  • To those that are well traveled. Where have you eaten the best steak.

  • I've eaten lots of good steak. Two of my favorite restaurants are Grill 23 in Boston and Harbor 60 in Toronto. My favorite steak chain is Ruth's Chris and my vote for best overall eating experience is Fogo de Chao

    1. Hands down gotta be Peter Luger Steakhouse in the BK.

    2. Burns in second although I know I will get tons of responses on how over rated it is.

Probably Peter Lugers or Smith and Wollensky.

Aside from those, home is the best place for steak. Buy prime, grass fed, and cook it on the grill.

  • Marks Prime, right here in Ocala. There's one in Gainesville but nobody want to go there.

  • You guys need to be thinking about cooking at home and getting grass finished beef. Never fed gmo corn.

I think that a good number of you live in areas where it's easy to do that.

At Whole Foods you can find out where the beef comes from and if it is grass finished. That steak on your grill will be the best steak you've had, taste wise and health wise.

  • Morton's, Capital Grille, Ruth's Chris and the other high-end chains are all going to give you great steaks, but I've found that the truly exceptional ones are non-chain local steakhouses...

  • Capital Grill or Morton's. And I'm of the opposite opinion about grass fed cows as some in this thread.

  • I'm a NYC snob in the biggest way, but Chi definitely gets the nod here. David Burke has a great vibe, and the 75 day dry aged is amazing. Joe's in Chi is pretty great as well. If not Chi, El Gaucho in Aruba has a pretty amazing Argentian steak.

If you want to cook at home you need a sous-vide and a torch.. Assuming you want the best.

True, but all of Chi's meat is corn fed in lots. The corn that they're fed is gmo, roundup proof corn. The best beef in America today is probably Uruguayan, because even the Argentines are doing the gmo corn food lot stuff right now.

You can order Estancia Uruguayan meat online. Expensive, yes, but at least I know I'm not eating antibiotics, hormones and roundup.

Steroid hormones and antibiotics are reasonable concerns. Growth hormone does not matter.

GMO and the cow's food means jack to humans as long as it doesn't cause an infection that becomes encysted in the meat.

The body can break down any protein into individual di and tri pepdide before it is absorbed. It's one of the reasons mad cow is unproven bullcrap (no pun intended).

I agree with 90% of what you have said.

But, the benefit of eating free range, grass fed is the higher Omega 3's and lower Omega 6's.

I actually changed my diet drastically in March 2011, no fast food and only pastured meats. Cholesterol - LDL's dropped and HDL's went up. The only change was pastured meats and no fast food. And, we're talking about a significant change. Exercise, tennis, yoga, and weight training remained exactly the same.

I've hit a bunch of NYC steakhouses lately, like Delmonico's and Bobby Vann's but they aren't as good as the two I mentioned. Peter Luger's is next on my list, and I have very, very high expectations. I will be sure to report back once I get to eat there.

I will also say that I am shocked by the number of people who have said Morton's in this thread. I've probably eaten at 10 different locations, and while it's never been anything close to "bad", I've never had a particularly memorable experience there either. Factor in the cost, which is 20-30% more than Ruth's Chris, and I'm not sure why that would be at the top of anyone's list. But maybe that's just me.

  • I can cook a solid steak on my grill, but can't come close to what good chefs can do with a filet. A filet with the right sauce just melts in your mouth.

Morton's and Ruth's Chris are usually good, but I prefer non-chains. Standouts I've had are Fleur De Lys (Hubert Keller), Chateaubriand and Beef Wellington by the wife, and an organic filet at some random place in Costa Rica. I've also had Kobe Beef Carpaccio before and would have murdered someone for more. Can't even imagine how good a full Kobe steak is. Anyone had one?

In Jax we just had our Morton's close and I think they've closed a few other locations. There are probably 5+ places within a 5 mile radius of that location where you can get a better steak for cheaper with a better atmosphere. Doubt it will be missed.

Definitely plan to hit Peter Luger's this summer. I'll probably be staying in Williamsburg, so it would be stupid not to.

Why didn't you say you wanted sauce?biggrin

Then, I'd have to go with one of most incredible meals I ever had in Beaune, France.

Appetizer was sauteed foie gras, main dish was an incredible steak with bernaise or pepper. I don't remember which. I just remember that that was one of the best meals I have ever eaten.

Another foodie friend of mine that's a wine merchant, has had the same experience in Beaune.

Do you eat eggland's best? i've been using those eggs for awhile for their higher content of omega 3 and lower cholesterol
