Memo to anyone crying about Clowney not being able to go PRO

  • The NFL and NBA use the NCAA as their minor leagues. Thats why they have the rules they have and i look for the NBA rule to change to 2 years soon. The longer the kid stays in college, the less likely they (professional teams) are to make mistakes. The current union members agree because it keeps more veteran players in the game.

    What is preventing the NFL from creating its own minor league system?

    I mean, technically, they could just buy arena football and make it into a minor league system for anyone who can't make it on an NFL squad... they can draft 4/5 star kids directly out of high school....

    If they wanted to, they could easily undermine college football and gut their revenues.... and people would likely consume it... Ask yourself, why isn't the NFL moving in this direction, if your theory is sound?

    Hint: Your theory is a smaller part of the equation than you realize.

    Because at least on the college level you have way more minions helping foot the bill than you would if you started a minor league like arena football.. Majority of things get done on campuses as a result of many many willing boosters as opposed to foot a majority of the bill yourself or fighting with taxpayers... College Football to me is the most fool proof business model established. Even the NCAA can't screw it up

    Exploit is a strong word. Colleges spend $1,000s to get these guys on campus and $10s of thousands for academics, rent, food etc. They have a good deal.

    I wish I was exploited. Free education versus school loans I'm still paying. Plus playing a game and trim as far as the eye can see. Not a bad deal at all.

    You're correct. They perform a service that earns them roughly $15,000 a year (up to $30,000 a year for OOS guys) in education, food and rent.

    It's comparable to a regular college student with a part-time job who pays their own way (minus the shit ton of loan money you'll owe after graduation). Their money is going to education, food and rent/bills.

    Agree with everything but the free education part!! They work in exchange for their scholarships.. 80,000 people don't fill a dorm room to watch these kids play NCAA 2014 they put their professional careers and health at risk for our viewing pleasure. The likelyhood of you breaking you're back carrying accounting books to class and not being able to get a job on Wall Street is slim to none..

    This isn't a logical argument IMHO...

    Are you trying to say the NFL couldn't just form a 32-team replica minor league:
    1) that took place during the regular NFL off-season
    2) that stole all the 5/4 star recruits from colleges (since they get paid)... in turn, severely damaging college revenues, due to their sport being considered amatuer....with little hope to going to pros
    3) that would create enough revenues to offset expenses?

    I'd bet you dollar to doughnuts they'd make a shit ton of money from their TV contracts.

    I'm sorry bud, the reason the NFL doesn't move forward has much more to do with the benefit it gains from having fans fall in love with players...and following them up.... than it has with player safety or because the NCAA has a strong hold..

    The NFL could easily break the NCAA... the NBA has already proven it with college basketball

    The whole point is why assume the risk any earlier than you have too. Colleges assume the insurance for injuries and foot the bill for early development.. You would be taking on more fiscal responsibility in a model that's not broken.. If I was an owner I wouldn't want any part of that.. Just the extra debt of insurance alone would be alot. We agree on the main point of the benefits though

    That's bs. If a guy wants to play pro football he has to go to college. So yes, they are forcing them. With basketball my opinion is different b/c they have many other options to get paid and play. They can go to Europe or play in the d league. Football there's none.

    Yes but that guy isnt good enough. Hes the guy that goes to bama and is a backup. Not the stud 1st rounder who espn or CBS use to promote the game week in week out. Also, it's not the athletes fault they get paid so much. That's on the fans and the owners.

    In my opinion, it's a move that would completely blow up college football. College basketball is a hell of a lot less enjoyable for me, than it was growing up in the 80s-90s, because of the NBA plucking kids early.

    If I owned a company like 247sports.com, I'd be entering this debate out of self preservation... Interest in college football would go down the toilet if this happened... How fun would signing day be for Nole fans when the only recruits you have left to pick from are 3-star amatuers, who have an astronomically low chance of developing into a star in the future and making it into the NFL.

    Just b/c it would hurt the sport doesn't make it wrong. It makes it bad for you perhaps but it's not your career that's threatened by playing for a pittance of what your skill is worth (for some players albeit a very small percentage of NCAA football players).

    Exactly. If the risk of injury weren't so real and the length of career so short b/c of physical realities it'd be a different story. But it is and bc of that the elite players are getting a very bad deal.

    Dennis I agree with you.. It just erks me when people try to say these guys aren't assuming any risk, or is getting a free ride.. It just sounds like all people see is the money they could possibly make of an average of 3 years of their life.. Bitterness I guess.

    They should get payed to play, everyone is getting payed except the people who everyone is coming to watch play the game. These kids have to go to college to make it to the NFL, they are being used.
