Ok I am putting my self out there..ND to the ACC is just....

  • ...a matter of time.

Supposedly from what I was told yesterday, there is some sort of loophole in the ACC television contract, when a new team enters the conference, the league can redo or even put the entire television contract out for bid.

Now...and this is where you need to have a bit of a leap of faith.....NBC is desperately trying to get back into being the Sports King, and with its wide array of networks (NBC, MSNBC, CNNBC, NBCsports channel) it is setting it self up, and what would be better than having Notre Dame football? Having all the sports in the ACC. They can go head to head with ABC/ESPN and Notre Dame is a MASSIVE draw anywhere they go.

While its obvious how badly the ACC wants ND, the reasons ND wants the ACC are just as obvious.

Non-revenue sports: Notre Dame has invested large amounts of money into all their non-revenue sports, and top to bottom, the ACC is the best conference int he country for non-revenue sports, and also make them a priority, something no other conference will do.

    Academics: No real explanation necessary

Rivlaries; Look at ND's football schedule...they played as many ACC teams as B10 teams. they would probably drop Michigan, or play them H&H every 5 yrs or so, but keep Purdue (instate rival) and USC, throw in the conf slate and thats not much different then any other upper tier ACC school.

Finally...75% of ND's television ratings came from the Northeast, and the dominate football conference in the NE is now.....the ACC.

Within 6-12mos of the new revamped BCS, expect an announcement of ND to the ACC, then a 16th school will be added and the ACC will be the first super conference, with potentially its own television network (NBC), that also provides a national affiliate.

  • I hope you are right! This single move could level the per team payouts between the ACC and pretty much every other major college football conference.

    SeinfeldNole

  • That would be beyond huge!

  • Pben, always love your posts.

Is this a conversation that is already happening between the parties or is this still just speculation?

I see what you out about the new BCS but what kind of timeline are you hearing.

  • That actually makes a lotof sense. Who would you want as the 16th team?

Personally? Rutgers fits the model the acc currently has. Good academics, commitment to non-revenue sports, and a footprint in a large television market, plus they are in the region, unlike the Big East which is taking teams to fill out the football side and hoping they hold onto their auto-bid, the ACC has an actual plan.

I do know on more than one occasion WVU and Louisville came begging with hat in hand to join the ACC, and were stopped at the door.

On the recent additions, I always knew Syracuse would be in the ACC, especially after they got screwed in 2003-04. Pitt was the on who surprised me, but then Pitt again, fits the ACC model. Committed to non-revenue sports, footprint in a big market, academic excellence.

For some of you political folks, if you can get passed your game being on MSNBC once or twice a yr, then you should be ok with it....lmao

Lot of truth to that statement...haha

The other thing...a lot of these schools are concerned about the ESPN monopoly on college sports.

  • I really hope you are right. Would be massive for the conference. Notre Dame is just like 45 minutes east of Chicago which is one of the 10 best cities in the entire world to visit to many and that's just overall awesome.

If we add ND and Rutgers that definitely draw the cries for a North and South division which would be awesome. Also I believe with the solidity of the ACC at that point that Rutgers could become a perennial top 50 football program. Doesn't sound great but you slot them in the middle of the ACC and it's great depth.

  • No interest in nbc. The world goes to espn for sports and they would act like we didn't even exist which would hurt the conference and fsu. Take nd but we need some connection with espn.

If we win 12 games this fall and ND joins ESPN won't "allow" us to break relations with them. They'll demand they stay in with the ACC.

Our basketball is about to go through the roof as well.

I disagree. The SEC has done just fine with CBS. People will tune in to where the games are being televised.

  • I hope your right. I would love to build a rivalry with them. It would also give UM another big rivalry to add interest to the conference. ND road trips would be a great time as well.

You don't get it. If we go the nbc route, none of our games will be on espn. Nbc is trying to build a competitive network. The sec is tied to cbs and espn. We would be strictly tied with nbc.

    Njnoles

  • rutgers and ND would be a homerun of epic proportions for the ACC but color be skeptical. A trip to south bend would be one I would certainly go to though

I get it, I just don't agree with you. If the ACC was comprised of the teams mentioned by Pben, and NBC had an exclusive contract with the ACC, the people would tune in to watch the games. I, for one, would love to see ESPN's stranglehold broken.

I agree. Trips to NYC and South Bend/Chicago would be big draws.

  • If they added ND and Rutgers I would be ecstatic. If they do though I hope they have the sense to break it up North and South. I would like to see it as follows...

    North-
    ND
    Rutgers
    BC
    UMD
    UVA
    VT
    Syracuse
    Pitt

    South-
    FSU
    UM
    Clemson
    GT
    NCST
    WF
    UNC
    Duke

You know, and this is just my own thought, why not have 4 divisions...a conf semi-final, than a ccg?

    Yeah I am being greedy.

BTW I got all this from someone within the ND athletic dept (and no it was not Leo the custodian) and its not like its some top secret plan.

Keep in mind, non-conference games would still belong to the home team, so if we were to play say Ohio State in a home n home (just an example, dont everyone freak out), then when we played there, it would be on abc/espn.

This has a long way to go yet...but....the water is simmering.
