the WR getting 1v1 covered have tons of space to work with, but even I could recognize he is in 1v1 pre snap.

I just don't think Jimbo really like a power running game though? IMO he abandons the run faster than an ugly blind date.

I dont think there is any way to prove this (shocker). More baseless conjecture.

In fact, multiple sources have speculated that Jimbo's desire for a better ground game was a big part of why Coley never got handed play calling duties. Difference of opinion here.

I think I remember Jimbo making remarks after the spring game about the lack of running plays called.

Honestly. How many coaches are gonna ground and pound with our offensive line?

If they put eight in the box, you either throw intermediate stuff or WR screen them to death. If you put eight in the box with Marvin Bracey at the slot, I would WR screen / triple vert you to death. When Jimbo was the OC (prior to being the HC), we made our living on taking what the defense gave us. Numbers in the box, WR screen or Pass Play. Seven in the box, run the ball.

Can anyone in the country cover 10 yards as fast Marvin Bracey?

If Jimbo says we aren't calling enough running plays, I'm not why that's not his fault? I mean he called the plays, not Coley. IMO, Jimbo almost considers screens, WR screesn, and bubble screens and such "running" plays. Which a lot of people do. I just thought EJ ran the option VERY well but I thought that play disappeared this season.

I was wondering why we didn't run very many options all year because they seemed to have worked so well in the past. Then when they finally starting running them they were extremely effective. That had me scratching my head a little bit also.

  • In the past 5 or 6 yeas we have upgraded our offensive talent from about top 40 to top 10/12.......we will see the same offense schemewise with better talent. Bone...I think the reference to more running plays involved the spring game...Jimbo didn't call the plays.

  • I have no qualms about saying that IMO Jimbo abandons the run WAY too quickly in actual games. It's like if it isn't working in the 1st quarter, we go to the shotgun for the rest of the game.

Last year, EJ was much better throwing out of the Shotgun than he was out of the pro set. The issue was we were a much better running team out of the pro set.

What's interesting is that was a big complaint fans had with Bobby (particularly when we played UM), Brad Scott and Mark Richt (of course Bobby was still in the OC's ear during most games, particularly so if they were tight). When Jeff took over the complaint shifted from abandoning the run to abandoning the offense.
