Trickett isn't my favorite, but I believe MW makes a good point: these kids need to become mature & realize RT is just trying to help them prepare for the next level. He has a pretty good track record in that regard.

I do realize different players respond differently to certain coaching styles, & the best coaches know how to deal w/ different personalities differently.

  • No, Trickett needs to stop being such a hardass because it doesn't appeal to most kids

    I don't expect a 18 y/o kid to act like a man in his mid 30's

  • I guess it is a shame that the meanest position in football gets all upset if you get yelled at. Trick does not abuse players. They do get taught something and he will get in their face if they go against what he has taught them. They way trick spoke and treated players like Hudson, Datko, etc shows me he does have compassion for those that listen. Being stubborn and a 18 y/o saying my way will not fly with him and it shouldn't with olinemen.

Some people are motivated by screaming and shouting.
Some people are motivated by compassion and calmness.
Some people are motivated by a mixture, depending on the day.
Some people are motivated by vanity.
    Etc.etc.etc.

The coaches who understand this and apply the right touch, have a much larger degree of success than Trickett ever will.

  • Some act like Coach Trickett just constantly berates people and that is it. I would be willing to bet he is a very rewarding personanlity when you do what you are told, be where you are supposed to be and so on.

    In your opinion, correct?

  • You wouldn't make it as an olineman at FSU with that attitude. You have to be BIG, mean and nasty as a lineman, so if you can't handle getting yelled at, then you might have to reconsider the sport you play. DEAL WITH IT!

I was commenting on the previous poster saying trick should treat the players with kid gloves and not like men. Ever wonder why you don't hear about one of tricks guys failing behind academically or in trouble with the law?

    dsb05c

  • Most offensive line coaches are just as bad as Trickett. If you think he is the only coach who yells at players well I guess those people have not been to practices before.

    ESS2011

  • A linemen has to have a nasty attitude to be in those trenches. You cannot be soft if you play in the trenches.

  • its not him yelling, its his personality. IMO hes a decent OL coach, but his personality doesn't mesh with elite kids today and that hurts our recruiting efforts.

Jimbo constantly yells at players more than anyone, but he still recruits at an elite level.

i personally hope this is Ricks last year at FSU

  • Trickett has no interest in adjusting how he is. Kids are either going to buy in or not come here/leave early on. It hurts his recruiting though. He has a certain stigma to himself - good coach but difficult person.

    +1

Trickett took a guy that had played 8 games and made him a 1st rounder in less than 6 months.

  • What high school kids should take from this article is that if you have the athletic ability to get to the NFL, Trickett WILL get you there. You just have to shut up and do EXACTLY what he says.

There are plenty of OL coaches that can do the same without running their unit like Trickett does

Athletic lineman will always fine their way to the NFL

  • The offensive line is the hardest position to project from High School to College. The elite 5 star lineman coming out of high school are rarely the linemen getting drafted in the 1st round of the NFL Draft.

I took a few minutes to look at rankings for lineman drafted early in the last 5 years. These are either the 1st round draft picks or the top 5 linemen drafted for that particular draft followed by their star ranking

    2012
    Matt Kalil – 5 | David DeCastro – 3 | Riley Reiff – 3 | Glenn Cordy – 4 | Jonathan Martin - 3

    2011
    Tyron Smith – 5 Stars | Nate Solder – 3 | Anthony Castonzo – 2 | Gabe Carimi – 3 | Derek Sherrod – 4 |Mike Pouncey – 4

    2010
    Trent Williams – 3 | Russell Okung – 3 | Anthony Davis – 4 | Mike Iupati - 2 | Maurkice Pouncey – 4 | Bryan Bulaga – 4

    2009
    Jason Smith – 2 | Andre Smith – 5 | Eugene Monroe – 5 | Alex Mack – 2 | Michael Oher – 4 | Eric Wood – 2

    2008
    Jake Long – 4 | Ryan Clady – 2 | Chris Williams – 2 | Branden Albert – 2 | Gosder Cherilus – 3 | Jeff Otah – 4 | Sam Baker – 4 | Duane Brown - 3

Trickett hasn't had any 5 star linemen since he's been at FSU and very few 5 star linemen have been drafted in the 1st round in the last 5 years, so I guess it's more than just a Trickett problem. The coaches who've gotten the 5 star talent out of high school haven't had much success turning it into highly drafted NFL prospects.

So over the last 5 years, the average star rating of first round OL picks is a little under 3.3.Seems doable to me,thanks Herc!

That is why we should focus on the JUCOs we are in excellent position to land BOTH. If we can I don't care if we land Prince. The kid wants to start a a true freshman, no thanks. You can get reps but he shouldn't start if he comes here.

JUCOs project much better and are matured in mind and body compared to high school coaches.

Landing Eluemunor and Mavety would be stellar. Then clean up with Sharpe and another OT.
