I know many of you are up in arms w/ the OL situation. I'm not really pleased w/ where things currently stand, either. FSU has had issues w/ OL depth for quite some time. Should Trickett shoulder some of the blame? Absolutely. However, let's step back & try to objectively look at things, especially as it relates to this yr & FSU's OL recruiting.
There's no way anyone could've predicted Richy Klepal's injuries & subsequent retirement from the game. I'm also pretty sure no one could've predicted Menelik Watson leaving for the NFL after only 1 yr at FSU. Daniel Glauser was also here only 1 yr, but the staff has known about that for a full yr, so it's not as relevant to the argument. Finally, we come to Austin Golson. He had been "committed" to FSU for almost TWO years. I'm guessing everyone thought he was a lock for this class. Things would look much different if Watson, Klepal, & Golson were in Tally next yr. If FSU is still able to reel in 2 of 3 from Golson, Kirkland, & Bell, this will be a nice OL haul.
Do I think Trickett is a good recruiter. Not really. Is OL recruiting all on Trickett? No. Is he a good coach? From all accounts, I'd say yes, although I think he had more success at WVU because he was able to stick w/ one scheme, & he recruited his type of players. It seems as if Jimbo wants road-graders at OL, instead of smaller, more athletic types. Personally, I agree w/ going for the bigger lineman, as they're more likely to wear opponents down & build a dominant ground game, ala the SEC. Maybe when Clint's time at FSU is done, papa can leave w/ him.
Obviously, I'm not a Trickett lover, but I don't feel as if all the OL issues are his fault. Feel free to rip me if you want, but I think it's good to step back & take a reasonable approach to it all. Would love to hear your thoughts, whether you're in agreement or disagreement.
Honestly, I think we finally kill it next year. And no that doesnt mean a bunch of stars necessarily but I think we get Damian Prince as the star recruit and then 4-5 guys who are low four, high three star types with a lot of offers.
It's arrogant and foolish but high school OL look for a school that they will play at their second year. Third year is seen as too far off. We will start 5 seniors in 2014 on the OL. So 2014 OL will be digging FSU>
The Golson thing screwed us just as much, if not even more than Klepal. With Klepal, at least we had a heads up and knew that we needed to find a replacement. With Golson, it came out of nowhere 2 weeks before NSD after he was committed to us for just udner 2 entire years. Going into the season we had 4 OL commits and needed 1 more. From there we lost 2 commits and so far only have a "big TE" to replace them. Still, we will see what happens on NSD. If we land Bell and DK, we will be okay, but I am not expecting Kirkland.
