Ok I am putting my self out there..ND to the ACC is just....

...If we go the nbc route, none of our games will be on espy...

Not necessarily, second tier rights are negotiated separately in most cases. Big12 has 1st tier with ABC/ESPN and 2nd tier with FOX. Additionally, FSU could negotiate 3rd tier rights away as well (see Longhorn Network).

Bottom Line, if NBC had first tier rights, people that wanted to watch the games would turn it on (right after Gameday of course). It doesn't really matter who is broadcasting b/w ABC/ESPN, CBS, NBC, or FOX. All major networks piped into everyone's homes and have same access to eyeballs. Furthermore, creating network competition is HUGE for payouts. Everything on ESPN allows them to keep the $$ low.

  • OK now I'm putting myself out there...if ACC is truly able to get ND into the fold, I just might have to name my next kid Swofford.

    PTCnole

  • As long as whatever network wins the contract actually shows teams other than ND and it's not NDBC... ;)

  • I could see Notre Dame eventually joining within the next few years much more than I can see ESPN giving up its owning of all ACC rights and allowing arguably its biggest competitor to snatch them up. Makes zero sense unless ESPN is going broke.

If they added ND and Rutgers I would be ecstatic. If they do though I hope they have the sense to break it up North and South. I would like to see it as follows...

North- ND Rutgers BC UMD UVA VT Syracuse Pitt

South- FSU UM Clemson GT NCST WF UNC Duke

Good lord that is one mighty-fine looking conference lineup.

More importanty, adding ND would shift the league office balance of power away from the research triangle.

FSU Football. Making cool the new swag since 2013.

lol, which they aren't. That's for sure.

Adn that said, I really want to stay on ESPN because they are the Mothership. BUT if NBC are really going to pour resources into their sports arm of coverage then I'd be fine with the ACC headed by FSU and ND being their bell cow.

If we're winning they'd pimp us and ND so hard we'd barely be able to believe it.

  • ACC North
    Boston College
    Maryland
    Notre Dame
    Pittsburgh
    Rutgers
    Syracuse
    Virginia
    Virginia Tech

    ACC South
    Clemson
    Duke
    Florida State
    Georgia Tech
    Miami
    North Carolina
    North Carolina State
    Wake Forest

We would play 9 conference games. That would leave 7 divisional games. The ACC could either choose to match each team up with 1 cross-division rival (like we have now), or each team would play 2 rotating teams from the other division. I personally favor 2 rotating opponents so we play more teams more often, but isn't UNC vs. UVA like the oldest rivalry in the South or most meetings between two schools or something? I'm afraid the ACC would want to protect some of their Tobacco Road rivalries and match up cross-division opponents.

Either way, this lineup would make me feel much better about the ACC, and would instantly improve the football image of this conference and increase the interest in football games. This would be huge for the ACC if it were to happen!

Hey I hope you are right! I can see nbc trying to keep us off any espn affiliate. Then espn gameday, sportscenter, signing day specials, espn recruiting rankings, the daily college football live could basicly ignore us and pump the conferences that aren't blocking them from showing our games. We saw this already when espn signed the new deal with the sec so they pumped the sec to increase their roi.

Espn is where people and recruits go for their sports. We need strong visibility there.

Get nd and shop it to the highest bidder who also gurantees visibility!

    Njnoles

  • Supposedly NBC is going to make a run at some of ESPN's best commentators, notably Scott Van Pelt, who is arguably ESPN's best and most popular broadcaster. SVP just so happens to be an ACC guy...

I'm good with Rutgers, but I think Penn State should be considered. I know they aren't a sexy choice right now, but the Sandusky shock will die off in a year or two and it is still a very popular university, with a national fan base. I think the whole media market thing gets blown out of proportion in conference expansion talks (see Big Least). In reality what matters is, "do people in those markets give a crap about x team?"

Do we really need Rutgers when we have Syracuse? Cuse has the #1 journalism program in the country and also a lot of fans in the NYC Metro area. So that means the ACC will get plenty of media coverage in NYC. What is as important in my mind is, are people in Dubuque, Iowa or Tucson, Arizona more interested in watching Rutgers-FSU or Penn State-FSU?

Keep an eye on the NBC sports channel, right now its mainly NHL and outdoor sports...BUT...they add on an entire conf like the ACC, they will put it on the forefront of all sports coverage.

  • Guys, this is old news. There is nothing new here that wasn't new 6 months ago...

    ACC wants ND...check
ND fits in well with the ACC...check
ND still wants to remain an Independent...check

There is no mystery that this would be great for the ACC in pretty much every facet. ND isn't going to sacrifice themselves for NBC.

Pretty sure UConn would be the 16th team and there would not be an Atlantic and a Coastal or North/South.

It would be 4 different 4-team pods that would be used to make a balanced schedule, with the 2 teams with the 2 best records going to the ACCCG.

    Pod 1
    Miami
    FSU
    GT
    Clemson

    Pod 2
    UNC
    NC State
    Duke
    Wake Forest

    Pod 3
    UVA
    VT
    Pitt
    UMD

    Pod 4
    UConn
    Cuse
    BC
    ND

You would play all 3 teams in your pod, plus 2 from each additional pod that would rotate every year, giving you 9 ACC games.

This still won't happen, because ND isn't going anywhere, but I do like the pod system.

I don't think anyone was trying to act as if they were breaking some super secret story but simply stating they thought it was a real possibility rather than just smoke. If nothing else it's good message board fodder for the slower offseason.

  • What's happening with the BCS? ND will pop when NBC and the BCS push them a little. This strategy has been a fun one to discuss since the ACC added Cuse and Pitt out of nowhere. Obvious there is a master plan. The ACC has been an innovator since they added FSU, UM, VT, and BC.

A great plan to add NBC, ND, and Penn St. Reuters and UConn are plan B types.

ESPN may be the big dog but NBC is free and has a much wider reach. If they wanted to go big they certainly can.

Penn St makes this deal work after ND.

  • For the folks that know about demographics and tv markets, I would be interested in seeing the pro's and cons of Rutgers vs. Uconn vs. Penn State.....assuming ND is team 15. ACC cannot compete with the SEC for football passion. Penn State would help most of the three, but what is the trade off for TV market?

Also, what about a BOLD move in trying to pry an SEC team to the ACC....Does trading Georgia for GT help? Perhaps not, but what team would you love to steal from the SEC?

    discuss.....

Tv markets? Penn State owns the Pennsylvania market (population: 13 million). After that Rutgers is the best option imo, at least better than UConn. They have 30,000 undergrads at their main campus, UConn only has 17,000. NJ has nearly 9 million residents while CT has less than 4 million. Rutgers is about an hour from Manhattan whereas UConn is about 3 hours. I know academics aren't a major focus but they do significantly more research than UConn, have a larger endowment and are an AAU member. Penn State outclasses both.

And the ACC isn't taking anybody from the SEC. Nobody. Will. Not. Happen. We won't invite and they won't accept.

You could make decent arguments for Louisville and West Virginia but I'd prefer neither. I'd take UL over WVU fwiw.

In a BCS with no AQs nobody would get a provision, so that wouldn't really change things.
