No Surprise: FSU Sand Volleyball Selected For Nationals

  • April 16, 2012

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State sand volleyball team was selected as one of four teams for the first-ever Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship late Sunday night by the AVCA National Championships Committee.

The Seminoles will be joined by Pepperdine, Long Beach State University and the College of Charleston at the event, which will be held in Gulf Shores, Ala., from April 27-29.

The competition will also feature a 16-team Pairs Championship, where the FSU tandem of junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs captured the No. 1 seed, while the Nole duo of senior Jekaterina Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon earned the No. 5 seed.

Newgard and Tiegs have won three tournaments this season, including this past weekend's Fiesta at Siesta Key.

CBS Sports Network will televise portions of the competition in two hour-long specials. Part 1 of their coverage will air beginning on June 6 at 9 pm EST and Part 2 will begin airing on Wednesday, June 13, also at 9 PM EST. A group of community partners including the Gulf Coast Region of USA Volleyball, the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau, and several local businesses combined to win the bid to host the first Collegiate Sand National Championships.

The Team Championship will be held on April 28. Each of the four schools will field five doubles teams ranked in order. The schools will compete in dual matches in which the winner is the team capturing three of the five flights. Play will start at 11 a.m. CT on five championship courts that have been constructed specifically for this event. Teams will battle in a double elimination format with duals scheduled on the hour, and the final matchup scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. CT.

The Pairs Championship will consist of sixteen doubles teams engaged in pool play on April 27 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT. The results of that play will determine the seeding of the 16 pairs into a single elimination tournament on April 29. First round matches will start at 8 a.m., with quarter finals scheduled for 9 a.m. Both semi-finals and the championship match will be held on center court, beginning at 11 a.m., and will be covered in depth by CBS Sports Network.

The Seminoles wrap up the regular season this Saturday at Noon with matches against UAB and FAU at the Seminole Sand Volleyball Complex.

  • Is this an NCAA championship? Does it count towards the directors cup?

No its too small. NCAA only sanctions sports with more than 40 teams.

  • I wish this would go towards our directors cup standings because it would give us a lot of points.

  • 'Newgard and Tiegs' would be a great cop TV show title.

  • Pretty cool. The wife works with Tiegs father and he is always surprised that she knows how the team is doing with my updates to her, haha. Best of luck ladies

  • It will be NCAA soon though. UF has plans for a program soon, and I'm sure a lot of the other schools in california and florida will begin to follow suit. FSU has luckily established themselves for recruiting when it does become a sport under NCAA.

I haven't seen anything pertaining to UF having immediate plans to add the sport. I believe they considered it and added women's lacrosse instead. That's not to say they won't still add it in the future. If you've seen something otherwise could you link it? I'd be interested in reading it.

Georgia State and FIU have both officially agreed to add the sport for 2012. I think Louisiana-Monroe might be adding it as well. I'm sure a few more may add it but they may add it late like Loyola Marymount did this past year. They didn't announce they were going to play sand volleyball until February.

  • I wonder if the other teams will eventually catch up to our team, because it looks like we might win the championship this year running away.

We're not the top seed in the tournament so I doubt we run away with it. Realistically it would seem only us and Pepperdine have a shot at actually winning it though.

Some of the smaller programs will probably catch up some as they incorporate more sand-specific players into their rosters but I can't imagine a school that's not a good indoor school being a good sand school. For the next few years there's only going to be so many schools all these recruits can actually sign with if they want to play sand.

I thought we beat Pepperdine, so how are we not the top seed.

  • Duval, Pepperdine won the USC tournament that FSU finished 2nd. Don't think the teams faced each other outside of that. Doesn't look like they lost all year in dual matches either. shrug

At least they have to travel across the country rather than the Lady Noles. Championships are in Gulf Shores, AL

And then Tiegs and Newgard took the singles competition the next day (beating Pepperdine's top pair in the finals).

I'm not sure why they seeded the 4 teams in the team championship. It looks like all 4 schools will get to square off in a dual match against each of the other schools. The top two schools after this round-robin will then face off in the finals.

There's also a pairs championship and involving 16 pairs from 10 schools (6 schools have 2 pairs, 4 schools have 1 pair). We have the #1 and #5 seeds (per the OP's link). They're split into 4 pools of 4 and each pool will be round-robin. Pairs from one pool won't face pairs from another pool. Based on the previous seeding, the pool and results from this round-robin they will re-seed and start a single-elimination tournament on day 3.

I linked the release from the AVCA website where I got most of that information.

A third-seed, an early deficit, a two-time world champion and terrible weather conditions didn't faze Florida State junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs on Sunday on the final day of USC's four-team tournament.
